Chapter 1
1.0 Introduction
What is the Planning process?
• This refers to the process whereby the company articulates its objectives, the courses of actions
it intends to take in order to achieve the objectives. This involves determining where the
company is now or its current position, and considering both external and internal environment
factors that may affect company’s aim in achieving its goals. It further encompasses empirical
evaluation techniques of assessing and examining the delineated courses of actions as to which
are most effective and most efficient in achieving the corporate objectives or goals.
• The company needs to assess its current status and position while considering its current
strengths and weaknesses. This is done while also considering external variables and
categorizing them as either opportunities or threats.
❖ What is Corporate Planning?
• This is a more formal, systematic and empirical process whereby the entity develops its
strategic plans, and are further delineated through its subunits’ operational plan, and project
plans. It can be viewed as the total approach by which the company plans involving all the levels
of management.
❖ What is Strategic Planning?
• This involves the process of coming up the direction the company intends to take to maximize
its future potential and market position.
• A strategy is a plan that incorporates its corporate objectives, systems, structure, standards,
skillsets, synergy, policies, procedures, and programs in an interconnected and integrative whole.
The plan organizes and allocates the organization’s scare resources in a more workable posture,
thereby assuring the achievement of its corporate goals by taking into account the future
opportunities and threats (external variables), and the current strength and weakness (internal
variables) of the company.
• A strategy is adopted while expecting the potential acts and responses of intelligent opposition.
• It spells out where the company intends to go and what it intends to accomplish.
• Various levels in company management are involved in the creation of the strategies and that
each unit or department in the company creates their own strategies that are constructive aligned
to the company-wide or corporate strategic plan.
• Under this the company sets up key performance indicators (KPIs)
• The strategic plan is clustered according to the functional areas of the business entity -
marketing strategies, operation strategies, production strategies, research strategies, financial
strategies, cost management strategies, etc.
In order, for business entities to thrive and maximize their strategic position and corporate
operations, a careful and efficient planning is mandatory. This would involve the drafting of both
long-term and short-term corporate goals which are eventually translated into financial goals.
The strategic planning are essential elements in strategically directing company operations. They
are viable channels by which control is accomplished and ultimately facilitate gauging company
performance and creating corrective interventions when necessary.

Chapter 2
2.0 Literature Review

2.1 Strategic Planning

 Strategic planning based on corporate practice is being put forward and used as an
approach to more effective communitywide public planning. This article critically
assesses the approach by comparing it to ideas common in the planning literature and by
interviewing practitioners exposed to exercises in corporate-style strategic planning in
their communities. We conclude that most of the ideas subsumed in this approach have
been a part of planning education for decades and that most practitioners trained as
planners view the approach as “old wine in new bottles.” Nevertheless, we argue that
planners should view the new popularity of corporate-style strategic planning as an
opportunity to revive interest in planning.
 While strategic planning is a key concept in management research, there has been little
consistency in its conceptualization or measurement. Our review of prior studies also
identifies reliability and validity, dimensionality, crude levels of measurement, and lack
of parsimony as additional problems associated with prior use of this variable. Such
problems substantially limit our ability to compare results across studies, or to make
appropriate normative recommendations. We address these concerns by developing and
validating a multiple indicator measure of strategic planning, using two independent
samples. Implications for future research are then discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons,

2.2 Corporate Planning

 Bedford A. Fubara study is an enquiry into corporate planning in Nigeria. The data was
collected from the corporate executives of 44 companies and the finding is that planning
is informal and is accompanied by annual budgets and extended budgeting extrapolated
for 5 years to agree with Nigeria's 5-year development plans. It is argued that corporate
planning should be futuristic, innovative and responsive to changes in the business
environment, and therefore is not the same as budgeting. Since the corporate plans of
companies in Nigeria appear to be in the minds of their corporate executives, it is the
author's opinion that such informal plans leave the companies vulnerable to the slightest
storm in the economy.
 The paper reports the major descriptive results of a study of corporate planning in 48
U.K. companies in the mid-1970s. Introduction of corporate planning clearly quickened
in the 1970s. The number of specialist corporate planners tended to be small and was
correlated with company size. Responsibilities of planners varied between operating
companies, divisions, and the corporate parent company. Corporate planners had widened
the scope of their plans since the late 1960s, made extensive use of written documents
and procedures, and often used a high number of sophisticated techniques for forecasting
and evaluation, but their use of documents and techniques was far from uncritical. The
extent of planning varied between types of companies.
