“Sa Aking Mga Kabata”
“Sa Aking Mga Kabata” was a poem that is said written by Jose Rizal which is about loving your
own native language. The tesis masterado of Dr. Nancy Kimuell Gabriel titled “Timawa:
Kasaysayan at Kabuluhan sa Lipunang Pilipino,” on UP Diliman, 2001; states that the poem “Sa
Aking Mga Kabata” that is said written by Rizal shows falseness. Then the historian Ambeth
Ocampo, Virgilo S. Amario which is a writer and a National Artist of the Philippines, and many
more exposed that the authorship of the poem has falseness in it. According to them that there is
no original copy of the poem where Rizal wrote it himself. Another is the poem was written in
1869 and at that time Rizal was only 8 years old. That’s where things get suspicious because the
poem shows mature insight that even a talented 8 years old can’t write. Another thing that they
debunked is the date and place of publication of the poem. The poem was published a decade
after Rizal’s death in the book of Hermegildo Cruz. He has plenty of time all his life to claim
authorship of the poem, but he did not. Another falseness is the textual errors in the poem. In
times of childhood of Rizal, they used letter “c” to spell words rather than with letter “k” while
in poem they used the word “kalayaan.” The last thing that is debunked is the meaning of words
used. The word “kalayaan” was used twice in the poem while Rizal did not know that word until
he was 25 years old, and at that time they use timawa/catimaoan as meaning of free/freedom.
Based on the things that are debunked I agree with Dr. Nancy that the poem shows falseness. No
matter how intelligent 8 years old can become, he will not be mature enough that he will be able
to write the line “stinky fish”. Maturity is a thing you get as you grow older, and Rizal only live a
span of 8 year when they said he wrote the poem. Also, he has 35 years to published it himself
and claim authorship but why did he not, we need a good reason for that. Another thing is the “c”
and “k,” how can a Rizal spell a word wrong not even once but twice. In the first place how can
he used “k” if they do not used it at all. Lastly and I think the strongest claim is the used of
“Kalayaan,” no matter how intelligent Rizal is he cannot use a word that he does not even know.
What’s more, there is irrefutable evidence that he does not know the word. That is why I believe
that the poem “Sa Aking Mga Kabata” have falseness in it.
