SSN

Social Security Numbers (SSNs) in the United States are issued by the Social Security Administration and unlike identification numbers in other countries, SSNs contain limited personally identifiable information. SSNs are composed of nine digits split into three sections - an area number, group number, and serial number. While SSNs may indicate the state where an individual applied prior to 2011, they generally do not reveal much personal data about the holder.

Security Administration (SSA). Unlike in other countries where national

identification numbers provide a wealth of information, such as Mexico or in the
Balkans, an individuals SSN may not contain a great amount of personally
identifiable information (PII). However, it can provide the individuals state of
application or mailing address at the time they applied for a SSN that was issued
prior to the implementation of SSN Randomization on June 25, 2011.
