Physics Project Form 5: Name:Meena Rubini Thoppasamy Class:5 SN 1

This project investigates how paper airplanes are able to lift using Bernoulli's principle and Newton's third law of motion. Bernoulli's principle states that the air moving faster over the top of the wing has lower pressure, creating lift. Newton's third law explains that the air pushing against the wings causes an equal reaction force lifting the wings. The student designed and tested different paper airplanes, measuring flight times. Modifications like wider wings and adjusting the center of gravity were tested to improve lift and stability.

INTRODUCTION

Bernoulli's principle is about fluid dynamic. A fluid with slow speed will exert more pressure than
fluid. If the speed of the air above the paper airplane is faster than the air move bellow the
airplane, the pressure will lower at the top of the airplane.
Newton’s third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Newton
third law of motion is a force push or a pull that acts upon an object as a results of its interaction
with another object. For example the force result from mutual interaction, the air pushing the
paper airplane move forward.
THEORY
The air passing through above and below the wing of paper
airplane are at the different speed. The air passing through will
reached the same endpoint at the same time.
Then, the air flowing above the wing moves at curve and
below the wing moves in a straighter line, thus the speed of the
air above the wing is faster than speed at the below and the
pressure at the above of the wing is bigger than below of the
wing.
Since high pressure always moves toward low pressure, the
air below the wing pushes upward toward the air above the
wing.
THEORY
When you throwing the paper airplane it generate initial thrust which
send the paper airplane forward.Drag acts in the opposite direction from
thrust.Thrust must be equal to or greater than drag for a plane to move
forward, hence your paper airplane slows down as the energy from the
initial thrust is used up. Gravity is the force pulling the plane downwards. It
acts on the mass of the plane, giving it weight.

Lift is the force that pushes the airplane up, acting in the opposite
direction of gravity. Lift is produced by the wings and the air flowing
around them. The tilt of the airplane and the angle of the wing means that
air flowing off the wing flows downwards. This downwards force pushes
back up against the wings and lifts the wings.

Modification
A wider wing
- wider wings can provide more lift

Move the center of the gravity forward

- it will made the lift area that behind the gravity
center
bigger. It can increase the speed because there is
lesser friction.

Bend the tail of the paper airplane upward

-it can balance the gravity center that going
downward.
