CHAPTER 2
2.1 Brief Introduction of the Industry
The travel and tourism industry is one of the world's largest and fastest growing. Tourism
is an activity that civilization has engaged in in some form or another for a very long
time. However, tourism has only recently been recognized as a significant social and
economic phenomenon. Its effects are increasingly being felt, both at the individual and
societal levels.

It includes travel agencies, airlines, hotels, car rentals, cruise lines, tour operators, local
attractions, motor coach companies, railroads, and many other specialized endeavors.
Tourism is defined as travel for recreation, leisure, or business. Tourists are people who
"travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for leisure, business, or other
purposes for no more than one consecutive year," according to the World Tourism
Organization. Tourism has evolved from a privileged few pursuits to a mass movement of
people with the "urge to discover the unknown, to explore new and strange places, to
seek change in environment, and to undergo new experiences." Tourism is associated
with travel, and tourism has a naturally human character. Tourism as a business
perspective has been developed by Thomas Cook in 1980‟s.

Travel is becoming more efficient and convenient as a result of advancements in various

tourism components such as airlines, hotels, trains, ships, cruises, and many more. The
use of skies, in particular, has grown in popularity recently. That means that the trend of
air travel is growing by the day. The advancement of aircrafts and airline services such as
onboard service, check-in service, and ticketing services with fast, dependable, safe, and
secure travel are major draws for travelers. As a result, it has become the most important
aspect of tourism and efficient travel around the world. The use of air travel has made
travel easier and smoother in terms of speed, safety, security, and trustworthiness.
A travel agency is a confidential seller/public service that presents tourism-related
services to the public on behalf of dealers such as hotels, package tours, railways, car
rentals, airlines, sea ways, and airlines. In addition to dealing with regular tourists, the
majority of agencies have a separate department dedicated to making travel arrangements
for commercial travelers, and a number of travel agencies specialize in commercial travel
only. There are also travel agencies that act as general sales agents for foreign businesses,
allowing them to open branches in regions and countries other than where their
headquarters are located.
