COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course aims to train the students to develop basic conversational skills using a foreign
language - Mandarin.

OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE

To acquire another language is not only a skill that will be an added value to a person’s knowledge
but it also allows one to explore and appreciate another culture. While we are not native speakers
of Chinese, being in the Health industry will require us to face different nationalities and the
Chinese community is one of them. From the basic conversational skills and day-to-day
expressions and greetings this course can help you be familiar with the sounds and how words
are spoken and written to process future transactions related to your industry.

I hope that after completing Foreign Language, the basics, you will be more interested to learn
more further in and advanced conversational skills that will be an edge to you once you graduate.

Welcome to FL we will learn together, make mistakes, practice and more practice and most of all
enjoy a new language and culture.

COURSE OUTCOMES
At the end of this course, you should be able to:

1. Explain the importance of developing basic conversational skills in Mandarin for the
Health Industry.
2. Verbalize basic numeral skills in Mandarin in the Health Industry.
3. Verbalize basic greetings conversational skills in Mandarin.
4. Verbalize basic pronouns and action words
5. Demonstrate basic writing skills in Mandarin

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS FOR THE COURSE

There is no prerequisite subject for this course.

In all of the subjects, the following shall be present:

(1) Basic digital literacy skills required for studying such as being able to communicate through
email, FB messenger, and video call (these are especially for students with unstable or zero
connectivity at home). For students who have stable connectivity, one should know the basic skills
in downloading and uploading content material using Google Suite (Google docs, Google drive,
Google sheets). Students will need this as a basic tool when engaging with their teachers and
groupmates. Students also need to have basic skills in using Google Hangouts or Zoom as

Foreign Language 1 1
platforms to be used during real-time or synchronous sessions with their professors and
classmates. To facilitate the use of these tools, it would be advisable for students to create their
own gmail accounts.

(2) Good socialization skills are expected from the learners. As the teachers and students are away
from each other, students need to exert extra effort to establish and maintain quality
relationships through one’s communication skills, collaboration skills, initiative, critical thinking
skills, and the like.

(3) Writing skills. Patience when doing the writing drills is a must. You are not expected to have
perfect and well-written Chinese characters. Proper stroke matters and order is important in
writing Chinese characters.

For this printed modular class, we will have a synchronous session at least once a week during the
time indicated in your matriculation form. The day of this synchronous session will be determined
and announced on our first day of classes. This meeting will be conducted via zoom or google
meet for those with internet connectivity or via call for those who do not have internet
connectivity. Announcements will be posted in our class GC. Please tune in.

Our interaction through synchronous sessions would be approximately 1 hour out of 6 hours
required by the subject on a weekly basis. This means that in most parts of the required hours or
approximately 5 hours a week, you are on self-study mode. During this time, you are expected to
do your part as a diligent and responsible learner. Refer to this RED learning kit as a complete
guide on how to acquire the competencies and comply with the course requirements. Though we
have scheduled synchronous sessions, you can give me a ring or send a message in our class GC
for urgent concerns. I will try to respond within the day or in 24 hours.

Aside from our interaction and your interaction with the content, you are also encouraged to
interact with your peers or classmates in this course. There are requirements that need
collaboration with your classmates. May you enjoy this activity.

These are the scheduled major examinations. The place and time will be announced.
Prelim Exam: February 15-18, 2022
Midterm Exam: March 18-22, 2022
Semi-Final Exam: April 22-26, 2022

COURSE REQUIREMENTS & GRADING SYSTEM

The following are the forms of assessments that you have to complete and pass in this subject:
1. A. Oral Exercises

Foreign Language 1 5
Reading and oral exercises are basic in this course. Each student will be practicing on how
to say the Chinese words either individually or by pairs for conversational exercises.

B. Writing Worksheets

To complete the basic skills in acquiring another foreign language. It is important to also
be familiar with how the characters are written. From the basic strokes to the drills, one
can comfortably write and memorize the basic words in Chinese needed for daily
conversation and transactions.

