EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGIES
Lesson 1: Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
Note Taker

Almost everything around us has been influenced by

technology.

Online systems are then technologies that provide

services for people. Like FB, Google, and under
Google, we have Gmail, Google Drive, Google Meet,
etc. Online games are also online systems. Altogether they are what makes up what we call online
platforms.

Online Platforms and its Specific Purpose

“If you can program it, then it’s a platform. If you can’t, then it’s not.”
– Marc Andreessen

When Andreessen said that platforms are programmed, what he means is that
online platforms are developed or programmed for our convenience.
Task 3.

With the constant advancement in technology, people can now utilize internet to manage their bills
online. Use your researching skills in identifying how to pay your household’s MORESCO/CEPALCO bills
online. Provide the step by step procedure.

EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGIES
Lesson 1: Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
Note Taker

Activity 1. Guess the Word! (2 minutes)

Direction: Use the picture presented by the teacher as a hint to guess the words. The theme is online
systems, functions and platforms. It must be talking about the different use of ICT.

And based on our picture this use of ICT is for…

1. E C I N

A credit card, she must be online shopping that means the word has something to do with ICT in terms
of commerce – the selling world!
2. O M R E

3. E E A H

What we solved were different aspects of our society that information and communications technology
(ICT) has touched. As you can see, almost everything around you has been influenced by technology.
That includes:

ICT (Information and Communication Technology)

 Education, Telecommunications (Telecommunications refers to the exchange of information
by electronic and electrical means over a significant distance), Commerce (another word for
trade or business, and can mean simply the buying and selling of goods and services), Media
and Visual Arts, Design and Music, Health Services

I’m sure you are very much familiar with your best friend ICT even way back in your TLE subject. But
today we will try to compare and contrast the nuances of varied online platforms, site and content to
address situational challenges.

“If you can program it, then it’s a platform. If you can’t, then it’s not.” – Marc Andreessen
What do you think it means?

A platform is any raised surface on which people can stand.

For example, your school principal every time he or she
announces something, the elevated area that he or she stands
upon is called a platform. Meanwhile,

Online platforms are technologies designed to run online to

provide interactive online services.

When Andreessen said that platforms are programmed, what

he means is that online platforms are developed or
programmed for our convenience.

Convergence of technology has almost made everything possible online. Way back, in order to send a
message to someone, we can only do so by writing a letter and bringing it to the post office. The post
office will take care of delivering your letters which may get days or weeks before it gets to your
recipient.

But now user interaction has been made possible in this online platform. There are now a variety of
online system that allow us to instantly send a message to anyone online.

Online systems are then technologies that provide services for people. Like FB, Google, and under
Google, we have Gmail, Google Drive, Google Meet, etc. Online games are also online systems.
Altogether they are what makes up what we call online platforms.

Don’t be overwhelmed with online platforms, I’m sure you can relate when we start to enumerate its
categories.
 Social Media
Social Media is a type of online platform that enables web users to create, co-create, discuss, modify,
and exchange user-generated content. We’re familiar with that… FB, Instagram, Twitter right? Well,
that’s what we thought. Look there’s more! There are also types of social media. Let’s explore them
one by one!
o Social Networking – this by far is the most common since these are the sites that allows
you to connect with other people with the same interests or background, any site we use
to express or communicate like Facebook
o Bookmarking site – sites that allow you to store and manage links to various websites
and resources, the site is like a big website magazine where it features different stuff
from different websites and when you click it redirects you to the website reference like
pinterest
o Social news – sites that allow users to post their own news items or links to other news
sources, if the other one is a magazine, can we consider this as a newspaper? Absolutely
not because news from these websites are from common people like us that means that
anyone is allowed to publish their own news items ad that creates a thread where people
can comment and discuss about it; reddit
o Media sharing – this one is very familiar for people who likes taking pictures or watching
videos, examples of this are Instagram and Youtube, media sharing sites as the name
suggests are sites that primarily focus on uploading and sharing media content like
images, videos and even music or audio. Vloggers and travelers make some noise!
o Microblogging – sites that focus on short updates from the user like Twitter, and since
these are short updates it usually limits the user’s freedom to express to typically around
140 to 200 characters per update
o Blogs and forums – I’m pretty sure we’re familiar with the word vlog, but did you know
that vlog actually originated from the word video plus blog because blogs are websites
that allow users to post articles and contents, it serves as an outlet for some to write
about themselves- their experiences, work, passion, art and everything!

Which of the following websites mentioned do you use?

 Search engines
o Are websites that allows you to search internet content
o One of the powerful advantages of technology, imagine being able to search one single
topic over millions of books in a library
o This is what search engine des on the internet
o We will have another topic in the future that will further explain search engines
o For now, let’s enumerate examples that you may be familiar with
o Google, also holding the title as the best search engine
o Yahoo, which was used to be more known for its mail providing service
o We also have other search engines other than these big three… the next time you go to
the internet you can try some of the unfamiliar ones
 Communication services
o Are the ones responsible for you to have access to information online
o They usually are private and public companies in telecom, internet, cable, satellite and
manage service business
o Some of them could be the reason why we can connect to internet or send message
 Payment systems
o Shopping with just your credit card information is possible because of payment systems
o When you shop an item at the convenience of your home through online you will be
prompted to pay by inputting your card information
o Payment systems are the ones… that’s important because an access to your card means
an access to your money
o Payment systems examples other than your usual visa and mastercard credit cards
o provide the systems that process all the card transactions between merchants and
banks. They instead partner with financial institutions like banks
o that you can use online are paypal
o PayPal works for paying online, send and receive payments, anywhere in the world
securely
o Link your cards and bank account info in one place so that checkout’s a breeze.
o Now we even have digital wallets that allows us to store our money like a real wallet but
also serves as payment options on some online sites
 Advertising platforms
o Another branch of online platforms that business surely love is advertising platform
o Imagine yourself through a highway riding a jeep on the way to a mall, then you pass by
this great billboard with a pic of an energy drink
o it’s a hot and sunny day, the jeep is so full, your throat suddenly felt dry, the idea of a
cold drink becomes your craving
o then as you go through the highway you see another tarpaulin, a picture of your favorite
fast food chain
o you realized that your ride is starting to take too long because of heavy traffic, which
made you hungry
o then said to yourself, I’ll stop by that fast food later on my way home
o why do you keep seeing those products out in the open, because in the open, they are
public and as they are public they target individuals like yourself to give you a sense of
need about the product they are showing
o that is advertisement in real life
o since nobody owns the internet, the internet is also a public digital place like the
highway
o whenever you start your search engine, like a car engine, you are driving through the
internet
o especially nowadays that people spend a lot of time on the internet thus making it a
perfect opportunity for companies to market their brand
o this is where advertisement platforms comes to play
o placing an advertisement is never random, thus an advertiser knows best where and
when the advertisement should show
o that’s why sometimes whenever you browse a product on an online shop like shopee or
Lazada you later on see a random advertisement of the same product you were just
searching earlier
o you thought it was some kind of magic but now you know it’s the advertising platforms
work

To test your learnings of this lesson, let’s do this activity!
