Lack‌o
‌ f‌‌Communication‌‌Within‌D
‌ rop‌  ‌
Prepared‌‌by‌‌Breanna‌‌McClelland‌‌   ‌
Prepared‌‌for‌‌Brett‌‌Barley,‌‌Wendy‌‌Wheatly‌‌and‌‌Ronald‌‌Rye‌  ‌
May‌‌2021‌  ‌

Findings‌  ‌
 ‌
As‌‌of‌‌late,‌‌you‌‌may‌‌have‌‌noticed‌‌that‌‌our‌‌company’s‌‌productivity‌‌has‌‌not‌‌been‌‌keeping‌‌up‌‌with‌‌
expectations.‌‌After‌‌running‌‌a‌‌survey,‌‌we‌‌found‌‌that‌‌most‌‌employees‌‌believe‌‌that‌‌it‌‌is‌‌due‌‌to‌‌a‌‌lack‌‌of‌‌
communication.‌‌This‌‌lack‌‌of‌‌communication‌‌has‌‌cost‌‌us‌‌over‌‌15,000‌‌dollars‌‌in‌‌reparations‌‌and‌‌has‌‌
caused‌‌us‌‌to‌‌lose‌‌money‌‌and‌‌credibility.‌‌Because‌‌of‌‌the‌‌lost‌‌revenue‌‌and‌‌credibility,‌‌our‌‌company‌‌needs‌‌
to‌‌invest‌‌in‌‌starting‌‌an‌‌internal‌‌podcast‌‌to‌‌help‌‌with‌‌communication.‌‌   ‌
 ‌
The‌‌lack‌‌of‌‌communication‌‌has‌‌affected‌‌every‌‌person‌‌in‌‌our‌‌company.‌‌In‌‌our‌‌recent‌‌survey,‌‌we‌‌found‌‌
that‌‌78%‌‌of‌‌our‌‌employees‌‌feel‌‌that‌‌they‌‌can’t‌‌talk‌‌to‌‌their‌‌managers,‌‌63%‌‌of‌‌employees‌‌felt‌‌that‌‌they‌‌
had‌‌no‌‌way‌‌to‌‌talk‌‌to‌‌their‌‌co-workers‌‌and‌‌59%‌‌of‌‌managers‌‌felt‌‌that‌‌they‌‌couldn’t‌‌talk‌‌to‌‌employees‌‌
under‌‌their‌‌jurisdiction.‌‌This‌‌lack‌‌of‌‌
communication‌‌can‌‌greatly‌‌affect‌‌our‌‌
company‌‌and‌‌it‌‌is‌‌a‌‌growing‌‌problem.‌‌
This‌‌issue‌‌has‌‌the‌‌potential‌‌to‌‌affect‌‌
our‌‌morale‌‌and‌‌productivity‌‌(Krause,‌‌
2019).‌‌According‌‌to‌‌an‌‌article‌‌posted‌‌
by‌‌The‌‌Alternative‌‌Board,‌‌“W ‌ hen‌‌
workers‌‌don’t‌‌have‌‌access‌‌to‌‌people‌‌
and‌‌resources,‌‌they‌‌can’t‌‌effectively‌‌
perform‌‌their‌‌jobs.‌‌This‌‌can‌‌lower‌‌
morale‌‌and‌‌the‌‌motivation‌‌to‌‌perform‌‌
well,‌‌leading‌‌to‌‌a‌‌less‌‌productive‌‌
workforce.”(Krause,‌‌2019).‌‌As‌‌long‌‌as‌‌
our‌‌employees‌‌feel‌‌like‌‌they‌‌are‌‌
unable‌‌to‌‌ask‌‌questions‌‌to‌‌one‌‌another‌‌we‌‌run‌‌the‌‌risk‌‌of‌‌leading‌‌an‌‌unproductive‌‌team.‌‌This‌‌issue‌‌
affects‌‌more‌‌than‌‌just‌‌our‌‌employees.‌‌Back‌‌in‌‌2020,‌‌we‌‌partnered‌‌with‌‌Riot‌‌Games.‌‌Due‌‌to‌‌a ‌‌
communication‌‌error,‌‌we‌‌delivered‌‌20‌‌custom‌‌PC‌‌Towers‌‌that‌‌had‌‌the‌‌wrong‌‌colour‌‌scheme.‌‌This‌‌
mistake‌‌cost‌‌us‌‌over‌‌15,000‌‌dollars‌‌in‌‌reparations.‌‌This‌‌communication‌‌breakdown‌‌cost‌‌us‌‌not‌‌only‌‌
money,‌‌but‌‌our‌‌reputation.‌‌   ‌
 ‌