C. Major Exam

There are two major exams, Midterm and Final Examination

2. Grading System:
This will be our Grading System. Take particular note of the components so that you can
strategize on how you can achieve a good final mark in this subject:

Midterm
80% Participation
Attendance/weekly log-in/consultation 10
Participation in formative assessment 10
Graded Projects/Activities/ Summative Assessment 60
20% Midterm Exam

Final
80% Participation
Attendance/weekly log-in/consultation 10
Participation in formative assessment 10
Graded Projects/Activities/Summative Assessment 60
20% Final Exam

Final Grade= (Midterm + Final)/2

Cut-off for every assessment to be marked 75% is 50%. This means that for a 10- item
assessment, you should get at least 5 correct answers to get a 75% mark.

MODE OF DELIVERY, COMMUNICATION SYSTEM, AND OTHER SUPPORT SYSTEMS

This RED Learning Kit is to be delivered on a printed modular modality. This is a modality that
students may choose if they are facing either zero internet connectivity at home or in unstable
internet connectivity. If you have chosen this modality you are in self-study mode. You are
expected to follow the study guide for this course. A minimum of 6 hours per week is required
for you to work for this course or a total of 54 hours in 9 weeks.

Foreign Language 1 6
You are expected to submit the requirements due to better navigation of the course. For writing
and presentation requirements, you are expected to avail of grammar and spelling checkers.

Consultation with your teacher should be at least once a week observing the class hours using
these channels.

FB messenger account – http://www.facebook.com/jotrinity03

Collaboration with group mates and classmates should be at least once a week at a schedule
agreed upon, through our Group Chat or through text messaging. Hence it is important that you
provide me with your FB messenger account and your cellphone number if possible.

On the other hand, if you chose the Flexi Tech modality, it means that your internet connectivity
at home is stable, and therefore you can make use of the Learning Management System,
Blackboard Learn (BB) for your learning activities at home. In this modality, you will have learning
sessions that will be done asynchronously, meaning, you will follow through the lessons,
instructions and activities using BB by connecting on-line. You can do this at your own pace and
time, preferably at the time that is prescribed in your schedule of classes to help you in managing
your time properly. You will also have synchronous classes with your teacher and classmates,
meaning, you will get to meet with them virtually by using platforms such as Zoom or Google
Hangouts. The schedules are provided in the class schedule. However, whenever there are
adjustments in the schedule of meetings because of certain exigencies, you will be informed about
it through a message in the Group Chat which we will create, or through text messaging.

This course will be run through the following modes:

For Cohort A, learners with stable internet connectivity, will proceed through the following
modes:
1. Asynchronous learning. It occurs through online channels without real-time interaction.
In this course UNC, asynchronous engagement is one where the learning activities will be
experienced through the use of a Learning Management System (LMS). You can access
these learning activities at any time and at your own pace. Though this happens at your
own pace, still, a certain time frame is provided for each activity.
2. Synchronous learning. Is an online that happens in real-time. In this course, the teacher-
learner mentoring, monitoring, and consultations happen in real-time through the use of
real-time platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, and Facebook messenger.

For Cohort B, with intermittent internet connectivity, will proceed through the following:
1. Asynchronous learning. It occurs through online channels without real-time interaction.
In this course UNC, asynchronous engagement is one where the learning activities will be
experienced still through the use of a Learning Management System (LMS). You can
access these learning activities at any time and at your own pace. *They can also be

Foreign Language 1 7
accessible when you download them offline just in case internet connectivity becomes
unstable. Though this happens at your own pace, still, a certain time frame is provided for
each activity.
2. Synchronous learning. Is an online that happens in real-time. In this course, the teacher-
learner mentoring, monitoring, and consultations happen in real-time through the use of
real-time platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, and facebook messenger.

