The Difference Technology Makes
Can you imagine life without your devices? Probably not! Everything has changed since we got smartphones,
laptops, and wi-fi. Some people say it’s a bad thing. They say we spend too much time looking at our devices.
We don’t talk to each other enough. But is it all bad? I don’t think so!
My life is better because of technology. I have parents and grandparents who live in Ecuador, but I’ve lived in
the US since 2005. That means we don’t see each other very often – maybe only once a year. Then, one day, my
parents bought their first modern laptop. Since that day, they’ve learned to use video calling. It feels outdated to
call them on my phone these days. I just sit down at my computer, and there they are on my screen!
Social media is another thing I really like. Sometimes in the past, I’ve felt sad about my friends back home. I want
to know how they are and what they’re doing, but they’re far away and I can’t see them. Now, every time I look
on social media, I see pictures and news that my friends have posted, and they don’t seem so far away.
Apps are another thing I love about technology. I have a few instant messaging apps, and that means that my
friends are always just one little message away, wherever they are and wherever I am. It can be in school, at
home, at work, and even at the beach.
Some people say technology keeps us apart. I don’t agree – I think it brings us together!

3 According to the writer, some people think
technology is bad because
A they don’t understand how to use
technology.
B they don’t want to pay for new devices.
C they say it stops people from talking to
each other.