1‌

The‌‌lack‌‌of‌‌communication‌‌within‌‌our‌‌company‌‌will‌‌only‌‌cause‌‌us‌‌more‌‌issues‌‌similar‌‌to‌‌this‌‌one.‌‌So‌‌far‌‌
we‌‌have‌‌also‌‌seen‌‌this‌‌affect‌‌our‌‌company‌‌on‌‌a‌‌micro-level.‌‌The‌‌lack‌‌of‌‌communication‌‌is‌‌causing‌‌
employees‌‌to‌‌make‌‌simple‌‌mistakes,‌‌such‌‌as‌‌using‌‌the‌‌wrong‌‌models‌‌in‌‌custom‌‌builds.‌‌They‌‌are‌‌unsure‌‌
of‌‌who‌‌to‌‌speak‌‌to‌‌for‌‌help‌‌and‌‌are‌‌
therefore‌‌unable‌‌to‌‌perform‌‌well.‌‌If‌‌this‌‌
issue‌‌goes‌‌unresolved‌‌our‌‌company‌‌will‌‌
continue‌‌to‌‌lose‌‌reputation‌‌and‌‌money.‌‌
Based‌‌on‌‌a‌‌recent‌‌survey‌‌sent‌‌out‌‌to‌‌
partners‌‌and‌‌previous‌‌customers‌‌we‌‌have‌‌
found‌‌that‌‌due‌‌to‌‌mistakes‌‌we‌‌made,‌‌67%‌‌of‌‌
this‌‌demographic‌‌wouldn’t‌‌do‌‌business‌‌with‌‌
us‌‌again,‌‌23%‌‌will‌‌return‌‌and‌‌10%‌‌remain‌‌
undecided.‌‌If‌‌this‌‌matter‌‌isn’t‌‌solved‌‌soon‌‌
we‌‌will‌‌only‌‌see‌‌the‌‌number‌‌of‌‌
non-returning‌‌customers‌‌increase.‌‌   ‌
 ‌
 ‌
 ‌
Summary‌  ‌
 ‌
Difficulty‌‌communicating‌‌within‌‌our‌‌company‌‌remains‌‌a‌‌major‌‌problem.‌‌We‌‌have‌‌found‌‌that‌‌the‌‌
majority‌‌of‌‌employees‌‌and‌‌managers‌‌believe‌‌that‌‌they‌‌cannot‌‌talk‌‌to‌‌each‌‌other.‌‌This‌‌communication‌‌
barrier‌‌has‌‌created‌‌a‌‌barrier‌‌within‌‌our‌‌company‌‌causing‌‌mistakes.‌‌The‌‌severity‌‌of‌‌these‌‌mistakes‌‌differs,‌‌
some‌‌of‌‌the‌‌largest‌‌ones‌‌costing‌‌up‌‌to‌‌15,000‌‌dollars.‌‌For‌‌example,‌‌the‌‌incident‌‌with‌‌Riot‌‌Games.‌‌This‌‌
issue‌‌will‌‌also‌‌cause‌‌a‌‌great‌‌deal‌‌of‌‌harm‌‌to‌‌our‌‌company's‌‌morale‌‌and‌‌productivity‌‌(Krause,‌‌2019).‌ ‌It‌‌
will‌‌become‌‌increasingly‌‌difficult‌‌to‌‌run‌‌a‌‌productive‌‌company.‌‌Our‌‌employees‌‌are‌‌left‌‌in‌‌the‌‌dark‌‌and‌‌
unsure‌‌of‌‌who‌‌to‌‌turn‌‌towards‌‌to‌‌ask‌‌for‌‌help.‌ ‌This‌‌issue‌‌will‌‌continue‌‌to‌‌grow‌‌and‌‌with‌‌it,‌‌our‌‌
customer’s‌‌dissatisfaction‌‌due‌‌to‌‌mistakes‌‌made‌‌in‌‌orders.‌ ‌Because‌‌of‌‌the‌‌communication‌‌barrier‌‌
between‌‌our‌‌employees,‌‌we‌‌must‌‌invest‌‌in‌‌starting‌‌an‌‌internal‌‌company‌‌podcast.‌‌   ‌
 ‌
Recommendations‌  ‌
 ‌
To‌‌properly‌‌address‌‌this‌‌issue,‌‌we‌‌should‌‌start‌‌an‌‌internal‌‌company‌‌podcast.‌‌An‌‌internal‌‌company‌‌
podcast‌‌offers‌‌accessible‌‌leadership‌‌and‌‌offers‌‌a‌‌medium‌‌for‌‌instructions‌‌to‌‌reach‌‌all‌‌employees‌‌
(Cancialosi,‌‌2019).‌‌The‌‌podcast‌‌offers‌‌a‌‌method‌‌for‌‌us‌‌to‌‌ensure‌‌that‌‌all‌‌employees‌‌hear‌‌the‌‌same‌‌set‌‌of‌‌
instructions.‌‌This‌‌opportunity‌‌also‌‌allows‌‌employees‌‌to‌‌voice‌‌their‌‌opinions‌‌in‌‌regards‌‌to‌‌managers‌‌and‌‌
co-workers‌‌on‌‌a‌‌medium‌‌where‌‌everyone‌‌will‌‌hear‌‌them.‌‌Therefore,‌‌it‌‌opens‌‌the‌‌doors‌‌of‌‌further‌‌
communications,‌‌creating‌‌a‌‌more‌‌personal‌‌working‌‌environment.‌‌Of‌‌course,‌‌there‌‌is‌‌the‌‌possibility‌‌that‌
certain‌‌employees‌‌will‌‌not‌‌listen‌‌to‌‌the‌‌podcast.‌‌But,‌‌if‌‌we‌‌were‌‌to‌‌embed‌‌the‌‌episodes‌‌into‌‌our‌‌

