System Requirements
• Pentium III or compatible running at 700MHz
• 128MB of RAM
• 20GB of hard drive space
• CD-ROM Drive

• Compatible vehicle adapter
• Microsoft® Windows® 2000, SP3, IE 5.5 or
Microsoft Windows XP, SP1, IE 6.0

Note: A parallel port is recommended, but not required

Installation
1. Insert the Hyster Company 1 - 8 Ton PC Service Tool (hereafter referred
to as “PC Service Tool”) CD into your CD-ROM drive. The installation
process starts automatically.

2. If installation does not automatically start, use Windows Explorer® to


navigate to (CD-ROM drive):\setup.exe and double-click the setup.exe file.

3. Select a language from the language drop-down list, and click the next
button. The Welcome window displays. Note that the language chosen
during this step will become the default language for the PC Service Tool
application however, a different language may be chosen at a later time
from the Application Configuration screen.

4. Click Next, the license agreement window displays.

5. Click Yes to accept the license agreement and continue installation. The
Choose Destination Location window displays.

6. The installation program automatically chooses to install the PC Service


Tool software at “C:\Program Files\ Hyster\PC Service Tool.” You may
choose another location by clicking the Browse button, navigating to the
desired location, and clicking OK. Click the Next button to continue the
installation. Choose a user from the list shown, and click the Next button
(if no users are listed, click the Next button). Review your installation
settings, and click the Next button. The Setup Status window displays to
show the progress of the PC Service Tool software setup.

7. Next, the InstallShield® Wizard Complete window displays to indicate that


the installation has successfully completed. Please view the “readme” file
before exiting installation.

8. If prompted, choose whether to restart the computer now or at a later


time. Click the Finish button to exit setup.

9. Additional software may need to be installed. Please follow the onscreen


prompts to complete those installations.

Note: Adobe® Reader 7.0 is required and is installed automatically.

Note: Drivers for supported RP1210A vehicle communications adapters are


required and must be installed according to the adapter’s installation instructions.

Launching the PC Service Tool
To begin using the PC Service Tool, double-click its icon (fig. 1) on your Windows
desktop.

Alternately, you can also launch the PC Service Tool by clicking the Start button,
then clicking the Programs menu, the PC Service Tool menu, and then the PC
Service Tool icon.

Application Authorization and Passwords
Upon launching the PC Service Tool, a dialog box labeled Authorization will be
displayed on top of the application main screen (fig. 2).

Follow the instructions to call the appropriate phone number and provide the
key(s) in this dialog. Enter the password(s) provided and press the OK button to
proceed.

Note: The user will be notified on the first day of the month of password
expiration that a new password will be needed. The password expires on the last
day of the expiration month.

Note: In order to access features via the Truck Configuration menu, a valid
Service Level or Programming Level password is required. In order to access
features via the Programming menu, a valid Programming Level password is
required. For more information, see the Service and Programming Level
Passwords section.

Main Screen

Figure 3

The main screen is shown upon startup and displays various data such as
support phone numbers and version information. Three connection-specific
boxes are also shown at the top of the window: vehicle serial number (only
during active connections), on line and off line status, and the state of active
codes.

Application Configuration
In order to change the application’s language and units of measure, to check for
updates that may be available for the PC Service Tool, or to manage 3rd party
applications, proceed to the Application Configuration dialog by selecting the
File menu, and choosing Application Configuration.

To close the Application Configuration dialog, click the Close button.

General Tab
To change the application’s default language, select a language from the
Language Selection drop down box and click the Apply button.

To change the application’s default unit of measure, select the type of measure
from the Unit of Measure Selection drop down box and click the Apply button.

3rd Party Applications
To add a 3rd party application so that it can be accessed from the File menu of
the main screen, click the 3rd Party Applications tab of the Application
Configuration dialog box.

To add a 3rd party application, enter a name for the application that will appear
on the main screen’s File menu. Click the … button and browse to the 3rd party
application’s executable file in the Open dialog box and double-click the
executable. Enter any command line parameters in the Command Line field, and
click the Add button. This third party application is added to the application list.

