Understanding Variables Basics

The document discusses variables in mathematics and real-life situations. It defines variables as quantities that change in relation to one another. Variables can be represented by symbols or letters. There are two types of variables: independent variables, which do not depend on other variables for their value; and dependent variables, which depend on the value of another variable. Several examples are provided, such as an equation where y is the dependent variable that depends on the independent variable x. Students complete multiple activities to practice identifying variables in scenarios and classifying them as independent or dependent.

Slide 1

-In our day to day life, we are dealing with quantities that change in relation to one another. These
quantities are referred to as variables.

Slide 2

-In mathematics, these variables can be represented by symbols or any letter in the alphabet.

Slide 3

-Variables can control by another variable and depends on another variable.

-Let us begin this lesson by determining variables in real-life situations.

Slide 4

Let’s do activity 1. In this activity we are going to determine the quantities that change or the variable in
the following situations.

-read and answer no. 1

Slide 5

Read no. 2

what are the quantities or variables?

Very Good!

Slide 6

Read no. 3

what are the quantities or variables?

excellent!

Slide 7

Read no. 4

what are the quantities or variables?

Nice job!

Slide 8

Read no. 5

what are the quantities or variables?

excellent! You are now able to determine a variable.

Slide 9

-We have two kinds of variables, first is the independent variable

-Read definition of independent variable

Slide 10
-An independent variable is a variable that does not depend on any other variable for its value. For
example, in an expression, y = 2x + 1, x is an independent variable.

If we control the value of x, let’s say x = 2, the value of y = 5

X = 3, y=7

X= -1, y = -1

X = -2, y = -3

So, for each value of x in the table, there will be a different value of y.

Slide 11

Next is dependent variable. Read definition

Slide 12

A dependent variable is a variable in an expression that depends on the value of another variable. For
example, if y = 2x + 1, y is the dependent variable.

In the table. y depends on x. So, if x = 2, then y = 5

X = 3, y=7

X= -1, y = -1

X = -2, y = -3

Slide 13

Let’s do activity no. 2

In this activity were going to consider a scenario and answer the following questions

Read scenario

Read q1, very good

Slide 14

Read q2, excellent

Read q3, correct

Slide 15

Read q4, superb

Slide 16

-Read q5, awesome

Slide 17

-Read q6, correct

-Read q7, very good

-No, in reality liza can only work up to 8 hours. This is the maximum number of working hours in a day.
Unless she decided to have 2 hours overtime making it 10-hour working in a day. Also no one in the
neighborhood allow her to clean the backyard during the night when the owner is already sleeping.

Slide 18

-To further understand independent and dependent variables, let’s do activity 3. In this activity Classify
the Variable whether Independent or Dependent.

Read 1. Correct!

Slide 19

-Read 2 and 3. Outstanding!

Slide 20

-Read 4 and 5, excellent

Slide 21

-To firm up your knowledge about dependent and independent variables, let’s do the last activity.

-in this activity, identify dependent and independent variables in the following statement.

Read q1 to 5.! Very good….