For Cohort C, without internet connectivity

1. Asynchronous learning. It occurs through online channels without real-time interaction.
In this course UNC, asynchronous engagement is one where the learning activities will be
experienced through the use of printed modules. The modules will be delivered all at once
at the agreed drop-off point. This module already includes the course's topic and
discussion for the whole semester. This condition makes the learning activities accessible
at any time and at your own pace. Though this happens at your own pace, still, a certain
time frame is provided for each activity and will be submitted on the agreed drop-off
point.
2. Synchronous learning. In this course, the teacher-learner mentoring, monitoring, and
consultations happen in real-time through the use of SMS messaging and phone calls.

The following are factors that will contribute to the effective delivery of this module:
1. Self-directed learning. Follow the recommended Module for the module. Try to keep up
with the prescribed schedule. Minimize or avoid procrastination.
2. Constant communication. Communication channels with the teacher and peers will be
through various mediums: Messenger, Google meet, zoom, Google classroom, and UNC’s
LMS.
3. Planning and Evaluation. Plan your engagement with the module on using a calendar.
Analyze your learning strategies. Improve on our strong areas while improving your areas
of weakness

STUDENTS’ REQUIRED SKILLS IN A DISTANCE LEARNING MODE

Distance learning covering both flexible tech-driven and printed modular modalities may sound
so wonderful that some of you may start with an unrealistic vision. In reality, these learning
modalities require just as much, if not more, time, energy, motivation and discipline as traditional
classroom courses. So, you must possess specific skills and apply learning strategies to be
successful in these learning modalities.

To better equip you for distance learning, it is highly recommended that you take and complete a
Coursera course- MINDSHIFT: Break Through Obstacles to Learning and Discover Your Hidden
Potential. Mindshift teaches the essentials of online learning. It provides practical insights from
science and certain mental tools so you can learn and do more—far more—than you might have
ever dreamed!

You can avail this course as a free course, which means no certificate will be provided to you after
completion. However, the skills and learning strategies that you will gain are helpful in your
university journey.

Foreign Language 1 8
Aside from the Coursera course, we have the summary of skills and learning strategies that will
surely help you in this distance learning mode: I would like you to carefully read the list and apply
these in all your courses.

1. Persistence
Persistence is perhaps the biggest key to succeed in distance learning. This means that you
should have the willingness to tolerate technical problems, initiative to seek help when needed,
discipline to work daily on every class, and motivation to persist through challenges.

You should understand that you will run into challenges, but keep trying and ask for help. You
have to set up a manageable study schedule and stick to it. You are expected to log in and make
progress every day. Have that discipline, stick to your schedules even after the novelty of going to
distance learning starts to wear off! Keep going! Your daily little progress when sums up will be
surely of significant value at the end of this course.

2. Effective Time-Management Skills

Next, time management. You must be able to manage your time well. This flexibility is one of the
great benefits of distance learning. But, it can also be a drawback if you procrastinate, unable to
stick to a routine study schedule, or is not able to complete assignments without daily reminders
from your teacher.
Effective time-management skills don't just happen. You have to learn this by practice. Once you
do, you will benefit from it throughout your life. So, follow the tips below to develop yours:

● You are encouraged to review the syllabus for each of the courses. You must develop a
comprehensive plan for completing the course requirements and assessments.
● Make a daily "To Do" list. And have fun checking things off the list as you complete them.

It takes time to develop good habits. But, at the end, you will surely gain satisfaction from being
well-organized and in accomplishing your tasks.

3. Effective and Appropriate Communication Skills

Another is about communication. This skill is vital in distance learning because you must seek
help when you need it. We, your teachers are willing to help you, but we are unable to pick up on
non-verbal cues, such as a look of confusion on your face. You are advised to follow these tips:

● Use the tools provided by your courses as channels for communication. Our school and
your program provide several ways for us to communicate. These might include e-mail,
discussion groups, chat room office hours, cell phones, and even text messaging. We want
to help you to succeed in your classes and will surely answer your questions.

