PREFACE
With the great benefits that translation brings, the translation industry is gradually
asserting its position and role, being recognized by the world in the current globalization
process. Therefore, choosing a notarized translation service or translating medical
documents, banking, ... is very necessary. Because the team of translators - interpreters
need to be fully equipped with knowledge, as well as professional qualifications in both
languages to be able to process and perform the job content accurately and efficiently. .
Through the process of studying the Theory of Translation - taught by Ms. Le Thi
Nhung, I would like to choose a topic “ Summarize translation methods learnt in about
500 – 550 words. For each type, give at least two examples, one being English –
Vietnamese translation, and one Vietnamese – English translation”

What is the difference between a translation method and a technique? It is quite
simple: a translation method is applied to the entire text to be translated, while a
translation technique may vary within the same text on a case-by-case basis depending
on the specific verbal elements to be translated. Translation methods are classified and
understanded as below:
1. Borrowing
Borrowing is a translation technique that involves using in the target text the same
word or expression found in the original text. The word or expression borrowed is
usually written in italics. This is about reproducing an expression in the original text as is.
- Email => Email Borrowing does not change subject form and
Example: - Internet => Internet semantics.
(Vay mượ n khô ng thay đổ i đề hình thứ c và ngữ
nghĩa.)
- Canteen => Că ng tin Borrowing changes subject form but does not
semantics.
(Vay mượ n thay đổ i đề hình thứ c nhưng ngữ
nghĩa khô ng đổ i)
2. Calque
Calque is a special type of borrowing. When translators uses a calque, they are
creating or using a neologism in the target language by adopting the structure of the
source language.
- Showroom => Phò ng trưng bà y
Example: - Heavy industry => Cô ng nghiệp nặ ng
3. Literal
A literal translation is a metaphrase. This means a word-for-word translation,
achieving a text in the target language which is as correct as it is idiomatic. It is
acceptable only if the translated text retains the same syntax, the same meaning and the
same style as the original text.
- I love you => Anh yêu em
Example: - Shutup! =>Im miệng đi!
4. Transposition
Transposition involves moving from one grammatical category to another without
altering the meaning of the text.
- Shark =>Ngườ i đầ u tư
Example: - It is easy to talk =>Nó i thì dễ
- It is so bad with my English =>Tiếng Anh củ a tô i rấ t kém.
5. Modulation
This is a method of changing the form of the text by introducing a semantic change
or perspective.
- At that time =>Tạ i thờ i điểm đó
Example: - At the moment => Ngay lú c này
6. Adaption
Adaptation, also called cultural substitution or cultural equivalent, is a cultural
element that substitutes the original text with one that is better suited to the culture of
the target language. This results in a more familiar and comprehensive text.
- Going with the time =>Theo dò ng thờ i gian
Example: - Gone with the win =>Cuố n theo chiều gió
- Men make home, women make house =>Đà n ô ng xâ y nhà đà n bà xâ y tổ
ấm
- Diamond cut diamond => Vỏ quýt dà y có mó ng tay nhọ n