To edit an existing 3rd party application, select it in the list view and make
changes to any of the configuration fields and click the Update button.

Test any of the 3rd party applications listed by selecting it in the list view and
clicking the Test button.

To delete an existing 3rd party application, select it in the list view and click the
Delete button.

Service and Programming Level Passwords
In order to access features via the Truck Configuration menu, a valid Service
Level or Programming Level password is required. In order to access features
via the Programming menu, a valid Programming Level password is required.

To enter either a Service Level or Programming Level password, select the Add
Service & Programming Passwords from the main screen’s File menu.

Follow the instructions to call the appropriate phone number and provide the
key(s) in this dialog. To enter a single Service Level and/or Programming Level
password, enter the passwords(s) in the appropriate field(s) and press the OK
button to accept the password(s) and close the Passwords dialog.

To enter multiple Service Level and/or Programming Level passwords, enter the
password(s) in the appropriate field(s) and press the Apply button to accept the
password(s). The Passwords dialog generates new keys and remains open for
entering additional passwords.

If an attempt is made to access a link under the Truck Configuration or


Programming menus and a Service Level or Programming Level password has
not been entered, a dialog box is presented allowing the entry of such a
password (fig. 7).

Truck Communications
Connect to Truck
To connect to the vehicle network, make sure a connection has been established
to the vehicle data bus via an RP1210A-compliant adapter and appropriate
cabling and select Connect from the File menu. Figure 8 is shown. Select a
vendor and a device and click the Connect button. Upon a successful
connection, the application proceeds to the Fault Monitor screen.

Note: Only properly installed RP1210A-compliant adapters are displayed in the


Connection Dialog.

Disconnect from Truck


To disconnect from the vehicle network, select Connect from the File menu. Click
the Disconnect button.

Launch a 3rd Party Application
To launch a 3rd party application that has been configured via the Application
Configuration dialog box, select the Run item listed on the File menu (fig. 9).
Click the title of the 3rd party application to be launched.

See the section entitled “3rd Party Applications” for information on setting up 3rd
party applications.

Go To Web
Quickly launch Internet Explorer from within the PC Service Tool by selecting Go
To Web from the File menu.

Exiting PC Service Tool


To exit the PC Service Tool, select Exit from the File menu or click on the X icon
in the upper right corner of the main screen.

Note: If recording a playback file, a dialog box is displayed asking to save the
playback file before exiting.

Diagnostics Menu
Fault Monitor
To view the fault monitor, choose Fault Monitor from the Diagnostics menu.
Faults listed have been received since the initial connection to the vehicle (or
since the last time the Refresh button was clicked).

Items listed for each fault include: active or inactive status, source address (SA),
suspect parameter number (SPN), failure mode indicator (FMI), SPN description,
FMI description, amber warning status, malfunction indicator status, counts, and
engine hours.

Supplemental diagnostic data is listed at the bottom of the screen and contains
the following information: Engine Shutdown status, Service Engine Light status,
Service System Light status, Engine Coolant Temperature, and Transmission Oil
Temperature.

Press the Clear Active Faults or the Clear Inactive Faults buttons to clear
the active or inactive faults respectively.

Click the Refresh button to clear the fault list and re-read faults from the
databus.

To view troubleshooting information contained in the Troubleshooting Manual


associated with a specific SPN/FMI, click the relevant text in the FMI description
field. Adobe® Reader is launched and the relevant troubleshooting information is
displayed.

* Note: To update the Troubleshooting Manual, replace the file named


“TroubleshootingManual-EN.pdf” located in the PC Service Tool’s “Docs” folder.

Truck Information
To view truck information, choose Truck Information from the Diagnostics menu.

Each device listed displays the following information: source address (SA), device
name, make, model, serial number, software ID, calibration ID, and calibration
verification. Engine hours are displayed above the device list.

Software enabled features include the following items: engine type, hydraulic
type, and any optional truck features and their status.

