Production - Unit 6
Directing & Stage Management
OBJECTIVES
Students will learn about the role of the director and stage manager in the production process. Students will then take on the role of the director and
will create a production concept for a show of their choice. Students will then present their design concept to the class before their design concept in
their final project.

1. Students will be able to understand and identify the role of the Director and Stage Manager in a theatre production.
2. Students will be able to conceptualize a production design concept for a show or musical of their choice.
3. Students will understand the different jobs/roles of the stage manager in a theatrical production
4. Students will present their production design concept for the play/musical of their choice to the class.
MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Video: Directing for Theatre Dean Bryant & Sarah Goodes
2. Video: What is a Stage Manager, Anyway
3. Director’s Concept Powerpoint
4. Directing Homework Assignment
ASSESSMENT
1. Students will watch the Directing and Stage Management videos in class and will participate in a class discussion about each role.
2. Students will then choose a play or musical of their choice and will create a production concept for the show.
3. Students will have class time to complete their research and
ACTIVITY
Day One:
Students will watch the videos in class for Directing and Stage Management. Students will participate in a group discussion summarizing
the key elements of Directing and Stage Management. .
Day Two:
Students will have class time to research their play/musical and will begin to work on their production design concept.
Day Three:
Students complete their production design concept and will begin working on their final project for Production 1.
