Question 1c (40 Marks)

The document outlines the design requirements for a reinforced concrete beam with specific dimensions and loading conditions. It specifies the beam's width, depth, spans, slab thickness, and material strengths, and requires a shear design and deflection check for an ultimate load of 150 kN/m. The effective depth is suggested to be 600 mm for the design calculations.

Question 1c (40 marks)

The reinforced concrete beam has a width, bw = 300 mm and an overall depth, h = 660 mm with
three equal spans, L = 5 m as shown in Fig. Q1. In the transverse direction, the beam spacings are
4 m centers with a slab thickness, hf = 180 mm. The supports have a width of 300 mm. Design the
beam (including shear design and deflection check) that carries an ultimate load of 150 kN/m
(Qk < Gk). The characteristic strengths of the concrete and steel are fck = 35 MPa and fyk = 460
MPa.

Hint: take effective depth = 600 mm
