Application to the 2013/2014 [International Firm] Clerkship Program
Dear [Hiring Manager],
My name is Amy Johns and I am currently in my penultimate year of a combined degree in
Law/Arts (Spanish/French) at the [G08-University].
I am deeply interested in securing a clerkship position at [International Firm], as it would
provide me with the opportunity to begin my legal career with one of the world’s leading firms,
particularly so following the recent [new development]. My desire to work at [International
Firm], was reinforced by the impressive clerkship presentation that the firm gave at
[university]. I was struck by the professionalism of the people associated with the firm, and
their clear pride for what the firm stands for.
My interest in commercial law has primarily developed from recent employment at [Top Tier
Firm]. In this role I supported the Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) team, where I was fortunate
enough to work in a highly talented legal team and learnt about the requirements of working in
a top-performing firm, which like [International Firm], expects excellence. I relished the
opportunity to contribute to resolving complex legal problems, and I look forward to furthering
these skills when I commence my new role as a paralegal for at [Top Tier Firm] in [city] next
semester.
Outside the commercial context, I have gained valuable work experience that has provided me
with skills applicable to the legal profession. I completed volunteer work with the Department
of Justice, where I provided administrative and research support to a Barrister who specialised
in pro-bono services. During my university holidays I have worked as a bar attendant at the
Smith Hotel, and I continue to work as a babysitter in [city] on a regular basis.
Outside my work experience I have pursued a variety of academic activities, which have
complemented the skills I have gained in my university and work experience. I have developed
my advocacy skills by participating in the Debating Team and Mooting Team, where I regularly
compete in intra and inter-university competitions. I am also proud of my work in the Law
Student’s Society Project research program. In this program, my team conscientiously worked
towards producing a paper that explored a range of social justice issues, and was submitted to a
Law Reform Inquiry for consideration.
It is clear the at [International Firm] attract only the very best lawyers, who all contribute to
a range of highly respected practice groups. It was a testament to the firm that [x] practice
groups received Band 1 in the Chamber & Partners Report. In what is evidently a changing legal
landscape, with the recent ‘internationalisation’ of Australian law firms, it is clear that
[International Firm] has adapted impressively by expanding itself.
Thank you taking the time to consider my application and I look forward to discussing it
with you further.
Yours Sincerely,
