FOREWORD
Civil engineers must be trained and exposed to engineering surveying
knowledge and practical skills. Surveying practice basically involves field
observations or data gathering, reduction of observation data, analysis,
adjustments and data processing. The results will be presented in numerical
and graphical formats such as traverse, detailing and contour plans. In
other words, knowledge in engineering survey will enable the civil engineers
to plan, analyse, interpret, evaluate and execute the surveying work such
related to civil engineering projects.

Students who are attending this camp have successfully completed the
theory and practice of engineering surveying (KA20403). Nevertheless, the
surveying projects that were undertaken are ‘stand-alone’ projects with
emphasis on the understanding of the concepts involved. Therefore, this
survey camp will provide training of the surveying work involved in a typical
civil engineering project.

The survey camp will give a holistic view of the surveying activities
needed prior to and during the construction stages of a civil engineering
project. Furthermore, the survey camp activities will train students in
planning and executing survey work on a larger scale. The surveying work
involved depends on the type of project undertaken, but normally include
establishing horizontal and vertical controls, detailing, earthwork
calculations and setting out.

Student will be assessed based on their oral presentation and written

reports submitted at the end of the camp. The basic and concepts of
surveying with emphasis towards engineering surveying will be introduced.

By end of the course, students should have the ability to apply theory
into practise; identify and solve surveying problems in civil engineering;
communicate effectively when presenting results and ideas; think positively
and making sound decisions by upholding ethics and function effectively in a
team to achieve a common goal.

ALL THE BEST AND ENJOY THE SURVEY CAMP

SYNOPSIS
After successfully completing course KA20403, students are well
exposed to the theory and practice of surveying. Nevertheless, surveying
projects that were undertaken so far are ‘stand alone’ projects with
emphasis on the understanding of the concepts involved. Therefore, this
subject provides training of the surveying work involved in a typical civil
engineering project. In other words, this subject gives a holistic view of the
surveying activities needed prior to and during the construction stage of a
civil engineering project.

The course will furthermore, train students in planning and executing

survey works on a larger scale. The surveying works involved depend on the
type of project undertaken, but normally include establishing horizontal and
vertical controls, detailing, earthwork calculations and setting out. Students
are assessed based on their oral presentation and written reports submitted
at the end of the course.

This subject introduces the basics and concepts of surveying in general

with emphasis towards engineering surveying. Basic surveying needs
commonly required in civil engineering are explained. Methods of
establishing horizontal & vertical controls, detailing for producing site plans,
area and volume estimations, road curves geometric design and setting out
are discussed. Students are introduced to the typical field tasks as required
in civil engineering. Common methods of field procedures, bookings and
reduction of observations are adopted.

Students are expected to be able to establish horizontal and vertical

controls, setting out and detailing. The importance of surveying field
JIMMYSON
A N A Kactivities prior to the design and during the construction stages in civil

engineering work is highlighted. Since accuracy of survey work is vital in
ensuring designs are exactly positioned, students must be able to conduct
survey works that meet standard accuracies.

PROJECT BRIEF
Information gathered from the Ministry of Tourism indicates that there is a
dramatic increase in demands for budget chalets. This demand is due to
increasing number of local and foreign visitors to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. This
is a business opportunity for the management of Outdoor Development
Centre (ODEC) UMS, and therefore they have decided to develop chalet
area at UMS beach.

The development project will be divided into three phases:

Project-I: The Surveying Race

To locate the existing known points which were previously marked along the
existing access road to ODEC area. (This is related to your project on “The
Surveying Race”)

Project-II: Reclamation
Reclamation project to develop ODEC chalets. This project will cover ground
survey and mapping activities including traversing, levelling and detailing.
The site plan of the survey area will be used to estimate volume of backfill
material required for the reclamation work.

Project-III: Setting Out & As-Built Survey

Setting-out of proposed chalets development prior to the actual
construction. The setting out of these chalets will be verified & confirm by
the project consultant.

PROJECT I :
THE SURVEYING RACE
PROJECT TITLE

“THE SURVEYING RACE”

INTRODUCTION

This project will train students to plan and execute the traverse fieldwork to
search and locate existing control points from known control points by using
the link traverse method. The coordinates of the starting points and the
control point to be searched will be provided.

SCOPE OF WORKS

1. Execute link traverse survey from two known control points to locate the
position of the existing control points (hidden wooden pegs written with
numbers).
2. Students must plan their traverse work and execute all traverse
computations and data reduction on the spot during the fieldwork.
3. The traverse work must fulfil the second class traverse survey standard.

PROJECT TITLE

“PROPOSED LAND RECLAMATION PROJECT OF OUTDOOR

DEVELOPMENT CENTRE (ODEC), UMS KOTA KINABALU SABAH.”

INTRODUCTION

Project 1 will cover surveying activities such as traversing, levelling and

detailing survey in the existing ODEC area and the proposed reclamation
area. As civil engineer, your mission will include preparation of related site
plans (existing and additional area, layout of the additional chalet and
earthwork calculations. You may require to include (in your presentation)
issues such as impacts of the project on the surrounding environment.

SCOPE OF WORK

1. Site visit
2. Traverse survey to establish horizontal control
3. Levelling to establish vertical control
4. Detail survey along the existing access road and beach area
5. Preparation of traverse plan, details plan and contour plan
6. Volume calculations including recommended type of materials to be used

PROJECT III:
SETTING OUT & AS-BUILD SURVEY

PROJECT TITLES

“SETTING-OUT & AS-BUILT SURVEY”

INTRODUCTION

This project will expose students to the how to execute the setting out work,
managing and handling setting- out fieldwork base on information given.
The lay-out of the proposed chalets will be provided. As-built survey will be
executed upon the completion of the setting out work.

SCOPE OF WORKS

1. Assigned groups will conduct discussion on the best method to be used

to execute the setting out work.
2. The calculations for setting out data are to be done prior to the setting
out fieldwork.
3. Upon the completion of the setting out work all groups must re-observe
the setting out points marked on the ground from another independent
control point to verify their accuracy.
