ASSET: CHRONICLE
In the language of the Elder Things (requiring Mathematics 50%+ and Cryptography 25%+ to translate,
only on a critical roll of Mathematics or Cryptography can another roll at -20% be made to unlock the
other, secret information hidden in the book). Base Translation (Study Time months): Unnatural +4%,
SAN loss 1/1D6. Full Translation (Study Times years): Unnatural +12%, SAN loss 2D10.

An ancient, oversized "book" of stone, metal and strange, chitinous material recovered by P4 in 1931, and
held in possession of first P4, then Delta Green, then MAJESTIC and later the Program: this work contains
a summary of Elder Things operations on Earth and insight into their math and science, millions of years in
advance of humanity.
The Chronicle is believed to have been authored by the Elder Things themselves. It recounts their
journeys across time/space, their experiments with creating life, and their interactions with other ancient
and incomprehensible beings in Earthly pre-history. But due to the nature of the Elder Thing's language,
humans have only translated the most ephemeral level of information encoded in the book.
This ancient manuscript, written in the alien tongue of the Elder Things (designated quinque litterae
linguae, the "five letter language" because all words contained five letters) requires significant mathematic
and cryptographic skill to even attempt to decipher and read. Even then, most of its secrets remain below
the suface, hidden in a strange five-axis math which allows it to be read in multiple directions at once.
The accepted translation made by Dr. Alvin Courtney of the Dyer Desk in the 1935 translates only one
of the five levels of information, failing to reveal much more than a timeline for the beings. No other
researcher has thought to look deeper, and, after some experiments were attempted using Elder Thing
"science" in the 1940s and little headway was made, the book was abandoned as a known quantity.
The manuscript is a strange contraption of durable metallic tines that extrude and retract as the "book"
is "paged" through, locking into place in a strange mechanical dance, bound together with an unknown
chitinous material, sandwiched within thin layers of porous green stone that conceal eons old mechanics
that never seem to degrade or cease working. The alien text is inscribed with precision, accompanied by
intricate diagrams and images of celestial bodies, organisms, and otherworldly machinery that appear when
the "book" is moved properly. It appears a linear code until the math within it is understood (then it
becomes clear that every page an diagram may be read five different ways, revealing otherwise invisible
secrets).
The deeper undiscovered levels of the Chronicle detail the Elder Things' mastery over life, matter, and
energy, and their understanding of the cosmos' deepest secrets, along with the ultimate secret of Earth: all of
earthly life was accidentally created by the Elder Things after their slaves — the Shoggoths — ran wild...
The ultimate secret, the knowledge of the timeless beings that humans sometimes refer to as Great Old
Ones, is examined here with a cold and scientific eye. Such truths are difficult for the human mind to
harbour.

This ritual, a potent unnatural technique employed by the Elder Things, enables the displacement of a
portion of time/space into a neighboring pocket dimension through strange math. It demands an intricate
comprehension of reality's underlying principles, knowledge that is rarely wielded by humans and has a
permanent detrimental effect on the relatively weak human mind. It is with this process that the Elder Thing
survivors awoken by the Pabodie expedition moved the "Mountains of Madness" into an adjacent, secret
dimension where they remain hidden even today, unobserved.
The ritual commences with the preparation of a site, typically a geometric pattern of stones arranged in
a spiral formation near the desired displacement location. This formation must be imbued with an array of
elaborate symbols. The arrangement and size of the site directly impact the extent and scale of the
attempted time/space displacement as well as the INT of the operator. For entities with an INT below 18,
the affected area is restricted to approximately 100 meters by 100 meters. For those beings with higher INT,
much larger areas of effect are possible.
Upon completion of the site, the practitioner enters a meditative trance, focusing their mental energy on
the target time/space they wish to displace. This process is extremely taxing, necessitating the expenditure of
Willpower Points and Sanity Points throughout the ritual. The displacement is a fragile equilibrium of
power and precision; the practitioner must maintain concentration to avoid disastrous consequences.
With a successful activation roll, the practitioner loses the required POW, and the displacement transpires
causing the selected area to vanish from observable space/time. Any operator with an INT below 20
permanently loses 1 INT per successful activation (on a critical failure, they lose 1D20 INT). If the
operator's INT falls below 4, they drop to 0 HP and die of a horrifying stroke.
Within the successfully activated veil, reality proceeds undisturbed, separate and concealed from Earth,
existing yet hidden from standard time/space. Those within the veil during transit remain there indefinitely
and cannot exit until the practitioner perishes or drops the veil. Conventional means are ineffective for those
attempting to locate places or people hidden within the veil.
If the activation roll fails, the WP, POW and SAN are lost, but no transition occurs.