Click the Refresh button to clear all items and re-read data from the databus.

Diagnostic Data Monitor
To view the diagnostic data monitor, choose Diagnostic Data Monitor from the
Diagnostics menu.

The Diagnostic Data Monitor displays diagnostic data items. The data items and
data groups are presented generally in the same order and structure as the truck
display’s diagnostic function.

Click the + and – symbol buttons next to the first item in each section to
collapse or expand that section’s list of items.

Custom Data Monitor
To view the custom data monitor, choose Custom Data Monitor from the
Diagnostics menu.

The custom data monitor allows for choosing only the data needed to be shown
on the Diagnostic Data Monitor. The list of customized data items are used as
long as the system connection is maintained. In addition, saving a custom data
list allows the list to be reused at a later date.

Items listed on the left side of the dialog are available to be added to the custom
data list. Items listed on the right have already been added to the custom list.

To add or remove items from the custom data monitor, follow one of these three
steps:

• Select any item or group on the left and click the Add > button to add that
item or group to the custom list, or click any item or group on the right and
click the < Remove button to remove that item or group from the custom
list.

• Click and hold the left mouse button on any item or group on the left and
drag that item(s) to the right to add it to the custom list, or drag any
item(s) from the right to the left to remove it from the custom list.

• Double-click any item or group on the left to add it to the custom list, or
double-click any item or group on the right to remove it from the custom
list.

To save a custom data list, click the Save button. Enter a name for the custom
data list in the dialog box and press the OK button.

To load a previously saved custom data list, select a custom data list from the
drop down box and click the Load button.

To delete a previously saved custom data list, select a custom data list from the
drop down box and click the Delete button.

Strip Chart
To view the strip chart, choose Strip Chart from the Diagnostics menu.

The strip chart supports up to 15 parameters to display on a graph. Parameters


currently on the graph are listed on the right side of the screen and indicate their
associated line color.

The top left of the graph contains a toolbar with the following functions (from
left to right): resume plotting, pause plotting, zoom out 50%, zoom in 50%, set
cursor (click this button, select a parameter on the right side of the screen, and
click a point on the chart where the cursor should be placed), and print the
current graph.

At the initial zoom level, the graph displays the last 10 seconds of data.

The Y-axis is automatically scaled to display the maximum value for any
parameter on the graph.

When plotting is paused, click and drag the X-axis to scroll the graph left and
right.

The strip chart selection dialog allows the selection of data needed to be shown
on the Strip Chart. The data items are used as long as the system connection is
maintained. In addition, saving and loading custom data lists allows the list to
be reused at a later date.

Items listed on the left side of the dialog are available to be added to the strip
chart. Items listed on the right have already been added to the chart.

To add or remove items from the strip chart, follow one of these three steps (a
maximum of 15 items can be chosen for display on the strip chart
simultaneously):

• Select any item or group on the left and click the Add > button to add that
item or group to the strip chart, or click any item or group on the right and
click the < Remove button to remove that item or group from the strip
chart.

• Click and hold the left mouse button on any item or group on the left and
drag that item(s) to the right to add it to the strip chart, or drag any item(s)
from the right to the left to remove it from the strip chart.

• Double-click any item or group on the left to add it to the strip chart, or
double-click any item or group on the right to remove it from the strip
chart.

Each item that appears on the strip chart can be uniquely color coded. Choose a
color from the drop down box for each item to customize the color. In addition, a
custom line type may be chosen.

To save the items listed for the strip chart, click the Save button. Enter a name
for the custom data list in the dialog box and press the OK button.

To load a previously saved strip chart, select a strip chart from the drop down
box and click the Load button.

To delete a previously saved strip chart, select a strip chart from the drop down
box and click the Delete button.

Playback Logs: Record Data
To begin recording data, choose Record Data from the Diagnostics menu. When
recording is to be stopped, select Stop Recording from the Diagnostics menu.
The Save Current Log File? dialog box is displayed (fig. 16):

Click the Yes button to save the log file. Enter a filename for the log file and
click the Save button.

