You are given RM 20000 to start a business you would enjoy managing. What type of business
would you open?

Candidate A : A very good morning to examiners and fellow candidates, please allow
me to kickstart the topic. I would like to set up a stationery shop if I was given RM20000. It is
an enjoyable business venture for me to open a stationery shop as stationery is an essential
tool to assist humans in their day to day work and will help to improve the efficiency of work.
Besides, I have an opportunity to meet various types of people from all walks of life. The
customers who visit the stationery shop are from different backgrounds to satisfy their different
needs. For example, I will promote Technical Mechanical Pencil, Architect’s Scale and Metal
Ruler and measuring tape to architects as those stationeries are essential that every
architecture office must have. I enjoy engaging with the customers and treat all of them as
special guests by providing the best services for them. Hence, I would like to open and
manage a stationery shop. How about others?

Candidate B : As for me, I would like to open a pet shop. Since I was young, I have
loved pets and I dreamt of becoming a veterinarian. I had reared several pets from cute to
exotic. For example, puppies and spiders. I would enjoy opening a pet shop as it will help to
explore more on animals. For example, the different breeds of animals and their personalities.
Understanding more about animals will help me to identify the needs and suitability of
customers when they are deciding to rear a pet. For instance, Husky dogs are not suitable for
children and elderly in the house as they are more playful and aggressive. Apart from that, I
would enjoy opening a pet shop because I can do charity work while earning an income. This
is because all the stray dogs in the town can be brought to my shop and I would help to take
care of it until someone volunteers to adopt it. As we know, most of the people are scared of
stray dogs and have a phobia with it. Therefore, opening a pet shop would help to overcome
this problem and in the meantime I am enjoying the things that I like to do that are loving and
treasuring animals. Hence, I think that I would enjoy managing a pet shop because I am able
to explore more on animals and do some charity work while earning an income. What do you

Candidate C : I beg to differ, candidate A and candidate B. I will open a shop selling mobile
phones. I have been so interested in digital gadgets since I first came into contact with mobile phones. I
manage to handle with some phone’s small problems that faced by me and my parents. It is one of my
hobbies to do more research about new technology stuff. I am glad that I can change a hobby to my
career. Opening a shop selling mobile phones， I can spend time wisely knowing more new brands and
models of mobile phones so I can have more varieties of choices when I want to purchase a new mobile
phone that suits me. In this internet savvy world, mobile phones are a necessity to people from all walks
of life. Everyone needs a mobile phone to help them settle their daily life matters. So, I think the mobile
phone shop is financially rewarding because of its low cost and high profit business, I believe that I can
earn back the cost in a moment. Hence, I would like to open a mobile phone shop. How about the
others?

Candidate D : I enjoy opening a cake shop the most. This is due to the fact that I can
explore various types of cake recipes such as butter cake, sponge cake and chiffon cake. I will
offer a wide range of options for my customers to choose their favourite flavour for the cakes
which includes chocolate, matcha, oreo and so forth. Furthermore, my cake shop welcomes
people from all walks of life regardless of race and even vegetarians. My shop will specialize in
making halal, low-fat and less sugar cakes. Nevertheless, I can do custom cakes for any
occasion according to the design requested from the customers. For instance, there are
wedding cakes, birthday cakes and baby full moon cakes. I will also launch a few special
cakes during the festivals like Christmas and Valentine's day to share the happiness with my
customers. Undeniably, cakes make a better way for celebration.

Candidate A : I would like to stand firm on my idea that opening a stationery shop is
enjoyable and profitable. This is due to the fact that as a boss I am able to manage my own
shop at any time I like. Flexibility in working hours allows me to have work life balance. To add
on, it is also easier to manage a stationery shop rather than others as stationery can be stored
for a long period and not easily destroyed. It is more secure for me as a new businessman in
managing stationery shops as the risk bear is lesser.
Candidate C : I would like to reinforce my stand to open a mobile phone shop. By
selling mobile phones, I will better understand the pros and cons of each phone through the
reviews of my customers and with my experience, I can recommend better phones to other
customers. Moreover, I myself have some experience in repairing mobile phones, I think it
must be fun to provide after sales service to all my customers who need it. As an owner of a
shop, I can arrange my own business hours. I can spend more time on my hobbies such as
travelling and playing badminton. This is the most enjoyable part for those who run their own
business.

Candidate B : I hold on strongly to my opinion that opening a pet shop is an enjoyable

business to venture into. One of the main reasons is because I can hold a variety of classes on
the ways to train animals. I am sure that everyone would like to have a pet as their companion
but they are not willing to take this as a responsibility as they are afraid they might fail to train
them. In the end, their pet would become stray animals to be adopted by someone else. If I
hold classes on the ways to train animals, this would encourage more people to rear a pet as
they feel secure and confident that they have experienced people to ask when they encounter
difficult situations with their pets. Thus, opening a pet shop is an enjoyable business to
manage because I can share my knowledge on animals by opening classes.

Candidate D : I would not change my point of view that by managing a cake I can
promote my shop on social media such as Instagram and Facebook. I will take beautiful cake
photos in my shop and share them online. This would help me to expand my cake business
and meanwhile widen my circle of friends who have the same interest. As a saying goes,
"killing two birds with one stone".

Candidate B : Since time does not permit, I would like to bring this discussion to a
close. Factually speaking, this group does not have a common opinion as there are four
differing ideas to which business is the most enjoyable to manage. Thus, it is in tandem with
the saying “one’s man’s meat is another man’s poison.”
