Lesson 1 - Activity Sheet

The document analyzes the credibility of Antonio Pigafetta's account of Ferdinand Magellan's voyage and the controversy over the site of the first Catholic mass in the Philippines. It discusses how Pigafetta's detailed account, as the only surviving record of the event, helped the author understand the controversy. The author agrees that the mass likely occurred in Limasawa Island based on evidence from Pigafetta's writings and a pamphlet examining both sides of the debate, which cites Pigafetta as well as other historical records that support Limasawa as the site over Butuan City. The author plans to write a position paper arguing that the mass took place in Limasawa Island based on related information and evidence.

ANALYSIS
● Give a concise explanation on the following items (page 2-13):

1. How credible is Pigafetta’s account?

Pigafetta’s account is very credible, as it is the “most detailed and only surviving account” of
this critical event in Philippine history. Pigafetta’s account was one of the most cited
documents by historians who wished to study the precolonial Philippines. His account had a
great contribution in the Philippine history, especially to the Site of the fist catholic mass in
the Philippines

2. How did Pigafetta’s account helped you understand the controversy of the site of the first
catholic mass in the Philippines?

Pigafetta’s account helpes me understand the controversy of the site of the first catholic
mass in the Philippines through reading some information on his accont, finding evidences
on where the first mass in the Phillippines really happened. And also with the help of our
great Readings in the Philippines history teacher, I understand more better and clearly
about the controversy of the site of the first Catholic mass in the Philippines

APPLICATION
● Read the pamphlet written by Miguel A. Benard (2002) which examines and
reassess the evidence for the two claims on the controversy on the site of the first
Catholic mass in the Philippines. After reading, ans wer the following questions
that are being raised.

NOTE: You must cite the information in the pamphlet as you answer the questions.

1. How did the pamphlet help you understand the controversy on the first Catholic
Mass in the Philippines? Answer briefly. 10 points
The pamphlet helps me better understand the controversy on the first Catholic
Mass in the Philippines because Migueal A. Bernard's pamphlet focuses on the
writings of Antonio Pigafetta for the basis of evidences. His pamphlet shows
where Ferdinand Magellan went during their voyage, which is one of the clues so
that we can better understand this controversy, or where the first Catholic Mass in
the Philippines happened. His pamphlet also shows many pieces of evidence like
Pigafetta’s Routes, Maps and etc. So that I can say that his pamphlet helps me to
understand better about this controversy.

2. Which side did you mostly agree on, and why did you agree? Give a brief answer.
10 points
The side that I mostly agree on is in Limasawa Island, I believe that the First
holy mass was celebrated or happened in Limasawa Island because there are
many evidences that shows that the first mass was really happened in
Limasawa Island. This evidences are The evidence of Albo’s Log-Book, The
evidence of Pigafetta, Summary of the evidence of Albo and Pigafetta and
Confirmatory evidence from the Legazpi expedition. In Miguel A. Bernard
pamphlets also stated that in Pigaffeta’s account, a crucial aspect of Butuan
was not mentioned- the river which is this one makes me more convinced
that the first Catholic mass was really happened in Limasawa Island.

Introduction

In this debate on where In this debate on where the First Catholic mass really
happened,I choose and stand with Limasawa Island. The introduction of
Christianity on Philippine shores is generally linked to the celebration of the first
Holy Mass. But for the past centuries, innumerable numbers of Filipinos including
the top experts in education, history, religion, politics and other subjects are still
debating as to where the exact location of the 'First Mass' on Easter Sunday
where both Butuan City and Limasawa claim to be the venue of this historical
religious rite. Countless people pursue the historic truth regarding the topic on
the birth of Christianity in the Philippines based on honesty,
independent-mindedness, critical truth and truth were only wherever the search
leads and whatever it’s finding. And to that, we strongly believe that the first ever
Christian Mass in the country on March 31, 1521, was celebrated in the island of
Limasawa, South of Leyte and not in Butuan City, so declared the National
Historical Institute (NHI).

Body Paragraphs
I believe that the first Catholic mass in the Philippines was really celebrated or
happened in Limasawa Island. I stand to it because there was many evidences
from Antonio Pigaffetas account that claims or most likely claims that the first
mass was really happened in Limasawa Island. These evidences are The route
of Magellan's Expedition leads to graphical location of Limasawa, The position
and latitude of Mazaua correspond to the position and latitude of Limasawa,
Expedition from Mazaua to Cebu, The survivors of the expedition went to
Mindanao later, but after Magellan's death, and etc. There were also many
historians that proved that the first mass really happened or celebrated in
Limasawa Island. There was also line that got or caught my attention from father
Miguel A. Bernard account which is, According to Pigafetta’s account, a crucial
aspect of Butuan was not mentioned--- the river. This means that during
Magellan's Expedition they didn't go or arrive to the Butuan which is a hint that
the first Catholic mass in the Philippines was happened in Limasawa and not in
Butuan. These evidences makes me convinced that that First mass in the
Philippines was actually happened or celebrated in Limasawa Island.

Conclusion
In conclusion, I can say that the first Catholic mass was really happened or
celebrated in Limasawa Island because as we look to the evidences I write or
stated above we can see that the first Catholic mass was really happened or
most likely happened in Limasawa Island. But for me as a catholic, wherever that
first Catholic mass happened whether Butuan or Limasawa. It does not matter
because the important thing is how we value our religion and because of this
event we have Cristianity, Catholicism, and we have faith as a Christian. Though
it is still very important to know the conflicts and controversies in our studies of
the Philippine history.