Playback Logs: Playback Data


To begin playback of data, choose Playback Data from the Diagnostics menu. In
the File Open dialog box select the file to play back and click the OK button.
During playback, a status bar is added to the bottom of the window and displays
the following information: current time within the playback file, total time of the
playback file, and the filename of the playback file.

To stop playback, click the Stop Playback item on the Diagnostics menu.

Databus Viewer
Use the Databus Viewer to view all databus traffic. To view the databus viewer,
choose the Databus Viewer option from the Diagnostics menu.

Switch between hexadecimal or decimal views by checking or unchecking the


Hexadecimal checkbox at the bottom left of the screen.

Pause the message display by clicking the Pause button. To resume the
message display, click the Resume button. Pressing the Clear button will clear
the message display window. Click the Save button to begin writing the databus
traffic to a comma delimited text file. The filename of the saved file is
automatically assigned using the truck’s serial number, the current date, and the
current time; it is saved in the Databus Logs folder under the PC Service Tool’s
application folder.

Reports
Print multiple reports and, if desired, save the reports to a file.

Select Reports from the File menu.

Using the checkboxes under the Report Sections label, choose which sections to
include in the report (checked items will be included, unchecked items will not).
If Diagnostic Data has been checked, the Customize button is enabled and by
default all diagnostic data items are included in the report. Click the Customize
button to add or remove items from the diagnostic data portion of the report
(see the Custom Data Monitor section for information on how to add or remove
items).

If desired, enter a name in the Technician’s Name field and any comments that
should be included in the report.

Click the Print button to print the report.

Click the Save button to save the current report. The File Save As dialog appears
where the default filename of the report file is assigned using the truck’s serial
number, “Report”, the current date, and the current time. Click the OK button to
save the report.

To load a previously saved report, click the Load button. Double-click the report
file to view the report.

To delete a previously saved report, click the Delete button. The Delete Report
dialog box is shown (fig. 19).

Truck Configuration Menu
Note: In order to access features via the Truck Configuration menu, a valid
Service Level or Programming Level password is required.

Password Management: Manage Passwords


Select Manage Passwords from the Password Management submenu on the
Truck Configuration menu. The Load Passwords dialog box is displayed (fig. 20)
allowing you to load passwords from a truck, from a file, or to create a new
password file. Make a selection and click the OK button to proceed.

The Manage Passwords dialog box is displayed (fig. 21).

Security levels and passwords are loaded from the location chosen in the
previous dialog, and displayed in the Passwords section of figure 19. If the
Create New option was selected, the password list is blank.

To add a password, select a security level from the drop down box and enter a
password in the password field. Click the Add button. The password is added to
the password list. Note: a maximum of 100 passwords may exist in the password
list.

To change the security level or password of an existing item, select the row in
the password list and modify the security level from the drop down box or
change the password in the password field. Click the Update button. The row in
the password list is updated to reflect the changes.

To delete an existing item from the password list, select the row and click the
Delete button. The row in the password list is removed.

Click the Save To Truck button to save the password list to the truck. If the
save is successful, a dialog box is displayed asking if the password list should
also be saved to a file. Click Yes to save the password list to a file as well.

Click the Save To File button to save the password list to a file. The filename of
the saved file is assigned by default using the truck’s serial number, the current
date, and the current time.

Click the Print button to print a list of all security levels and passwords in the
password list.

Click the Close button to close the Manage Passwords window.

Password Management: Password Log
Select View Password Log from the Password Management submenu on the
Truck Configuration menu.

The password log is read from the truck. Click the Save button to save the
password log to a file. The filename of the saved file is assigned by default using
the truck’s serial number, the current date, and the current time.

Click the Print button to print the password log.

