Evaluating Functions
(Identify the degree of polynomial and
Simplifying Functions)
What are different kind of Functions?
REVIEW:
1. First Degree function whose general form is ax + by + c = 0
LINEAR FUNCTION.
2. Second Degree function whose general form is ax2 + by + c = 0
Its graph is called parabola.
QUADRATIC FUNCTION.
3. This function used as model for population growth and radioactive
decay, general form is y = bx where b >o and b ≠ 1
EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION
4. It is the inverse of exponential function, general form logb y = x
LOGARITHMIC FUNCTION
5. The function f ( x ) = a0xn + a1xn-1 + a2xn-2 +…an

If h ( 4 ) = 2h2 – 5h + 12, what is the value of h?
How to evaluate function?
h ( 4 ) = 2h2 – 5h + 12 SUBSTITUTION
h ( 4 ) = 2( 4 )2 – 5( 4 ) + 12 SIMPLIFY
= 2 ( 16 ) – 5 ( 4 ) + 12
= 32 – 20 + 12
H ( 4 ) = 24
2. h ( - 5 ) = h3 + 4h2 – 7h - 45
h ( - 5 ) = h3 + 4h2 – 7h - 45 SUBSTITUTION
h ( - 5 ) = ( - 5)3 + 4( - 5 )2 – 7( - 5 ) - 45 SIMPLIFY (PEMDAS)
= ( - 125 ) + 4 ( 25 ) – 7 ( - 5) - 45
= - 125 + 100 + 35 - 45
h ( - 5 ) = - 35
Note: ( -5 )2 = 25 if your base is negative with even number exponent your answer is positive
( - 5 )3 if your base is negative with odd number exponent your answer is negative