You may feel awkward to talk with your teachers this way, but these channels aim to
bridge the communication gaps in distance learning. So, go ahead and see the channels
specified in this course.

● Use appropriate style and language for school. When communicating with your teachers
and other staff, you should write in full, grammatically correct sentences and with a
respectful tone. While many of you are used to a very informal style of writing in chat

Foreign Language 1 9
rooms, blogs, text messages, and so forth, for academic training in UNC along English
Immersive Environment (EIE), you are encouraged to be mindful of your language and
sentence construction.

Because of the distance, it's tempting for some of you to say things out of anger or frustration
that you would never say to your teacher in person. We, your teachers in distance learning are
both professionals and persons. We expect to be treated with respect and courtesy in the same
way that you do in a physical classroom; and with persons whom you encounter every day like
your family.

Let us always remember the UNC Core Value: We Respect Each Other and Work as a Team.

4. Basic Technical Skills

The fourth skill is about technology. You as learners need basic technical skills to succeed. These
include your ability to create new documents, use a word processing program, navigate the
internet and the learning management system, and download software and files. We will have an
orientation on how to use the learning management system and other online tools.

If you lack basic computer skills, we are encouraging you to find an online tutorial and learn from
there. You may also want to check the UNC’s main website for its hardware and software
requirements to see the compatibility of your gadgets

5. Reading and Writing Skills

Another is about reading and writing as the main ways to communicate in distance learning
modality. Although some hard copies of textbooks might be required, you should be comfortable
reading a lot of documents on a computer screen and able to type.

Though some tests and quizzes have multiple choice questions, many of your assignments will
involve writing short or long answers. So appreciate these learning activities to improve your
writing skills.

6. Motivation and Independence

The sixth skills are about motivation and independence. To be successful, you must want to
succeed. Distance learning requires independence, internal motivation, responsibility, and a
certain level of maturity.

Kindly reflect on these questions:

What are your reasons for attending school?
Are you determined and self-motivated to succeed in school?

Your answers are worthwhile reasons to work hard in school. In the future, it will give you a
greater level of personal satisfaction with your career. Perhaps it would be simply a personal
pride in your accomplishments.

7. A Good Study Environment

The last but not the least is having a good study environment. This is a critical factor in distance
learning. Refer to the helpful tips below:

Foreign Language 1 10
● Get some peace. You will need a quiet place to work without distractions from things like
television, family, or roommates.
● Avoid games. Consider uninstalling any computer games to avoid temptation. Or keep
the games on a different computer in the house.
● Turn off mobile phone devices. Let your friends and family members know the hours that
you will be "at" school.
● Beware surfing the black hole of the Internet. It is easy to lose track of the time as you
wander from site to site.
● Consider ergonomics. Adjust the height of your chair, keyboard, and screen so that you
will be comfortable. Forearms and thighs should be level and parallel to the floor. Wrists
should not be bent while typing.
● Set up good lighting and comfortable seating. Lighting in the room should be at least as
bright as the computer screen to avoid eye strain.

Go back to the above list from time to time to be reminded of helpful tips to succeed in distance
learning or probably in life in general.

HONOR CODE

We uphold the UNC Core Values and this is our commitment concerning academic integrity.

I am an advocate of academic integrity. I commit to be transparent in acknowledging the work of

others. I commit not to cheat on exams, plagiarize or misrepresent the ideas of someone else as

SUMMARY
The initial sounds are the sounds that you will produce / hear at the beginning per character while
the final sounds are usually the sounds that you will produce /hear at the end of each character.
Some final sounds are considered the vowel sounds I English and will sound in the middle of the
Chinese character.

The four basic tones will make conversation in Chinese sound like we are natives of the language.
Given the zero knowledge of the language, you are not expected to be able to perfect the tone
and intonation, but a lot of reading practices along the way in this course will surely help you in
being familiar with the tone.

introduce oneself to others and to get to know others too. Basic nationalities can also come in
handy when trying to know the origin of guests and clients.

