Smartphone Impact on Student Performance

This document examines the advantages and disadvantages of smartphone use among selected high school students and its impact on academic performance. A survey was conducted among 40 grade 9-10 students to understand their smartphone usage patterns and perceptions. The results showed that most students spend over 3 hours daily on their smartphones, especially after class. While 95% felt smartphones are useful for studies and internet is important, 95% also believed there are negative impacts like lack of concentration. The study aims to help students balance smartphone use and studies as well as inform parents and teachers.

THE ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE OF HAVING SMARTPHONES

ON SELECTED STUDENTS IN THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

S.Y.2018-2019

I. INTRODUCTION

A. Rationale

Cellphones have been used in class for many years now, mostly for phone

calls and simple texting. Smartphones can do so much more, and many things

can be done without the teacher noticing. So, we wonder, are smartphones a big

distraction in class? And, how many students find that smartphones are actually

useful for school work in class? Are there more of these students than those

who seem to be easily distracted when the teacher’s back is turned?

Smartphones are ubiquitous and we want to know about the smartphone’s

advantages and disadvantages for students in the classroom. We used a

questionnaire that asks about when and why the students use smartphones in

class. Further, we got actual counts of what students do with their smartphones

in class with an observation checklist. We have noticed some cases when

smartphone usage in class is very high, mainly when students take out their
smartphones in order to kill time. However, we found a few of them use a

smartphone to help with classroom difficulties and questions. We discuss the

impact of cellphones on classroom study.

B. Conceptual Framework

To kill time

ADVANTAGE To help with classroom

difficulties and questions

Instant
Communication

SMARTPHONES

Addiction

DISADVANTAGE
Lack of concentration
in class
Students become relaxed and
lazy towards their school
works so this then affects
their school works

II. THE PROBLEM

A. Statement of the Problem

This paper aims of study the advantage and disadvantage of

having smartphones of students on their academic performance.

Specifically, it seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the students in terms of:

a. Gender;
b. Grade Level;
c. Age

2. What are the advantage and disadvantage of smartphones in students in

terms of:
a. Time spent in using smartphones;
b. Instance he or she using smartphones;
c. Negative effect of smartphones

3. Do you think smartphone are useful in your study?

4. Would you classify internet as an important part of a smartphones?

5. Which of these is your favorite feature?

6. Do you consider this feature to be an important part of smartphones?

B. Significance of the Study

The important of the study is to gain some information of those students

who keeps using smatphones in school campus. Theoretically, this study is

expected to give a contribution as related sources for the further and more

expanded study of this area.

STUDENTS – this study will help the students to balance their study and

using smartphones, they must use it after class or in purposes.

TEACHERS – this study will help the teachers to know the same reason of their

students why they use smartphones during class.

PARENTS – this study will also help the parents to encourage their children to

listen in the class, it will also help inform the parents what is

the reason why they use smartphones during class, if ever they will
know it there are maybe possibilities that they will be more

enchance on their responsibilities.

COMMUNITY – this study will inform them about the advantage and

disadvantage of using smartphones so that they can guide

the students.

C. Definition of Terms

 Ubiquitous – existing or being everywhere at the same time.

computer typically is having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and
an operating system capable of running downloaded applications.

enrolled in a school or college.
III. METHODOLOGY

A. Research Methodology

The researcher used survey questionnaire sheets. These were

given to forty (40) high school students from Grade 9 to Grade 10. The

questionnaires were randomly distributed among students. This study was

conducted in Don Gerardo Ll. Ouano Memorial National High School,

Opao, Mandaue City. In analyzing the data gathered, the researcher use

simple percentage and frequency method using the following formula:

P = F/n x 100%

where:

P is the total percentage;

F is the total frequency; and

n is the total number of respondents

B. Data Gathering

level of technology but if it is used properly and sensibly. Parents should take

care of their kids that if they are giving them mobile phones then it should be

used beneficially rather that spoiling them.

D. Recommendation

This research shows that most of the students of Don Gerardo Ll.

Ouano Memorial National High School are using smartphones after class.

Therefore, the future researcher must expand their study to determine why

students using smartphones.
