Mobile Operating Systems
A mobile operating system is an operating system that helps to run other application software on
mobile devices. It is the same kind of software as the famous computer operating systems like
Linux and Windows, but now they are light and simple to some extent.
The operating systems found on smartphones include Symbian OS, iPhone OS, RIM's BlackBerry,
Windows Mobile, Palm WebOS, Android, and Maemo. Android, WebOS, and Maemo are all
derived from Linux. The iPhone OS originated from BSD and NeXTSTEP, which are related to
UNIX.
It combines the beauty of computer and hand use devices. It typically contains a cellular built-in
modem and SIM tray for telephony and internet connections.
A kernel is the core/heart of an OS. It contains all the functions and operations to manage the working
of OS.

Android OS
It is developed by Google and is one of the most popular operating systems today. It is a mobile
OS based on the Linux kernel and open-source software. The very first Android device was
launched in 2008. It is built in Java programming language. It uses Linux for its device drivers,
memory management, process management, and networking. It supports a wide variety of
connectivity such as GSM, Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G etc.

Apple iOS
It was developed by Apple Inc. and originally released in 2007 for iPhone and iPod touch. It is
based on the Mach kernel. Mac OS X has a primitive multitasking environment. It supports real
time behavior and a very secure operating system.
Windows Mobile OS
The developer of this OS is Microsoft. Window mobile is a series of proprietary and closed source
mobile operating system developed by Microsoft. It is designed for mobile devices and based on
Windows 32-bit. It runs on pocket PCs, Smartphones and portable media centers. It provides
ultimate interoperability. Features of computer based Windows OS and additional features for
mobile phones.
