WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

Directions: Complete the statements below by providing correct information based on what you have
learned from this module. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Concept paper is a summary document of a project proposal that tells what the project is all about, the
reasons for conducting the project, and how it will be carried out. This paper also provides an overview of
the project, and help funding agencies eliminate proposals that are likely to be disapproved.

The three ways to elucidate a concept are Definition identifies a term and sets it apart from all other terms
that may be related to it. Often, definitions begin by mentioning the general class to which a term belongs.
Then they provide specifics to distinguish the term from other members of that class. Explication is the
process by which concepts are defined for scientific purposes. "To explicate" something is, in the most
general sense of the term, to spell out its implications and Clarification is a method of explanation in which
the points are organized from a general abstract idea to specific and concrete examples.

Concept paper is important because it helps the supervisor assess whether the study is relevant, feasible,
and worthwhile. If not, they may suggest studying a different research question. It also helps the supervisor
gauge your understanding of research, and therefore, if you are likely to need support (and if so, how much)
in conducting the study.

WHAT I CAN DO
Directions: Choose one concept that is related to your track and write a mini-concept paper with
500- 800 words. Use the techniques in elucidating a concept. Be guided with the criteria that is presented
below.

Arnis: The Philippines' National Sport

Arnis enjoys the status of the de jure national sport of the Philippines. It is a martial art characterized
by the use of “swinging and twirling movements, accompanied by striking, thrusting and parrying
techniques for defense and offense.” Having been handed down from generation to generation for centuries,
the discipline hones the skill, speed, accuracy, and agility of its practitioners. Arnis was developed by the
indigenous populations of the Philippines, who used an assorted range of weaponry for combat and self-
defense. Encompassing both simple impact and edged weapons, arnis traditionally involved rattan, swords,
daggers, and spears.
In 1521, equipped with nothing more than bladed weapons and their fearsome arnis abilities,
Filipino islanders defeated Ferdinand Magellan’s armored, musket-bearing Spanish conquistador forces
when they tried to invade. When the Spanish eventually returned and successfully conquered parts of the
Philippines, the traditions of arnis were preserved, despite its prohibition, in the forms of ritual dance,
performance, and mock battles. While earlier Filipino martial arts were influenced by Spanish colonization,
the modern forms have been affected by the country’s contact with both the United States and Japan after
gaining independence in 1898. Just over a century later, in 2009, the government of the Philippines declared
arnis to be the martial art and national sport of the Philippines.
Arnis is otherwise known as eskrima, kali, and garrote, and by even more names in different
Filipino regional languages. Although Spanish influence had a pacifying effect on Filipino martial culture,
the original warrior ethos has persisted and remains on the fringes of the art. Arnis “death-matches” were
outlawed as late as 1945 yet, as Mark V. Wiley explains in Filipino Martial Culture, they still take place in
private today. The Philippine government’s declaration of arnis as the national sport has codified a clear
martial culture. This should begin to develop an accessible story of Filipino cultural heritage that the outside
world can grasp as Japan did during the Edo period (1603-1868) and as post-cultural revolution, China has
done with Wushu
Like all martial arts, arnis is primarily defensive, encompassing hand-to-hand combat, grappling,
and disarming techniques. However, the fighting style also includes the use of bladed weapons and sticks,
in addition to improvised weapons. A baton-like cane is the primary melee tool employed and the weapon
used in officiated arnis competitions. Competitive Arnis generally takes one of two forms: the performance-
based anyo model or the combative leban. Anyo competitions are judged based on the overall choreography
of the performances, including the gracefulness, strength, and force employed. Meanwhile, the leban form
tests participants’ agility and reactions, as competitions are judged based on the number of strikes inflicted.
Although most leban competitions exclude body contact, such as grappling, blocks, and disarming an
opponent using the hands or feet, there are some exceptions where full contact is permitted.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
Directions: Imagine that you are the SK Chairman or one of the leaders in your barangay during
this time of COVID-19 pandemic. Think of a project which can help your kabarangays to prevent the virus.
However, the SK funds this year cannot suffice the project’s completion. Present a short description of this
project to a private institution in order to obtain funds for this noble cause. You may print out your outputs
or you may also present it through Powerpoint. Be guided with the criteria that is presented below.

DO IT YOURSELF
(Project title)

(Short description)
Do-It-Yourself Hand Disinfectant and Washable Mask Project. I want to use my position to
mobilize other youth and available fund to make homemade protection kits. During this time of crisis, I
realized that I have an opportunity to lead other people to do something to fight COVID-19. I stepped up
and launched this project so that the residents can protect themselves from the virus. My project is proven
helpful to families especially that many of them can’t afford to protection kits. To avoid crowding, Me and
the other elected officers will distribute the protection kits house to house. Each family received a set of
hand disinfectants and washable face masks. They also share about COVID-19 awareness to the families
while distributing. In making the hand disinfectant, we followed the official instructions shared by the
Department of Health, the government’s health bureau.

(Cost estimation)
The budget will likely go around 15 thousand pesos. The breakdown of the things that we need in
preparations for this project are the following. The pump bottles are ranging around 30 pesos, the
ingredients that are needed in making the hand sanitizer provided by the Department of Health cost between
100-200 per 10 bottles. For the mask, the canvas that we will is a thick one that costs around 60 per yard,
so that the virus will not penetrate to our mouth and nose area, which are the ways in how the virus will
enter our body. For the sewing threads, it will cost 50 pesos for the whole production of the face mask. For
the strap, we are going to order online and based on what we research. The strap plays around 25-30 pesos
per piece. Lastly, we will hire a tailor so that the face mask will be perfectly done and no mistake. Their
labor will go around 300 per day. This production of hand sanitizers and face masks will be distributed to
100 families.

SUMMARY OF WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

A concept paper is a summary document of a project proposal that tells what the project is all about,
the reasons for conducting the project, and how it will be carried out. This paper also provides an overview
of the project, and help funding agencies eliminate proposals that are likely to be disapproved. It has several
uses: serves a foundation of the full proposal, determines whether the project is feasible or not, piques the
interest of the potential funding agencies, obtains informal feedback on the ideas before preparing the full
proposal, helps in addressing social issues that plague our society. A concept paper aims to clarify a concept
that can be about any topic from any field. It can also be a summary that tells the reader what the project is,
why it is important, and how it will be carried out. It aims to capture the thoughts and ideas while the
research proposal captures the ideas in a structured manner for approval to research. It is not easy to write
a concept paper but with careful study and research, you can create one. The three ways to elucidate a
concept are Definition identifies a term and sets it apart from all other terms that may be related to it. Often,
definitions begin by mentioning the general class to which a term belongs. Then they provide specifics to
distinguish the term from other members of that class. Explication is the process by which concepts are
