SITUATION DESCRIPTION AND INITIAL JUDJEMENT
The video starts of with the situation in which people of
Nevada are standing infront of their houses and are telling
about the solar panels which have been installed on the
rooftop of their houses. They are also explaining how these
solar panels have helped them in keeping their electricity bills
down. After some time the laws were made against the
people who had installed solar panels by making electricity
much more expensive. Nevada electricity was purchased by
Warren Buffet and Solar City by Elon Musk. The only motive
of Bufffet was to fill his pocket and not considering about
environment.
Based on my initial impressions, I support Elon Musk's
position because solar energy benefits the environment
while maintaining cheap pricing. The only reason Buffet
dislikes it is that it does not put money in his pocket.
BUISNESS LEADER PROFILE OF ELON MUSK
Elon Musk was born in South Africa and is the founder of
X.com (PayPal), SpaceX, and Tesla Motors. Musk was born on
June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa.
Musk travelled to Canada at the age of 17 in 1989 to attend
Queen's University and dodge military service in South Africa.
Musk got his Canadian citizenship the same year, partly
because he thought it would be easier to get American
citizenship that way.
Zip2 Corporation
It was the first company founded by Elon Musk. It provided
internet version of yellow pages telephone directory with
maps included.
Tesla was named after Nikola Tesla and this company was
founded by two American entrepreneurs. Funding of this
company was done by Elon Musk which made him the co
founder of the company. By 2021, Tesla has become one of
the most rishest brand around the world.
In his free time, He used to read some quality books like “The
Hitchhiker’s Guide which helped him a lot in his career . He
also enjoys throwing parties, as seen by the lavish parties he
throws for his birthday and business celebrations.
BUISNESS LEADER PROFILE OF WARREN BUFFET
Buffett was born in Omahaon , 1930. . When buffet
was just 16, Buffett studied at the University of
Pennsylvania. He spent two years there before
transferring to the University of Nebraska to continue
his studies. After that he got masters degree from
Columbia University.
Despite the firm's success, Buffett closed it to focus on
Berkshire Hathaway's development. Buffet was ranked
no 1 as the world’s wealthiest man and no 3 in
2011.Overall, he is a very artistic and bright man.One
of the newspapers named Buffet as most powerful and
influential person.
Hobbies of Warren Buffet includes reading 500 pages
daily. He even loves to exercise daily and play financial
games which helps him see better patterns in his
investments. In his free time he likes to play bridge
with the retirees.
ASSESSMENT OF ETHICAL JUDJEMENT
1.UTILITY
No, the act did not maximise the benefits to those who
were or were assaulted as a result of it. When Warren
Buffett's firm asked to charge more for power, it upset
the entire community since, as a result of Solar City,
people's electricity bills were substantially cut, and in
order to sustain grid charges, the company raised the
bill rates. This act was done only for the purpose of
making money.
2. RIGHTS
Rights have a very crucial importance in the life. In
Nevada, the rights which were made for the benefit of
the people were lifted which led to reduce in the
number of savings of the people who had installed
solar panels on their rooftops. Warren Buffet’s
company increased the cost of electricity because the
bills were decreased with the entrance of Solar City.
This act disrespected the rights and hurt their
sentiments of the people.
3. JUSTICE
No, it was not fair since people were not treated fairly.
Even after protesting against Nevada Energy,
individuals were unable to obtain justice. People
installed solar panels as it reduced their electricity bills
and they thought the cost of the panels would be
covered within eight-ten years. Moreover, the
electricity produced by solar panels is also eco-friendly.
The fight between the people and Nevada Energy is
still going on, and the government is keeping quiet
about it because these bills bring in a lot of money to
their treasury.
4. CARING
There were no signs of caring that were shown by
Nevada energy. There main motive was to fill their
pockets and not caring about their environment. They
broke their healthy relations with people by heavily
charging for the bills. The Warren Buffet’s company
should think about environmental issues rather than
his financial savings.
NPUC DECISION
In a article the NPUC wrote that the subsidy is
uncooperative and will be providing more time to
people. The outcome of the class-action lawsuit is still
unknown, but NV energy stands to earn the most from
the net deal.
NEVADA NOW
The assembly bill 405 in March, received state
legislative acceptance. This bill insured that the rights
of the owners of solar panels will be protected. Now
the people who have installed solar panels have a
defence against higher solar charges.
ETHICAL JUDJEMENT MODEL
The war between the two most successful
entrepreneurs have led to cause a lot of problem for
common people. Warren Buffet’s company intention is
to only fill their pockets without protecting the
environment. Whereas, Elon Musk is the one who is
helping the people in saving their money and making
the best use of the natural resources like sun in
Nevada.
REFLECTION
I realised during this homework that just because you
are successful does not guarantee you are ethical. The
NPUC put its own values over the values of Nevadans,
disregarding ethical standards.
Ethics are extremely important in life, especially when
it comes to matters that might have a significant
impact on people's lives. In the example of the NPUC's
there was an un ethical treatment with the people who
had solar panels installed on their roofs.
At last, this case study helped me to learn about the
lifes of two most successful entrepreneurs. Ialso got a
lot of knowledge related to the problems that people
of Nevada faced after installing solar panels. After
studying about this situation, I learnt that we should
listen to both the sides when there is any conflict
between the people before coming to any solution.