Notice how Naga City is read in Chinese? The English sound of the words Naga is likened to the
way it is read in Chinese. For nationality, 人 (rén) is added to the country name in Chinese.

MODULE 6: TELLING TIME AND DATES

INTRODUCTION
From having the basic knowledge about numbers, it will be easier to associate the numbers with
the time, days, weeks and months.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this module, you should be able to
1. Familiarize and identify days and months in Chinese
2. Verbalize and write how to express dates and birthdays in Chinese.
3. Say your age and ask someone’s age.
4. Tell time in Chinese

The characters of the days of the weeks and months have characters common to all. The

For months, they also have the same second character which is

In one month, the moon undergoes different phases. Hence i月(yuè), is used to represent a
month.

Learning Activity 6.1

1. Practice saying the months in Chinese, watch the video at https://youtu.be/QVOB45n1BIE

In telling a date, it starts with the following format, YEAR, MONTH, DAY. For example
when we say it in English, we say June 12, 2020, In Chinese, it should be written in the
following order 2020 June 12. Zero (0) in Chinese is represented by 零 (líng), year is 年

(nián), month is 月(yuè) and day is 日(rì). Now write and say二零二零年 (èr líng

1. Ask others “How old are you?” in Chinese. Watch video at

https://chinesefor.us/lessons/ask-say-age-in-chinese-how-old-are-you/ or
https://youtu.be/36toRDvepXg

There are two ways to ask someone’s age in Chinese. First is when you are asking someone
younger than you, usually less than 16 and another way is when you are asking someone older
than you, usually to more than 16 years old.

To ask a younger person how old is he/she, say 你几岁? (nǐ jǐ suì). To ask someone
older than you, say: 你多大? ( nǐ duō dà?). Answer by saying, I am thirty-five years
(35) old. In Chinese, say 我 三十五 岁 (wǒ sān shí wǔ suì).

MODULE 7: PRONOUNS

INTRODUCTION
Often when we are talking with acquaintances and guests, we do not know their names yet. In
order to express and substitute proper names with pronouns, there is a must to learn it in Chinese
as well.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. Familiarize and verbalize personal pronouns.
2. Convert singular pronouns to plural form in Chinese.
3. Convert personal pronouns to possessive pronouns
4. Write down personal pronouns.

In creating simple sentences, personal pronouns like I, you, he, she etc are needed in order to
substitute the proper names. In Chinese, it is very easy to distinguish a singular and plural form of
personal pronouns by just adding one character.

Vocabulary 7: Personal Pronouns

Learning Activity 7.1

1. Watch and verbalize the personal pronouns video at https://youtu.be/Myb8WMYK7uk

他 (tā) and 她 (tā) he/him and she/her both sound the same when pronounced. They
only have a differentiator in terms of the first symbol of the character wherein it
denotes male and female. In order to make the singular personal pronouns, just add one
character which is 們men. 你們 (nǐ men) or “You” in plural form may denote a
sentence like for example when talking to a crowd or a group of people.

Learning Activity 7.2

1. Watch and verbalize the personal pronouns in plural form video at

https://youtu.be/Myb8WMYK7uk start at 1:33 minutes

Possessive Pronouns

The word 的 (de) doesn’t have any real meaning and it should be attached to another
word. Like for the personal pronouns, if the word 的 (de) is added it, it becomes a
possessive pronoun. The usual format now becomes Pronoun + 的 (de), like 我們的
(wǒ men de) or “my”. In a sentence where you will add a noun after the personal
pronoun, like for example “This is my Book,” it is now said as 这是我的書 (Zhè shì
wǒ de shū) 这 (Zhè) This, 是 (shì) is, 我的 (wǒ de) my, 書 (shū) book. Another way
of expressing it is “The book is mine”. It is now written as 書是我的 (shū shì wǒ de
shū), 書(shū) book, 是(shì) is, 我的 (wǒ de) mine. This time, 我的 (wǒ de) is used
as “mine” and not “my”.
