Survey Applications
Two types of field surveys
This version of the Trimble Digital Fieldbook software supports two different types of field surveys:
• FastStatic survey
• Postprocessed Kinematic (PPK) survey
Both of these survey types use postprocessed GPS survey techniques. This means that accurate
coordinates, for surveyed points, are not available during the field survey. To generate baselines and
accurate coordinates, all survey data collected in the field must be postprocessed using Trimble office
software.
The choice of survey technique will depend on the accuracy requirements for the survey project.
FastStatic Surveys
The FastStatic technique is generally used for survey control applications, or for applications requiring
the highest accuracy. This method requires longer occupation times at each point to be surveyed, but
provides more accurate results.
www.trimble.com Page 3
Project Workflow
Plan the Survey
An important part of planning for a field survey is the decision regarding the type of field survey to
perform. When choosing between the FastStatic or Postprocessed Kinematic (PPK) field survey, you
must consider the type of survey application, and the accuracy requirements.
The Trimble Digital Fieldbook software may be configured to perform a variety of different field
surveys, including FastStatic and Post Processed Kinematic (PPK) surveys. To ensure that the software is
correctly configured for a particular task, please see the section on Survey Styles in this document.
Trimble Digital Fieldbook uses job files to manage project data. Before you start a field survey, you must
either create a new job file or select from a list of existing job files.
Raw GPS data is stored in DAT files on the data collector. The DAT files are associated with the
appropriate job file. When a job file is transferred to the office software, the associated DAT files are
also automatically transferred. To avoid repeatedly downloading the same field data, Trimble
recommends that a new job file be used for each field visit.
Depending on the survey application, the user will perform either a FastStatic or Postprocessed
Kinematic (PPK) field survey to collect data at all points to be measured in the field survey.
When the field survey is completed, you must download all data collected, using the Trimble Digital
Fieldbook software, to the office computer. The data from the base station receiver, as well as the data
from all roving receivers must be downloaded, and postprocessed, using Trimble office software.
Trimble recommends that that you download all job files at the end of each field day.
To provide coordinates for the points measured during the field survey, the field data must be processed
using Trimble office software. The procedure for office processing is not included as part of this
document. For a detailed explanation of this procedure, refer to the software tutorial in the Trimble
Business Center software.

Configuring the Data Collection Software
What is a Trimble A Trimble survey style is a set of parameters that defines a mode of operation
Survey Style? for the GPS system. The active survey style will control the behavior of the
GPS system.
The survey style parameters include:
• Survey type – FastStatic or Postprocessed Kinematic (PPK)
• Logging device – Controller or GPS receiver
• Logging interval – data measurement rate – in seconds
• Elevations mask – mask angle for satellite measurements
• PDOP mask – mask value for PDOP warnings
• GPS antenna type – type of GPS antenna
• GPS antenna height – default antenna height measurement
How is it used? Each time you begin a survey operation in Trimble Digital Fieldbook software,
you must select the appropriate survey style for that type of operation. This is
illustrated, in this document, in the sections on FastStatic and PPK surveys.
Types of Survey This document describes two different survey styles, used for two distinctly
Styles different types of survey applications.
• FastStatic surveying applications – used mostly for setting control points, or
measuring points that require a high level of accuracy.
• Postprocessed Kinematic (PPK) surveying applications – used for
topographic surveying where a high level of production is required.
Default Survey Styles The Trimble Digital Fieldbook software contains default survey styles for
FastStatic and PPK survey applications. These survey styles may be used “as
is” or they may be edited to suit your requirements.
User Defined Survey You may also create a number of customized survey styles to perform different
Styles survey tasks. These survey styles can be tailored specifically for your
requirements.

Managing Jobs
Job Files Job files are used to store coordinates, and information, about measured points.
The job file also contains links to any data files containing raw satellite
observations. In addition, the job properties are used to control the parameters
for each individual job or project.
Using Job Files In most instances, you should create a new job file for each project, or each
time that you go to the field to collect data in a project.
Measured GPS data is stored in DAT files that are linked to the appropriate job
file. When the job file is transferred to the Trimble field software, the
associated DAT files are also automatically transferred. To avoid repeatedly
transferring the same field data, Trimble recommends that you transfer and
back up the job file at the end of each field day, then create a new job file at
the beginning of the next field session.
In addition, coordinates may also be uploaded to a job file, and used for
navigating to existing control points.

