o A flame photometer is used to
determine the concentration of
potassium(K), Sodium(Na), Calcium
(Ca) and Lithium.
o It is used in the analysis of blood or
urine.
o Here lithium is used as a calibration
substance in the analysis of other 3
chemical substances.
o A colorimeter flame appears yellow
for sodium and violet for potassium
when their solutions are aspirated
into the flame.
o This characteristics is used in flame photometer.
o In this method fine droplets of the sample is aspirated into a glass flame that burns in
a chimney.
o A known amount of lithium salt is added to the sample as reference.
o As a result red light is emitted by lithium and yellow and violet beam are emitted due
to sodium and potassium respectively.
o These diffracted colors are made to incident on photodiodes
o The photo detector circuit consist of a reverse biased diode in which current flow
increases as the intensity of incident light increases.
o A calibration potentiometer is used in every channel.
o Since lithium is used as a standard reference, the output of sodium and potassium
channel are calibrated in terms of differences with the known lithium. The output can
be compared with the spectral illustrations.