Password Management: Operator Password Settings
The operator password settings function sets the activation/deactivation status of
the Operator Password feature and allows the technician to set the Password
Time-Out Delay for Operator passwords. Operator passwords are a feature that
requires operators to enter valid passwords in order to operate the truck or
specific truck features. The Password Time-Out Delay setting determines the
period during which an operator is allowed to re-start the truck without re-
entering a password.

Select Operator Password Settings from the Password Management submenu on


the Truck Configuration menu.

Checking the checkbox activates the operator passwords function, unchecking


the checkbox disables the function. Set a time-out delay in minutes using the
drop down box. When done, hit the OK button to accept changes.

Language Management: Load Languages
The load languages function loads language files to the truck. Language files
must be created using the Language Creation utility that is accessed as described
above.

Select Load Languages from the Language Management submenu on the Truck
Configuration menu.

Select a language type (Default, Alternate, or Operator) from the first drop down
box and a language file from the second drop down box. Click the Apply button
to load the language. Press the Close button when finished.

Truck Set-up
Note: The engine must be off to perform set-up functions.

Select Truck Set-Up from the Truck Configuration menu.

Set parameters to the desired values by using the up/down arrows associated
with each parameter, or by using the drop down boxes where appropriate.

To save the values in the truck set-up, click the Save button. Enter a name for
the set-up in the dialog box and press the OK button.

To load a previously saved set-up, select a truck set-up from the drop down box
and click the Load button.

To delete a previously saved set-up, select a truck set-up from the drop down
box and click the Delete button.

Click the Update Truck button to store all values to the truck.

To restore all parameters to the truck’s default values, click the Restore
Defaults button.

Click the Close button to close the Truck Set-Up window.

Programming Menu
Note: In order to access features via the Programming menu, a valid
Programming Level password is required.

Copy CDF to Display Controller


This is needed only if a new CDF is loaded into the VSM to enable a feature (i.e.
light package). This task is needed if the Display reads “Display-VSM Mismatch.”

Copy CDF to Display Controller copies the VSM’s CDF to the Display controller.
This provides an on-vehicle backup copy of the CDF.

Select Copy CDF to Display Controller from the Programming menu. A message
box appears indicating the success, failure, or time-out status of the request.

Truck Programming
Before programming, CDF or application firmware, these files need to be located
in the following directories:

VSM Application Firmware:


C:\Program Files\Hyster\PC Service Tool\Programming\VSM Application

Display Application Firmware:


C:\Program Files\Hyster\PC Service Tool\Programming\Display Application

VSM Calibration Files:


C:\Program Files\Hyster\PC Service Tool\Programming\VSM Calibration

The truck programming dialog writes VSM Calibration (CDF) files, VSM
application firmware, or Display application firmware to the VSM or Display
controllers.

Select Truck Programming from the Programming menu.

The truck serial number is displayed in the dialog along with any currently
selected file type and filename.

Click the Close button to close the Truck Programming window and exit without
programming the truck.

To program the truck, select a file type and filename from the drop down boxes.
Click the Program button. The programming status window is displayed (fig.
27).

When the programming status is completed, a message box is displayed stating


whether programming was completed successfully or not.

Help Menu
Help Topics
To view on-line help for the PC Service Tool, select Help Topics from the Help
menu. Using the on-line help, you can navigate and search the help system.

Troubleshooting Manual
To view the troubleshooting manual for the PC Service Tool, select
Troubleshooting Manual from the Help menu.

* Note: To update the Troubleshooting Manual, replace the file named


“TroubleshootingManual-EN.pdf” located in the PC Service Tool’s “Docs” folder.

About PC Service Tool


Click the About PC Service Tool item from the Help menu. Version and build as
well as copyright information is displayed in the About dialog. Click the OK
button to close.

Uninstallation
1. Click the Start button.

2. Under Windows 2000, click “Settings” then “Control Panel.” Under


Windows XP, click on the “Control Panel” icon on the start menu.

3. Click the “Add or Remove Programs” icon.

4. Click on the Hyster PC Service Tool item, and click the “Change/Remove”
button.

5. If any additional software was installed during installation, it will need to


be removed separately.
