This document provides a sample of a non-word decoding test given to assess a child's ability to read made-up words. The test contains 20 non-words divided into practice items and test items. For each non-word, space is provided to record the child's response. Observations from the assessment can also be noted. 1. Say: Here are some made-up words. They are not real words, so you have probably never seen them
before. But you can read them. Let’s try.
2. Have students read the practice items. Provide feedback as necessary.
3. Say: Alright, can you read the other words on your own? Start here (point to the first word in the
first row, and show him how to proceed to the next words/rows).
