INTRODUCTION

Indian society is very old and surviving with many ups and downs and
social issue. But with advent of industrialization, urbanization and
various other changes, the whole system is slowly being replaced by
new ideologies.
So, Modernization is a social process towards various social
changes.
MEANING

Modernization symbolizes the advancement. Advancement


simply means betterment and to move forward in a
positive sense. It does not denote any philosophy or
movement but it only symbolizes a process of change.
It simply follows to move forward and to get better in terms of
many aspects of life like living standards, working styles,
behavioral patterns (values, morals and principles),
technology, education, relationship, educational
pattern.
WHEN A SOCIETY IS SAID TO BE
MODERNIZED?

When the people of the society get better and advanced in all aspects
related to their lives, institutions, thinking attitude and relationships then
the society is said to be modernized.
In modernization society tries to innovate and utilize its present and old
knowledge, patterns, techniques and resources.
It makes a society more confident, independent, versatile and moreover
self sufficient.
Modernization make society realize its uniqueness that can be made
better and advanced than before.
MODERNIZATION

Modernization was early only used to refer change in economy and


its related effect on social values and practices. Modernization can
also be described as "social change involving the elements of
science and technology".
The scientific and technological innovation have brought about
remarkable changes in the whole system of social relationship and
installed new ideologies in the place of traditional ones.

change whereby less developed societies acquire the

modernization possible :

➢Ideology based on Nationalism
➢Charismatic Leadership
➢Coercive Government Authority
CAUSES OF MODERNIZATION

1. Education: Higher education in the fields of science and technology provide


the basis of modernization. As education creates skills, attitudes essential for
technological innovation. It focus on what people can do and what they can aspire
and hope to get Le, increase modern skills and attitude.

2. Mass Communication: Development of mass communication like newspaper,


magazines, TV, radio, telephone, movies etc. are important means of spreading
modern ideas at a faster rate. Mass media bring new information, attitude,
aspirations to the large masses in society which lead them to new achievement.
CAUSES OF MODERNIZATION

3. Ideology based on Nationalism: Nationalism and Democracy are


very much linked with Modernization. Nationalism is connected with
national awareness and political consensus. It helped political elite in
changing the behavior of mass of people.
4. Charismatic Leadership: A charismatic leader is in a better position
to impress upon the people to adopt modem beliefs, values, practices and
behavior pattern. But the danger involved here is that this popular
advantage may take undue advantage for his personal glorification.

5. Coercive Government Authority: A strong and stable


government may adopt coercive measures to compel people to
accept modern values and ways of life.

THE ROLE OF EDUCATION IN
MODERNIZATION

Modernization is a process of social transformation from traditional society


to well advanced society based on science and technology.
Education is a social process, which prepares individuals to lead a
meaningful and dignified life. Education and modernization are closely
linked.
Education prepare the necessary manpower, skilled personnel to occupy
different position in life who would contribute for the growth of national
wealth.

According to Education commission of India, Education is


the main instrument of modernization. It can bring about
changes in nations socio-cultural, economic, technological
and industrial fields.

1.Education inculcated necessary qualities in the individual so as to make


modern person.
2. Education helps in improving quality of people and developing socio-
economic equalities among the society.
3. Education increases productive skills of individual and in turn results in
development of the society and build up of nation.
4. It increases the use of science and technology in different field of life.
5. It inculcates right spiritual and moral values which necessary for
modernization.

IMPACT OF MODERNIZATION

• Occupation become more skilled and specialized.


• No. of people engaged in primary occupation reduces while
that in secondary and tertiary sector increases.
• Barter system replaced by money system.
• Geographical distances reduced, old agriculture tools replaced
by new advanced tools.
• Improved health care facilities, education facilities etc.

• Introduction of new value systems such as equality, justice
,individualism, Secularism etc.

• It develops the quality of leadership among the people.

DISADVANTAGES OF MODERNIZATION

1. Modernization leads to more industrialization due to which the problem of


pollution is increasing day by day.
2. It leads to urbanization which is directly affecting our village culture and
the agriculture
3. People are moving towards the glamorous life.
4. Western culture is increasing in our society which is dangerous for the
preservation of our own culture.
5. People are becoming more materialistic
6. Degradation of Moral Values
7. A spiritual nature of the human being is diminishing.
CONCLUSION

We can conclude from the above results that the society is going under transition and is
becoming modernized because the normative structure, cultural traits, value system, dress
patterns, and family system have all been strongly affected and altered due to the modern
world.
Because it is a Revolutionary changes leading to transformation of a traditional society or pre-
modern society into an advanced economically prosperous and relatively.
The technological advancement has fed people with new culture traits, diffusing alien features
into the societies. Traditional and cultural traits are considered a sign of recognition and
identity of any nation and this very core has been permanently replaced by the western world.
So there is a dire need to save and preserve our cultural identity. The researchers and social
scientists should play their role in this concern to save their identity.