Performing a FastStatic Survey
Application
FastStatic surveys can be conducted using two distinctly different field methods. These are the network
style survey, and the radial style survey.
• In a network style survey, several GPS receivers are employed in each measuring session. Each GPS
receiver is treated as an individual base station, and all receivers must collect GPS data
simultaneously, throughout the session. The object of this survey is to compute baselines (connections)
between each of the GPS receivers.
• In a radial style survey, one (or several) GPS receivers are operated as base stations, while one (or
several) GPS receivers are operated as rover units. The GPS base stations must be operated
continuously throughout the duration of the field survey. The rover units only collect data while they
occupy the points to be surveyed. Rover data is not collected while in motion between the surveyed
points.
The following example will illustrate the workflow for the radial style of survey.
Workflow
The steps required to perform the FastStatic survey are as follows:
• Start the FastStatic base station
• Start the FastStatic rover survey
• Measure points with the FastStatic rover
• End the FastStatic rover survey
• End the FastStatic base survey
These steps are detailed on the following pages.

Ending the FastStatic Base Station Survey
Caution - Do not press End until you want to stop collecting data at the base station. Since the
corresponding base station data is always required to process rover data, the base station survey should
never be stopped while the FastStatic rover is still collecting data.
www.trimble.com Page 31
Performing a PPK Survey
Application
PPK surveys generally employ one GPS base station, and one (or several) GPS rover units.
• The GPS base station collects data continuously throughout the duration of the field survey. It is
important to note that the base station must not be shut down while the rover units are collecting data.
If this occurs, the office software is not able to compute baseline results for any rover data collected
while the base station is shut down.
• The GPS rover units also collect data throughout the duration of the field survey. This data is tagged as
either point data (data collected at a surveyed point), or moving data (data collected while the rover is
in motion between surveyed points). However, a rover unit may be stopped and re-started at any time
during the survey without affecting any of the other rover units.
Office processing of the PPK data results in a radial survey. Coordinates for the surveyed points are the
result of radial baselines, between the base station and each individual rover position.
Workflow
The following steps are required to perform the PPK survey:
• Start the PPK base station
• Start the PPK rover survey
• Perform a new point initialization at the rover
• Measure topo points with the PPK rover
• Measure points using the continuous topo method (if required)
• End the PPK rover survey
• End the PPK base survey
Any time that the software reports that “initialization has been lost” you should perform a new
initialization. You have several options for re-initializing.
• Perform a new point initialization (as described above), or
• Perform a known point initialization
These steps are detailed on the following pages.

Initializing a Survey Using the New Point Method
Initialization The initialization is the first step in conducting a PPK rover survey. The
initialization is required to help the office software in successfully computing
the baselines for all of the points measured during the PPK survey.
There are several methods for conducting the initialization. These are:
• Known point initialization
• New point initialization
The new point initialization is described in this section.
New Point The new point initialization requires that you collect data on a stationary point
Initialization for a set amount of time, depending on the number of available satellites
during the observation. The default times are set in the PPK survey style, but
you can also view or edit the times by selecting the Options tab from within
the initialization screen.
The point used in the new point initialization can be any point on the project.
The only requirement is that you must not move the PPK rover during the
initialization period.
www.trimble.com Page 36
2 To set up the new point initialization.
• Enter the point name for the initialization point.
• Enter the feature code, if required.
• Check (or enter) the antenna height.
• Check that the Measured to selection is correct.

Measuring Continuous Topo with the PPK Rover
This section lists the steps for measuring survey points in a continuous topo mode with a PPK rover. This
allows you to measure a large number of points in a very short period of time. The points are measured,
at the specified time interval, as the rover is moving.
www.trimble.com Page 40
3 To stop the continuous topo measurement.
• Press End.
Caution - Do not press End Survey until you want to stop collecting data at the PPK rover. Each
time you restart the PPK rover survey, you must perform a new initialization using either the “New Point”
or “Known Point” methods, as described above. The choice of initialization method depends on the
circumstances, and whether an existing control point is available to use with the “Known Point” method.
www.trimble.com Page 41
Ending the PPK Base Station Survey
Caution - Do not press End until you want to stop collecting data at the base station. Since the
PPK base station data is required to process baselines for all rover collected data, the PPK base station
survey should never be stopped while the PPK rover is still collecting data.
www.trimble.com Page 42
Initializing a Survey Using the Known Point Method
Re-initialization At times, during the PPK field survey, you may lose lock on the satellites that
the GPS receiver is tracking. This may be caused by obstructions that block the
signal path to the GPS antenna. Typical obstructions are trees, buildings,
bridges, tall fences, or any other object that rises above the height of the GPS
antenna.
In this case, you must re-initialize the survey. This may be accomplished using
either of the following methods:
• “New Point” method described in an earlier section of this document.
• “Known Point” method as described below.
Known Point The known point initialization requires that you occupy an existing control
Initialization point for a short period of time…typically just a few seconds.
The coordinates for the occupied control point must already exist in the current
job file. This may be a point that was surveyed earlier in the project. Again, the
PPK rover must not be moved during the initialization period.
www.trimble.com Page 43
2 • Press Init.
3 If the screen still reports PPK: Fixed, you are asked if you
want to discard the current initialization.
To discard the current initialization.
• Tap Yes.