2‌

homepage‌‌it‌‌allows‌‌employees‌‌to‌‌listen‌‌to‌‌a‌‌short‌‌episode‌‌when‌‌they‌‌first‌‌arrive‌‌to‌‌work‌‌in‌‌the‌‌morning‌‌
(Cancialosi,‌‌2019).‌‌This‌‌is‌‌the‌‌best‌‌option‌‌as‌‌it‌‌offers‌‌a‌‌uniform‌‌way‌‌to‌‌give‌‌instructions‌‌in‌‌regards‌‌to‌‌large‌‌
projects.‌‌Internal‌‌podcats‌‌also‌‌offer‌‌the‌‌ability‌‌to‌‌improve‌‌company‌‌functions‌‌as‌‌we‌‌have‌‌an‌‌efficient‌‌
medium‌‌to‌‌offer‌‌advice‌‌to‌‌employees.‌‌To‌‌start‌‌an‌‌internal‌‌company‌‌podcast,‌‌we‌‌would‌‌need‌‌to‌‌invest‌‌in‌‌
recording‌‌equipment‌‌and‌‌create‌‌a‌‌space‌‌dedicated‌‌to‌‌recording.‌‌Overall,‌‌the‌‌cost‌‌of‌‌this‌‌equipment‌‌
would‌‌be‌‌meagre‌‌in‌‌comparison‌‌to‌‌the‌‌money‌‌that‌‌we‌‌will‌‌lose‌‌if‌‌this‌‌problem‌‌isn’t‌‌solved‌‌soon.‌‌For‌‌the‌‌
reasons‌‌listed‌‌above,‌‌we‌‌should‌‌start‌‌an‌‌internal‌‌company‌‌podcast‌‌for‌‌the‌‌sake‌‌of‌‌easier‌‌and‌‌uniform‌‌
communication.‌‌   ‌
