Math 10 q4 M2

The document is a mathematics module for a 10th grade class that discusses permutation formulas. It includes examples of applying the permutation formula to find the number of permutations of n objects taken r at a time. It also discusses the difference between permutations of indistinguishable versus distinguishable objects, providing examples of using the appropriate formula to account for identical objects that can be arranged in different ways. Sample problems are provided applying these concepts along with explanations and step-by-step solutions.

Discussion

During the quarantine period, you have decided to clean your room. You found the following items:
watch laptop mobile phone shoes
book tablet bracelet shirt

Suppose you want to store each of these items in a box. There are 8 items to be placed but
you only have 3 boxes where only one thing can be placed in each box. How many options do you
have if you are going to choose 3 according to its importance?

What will you place on the first, second, and third boxes? Why?
In this situation, suppose you choose to place your laptop in the first box, your mobile phone in the
second box, and your book in the third box. Aside from these, what other arrangements can be
formed? How can we compute all the possible ways of placing these items?
We determine that there are three events here and each event is where an item will be placed in an
empty box. By the Fundamental Counting Principle, there are 8 x 7 x 6 permutations. Observe that
8 ×7 ×6 × 5! 8!
8 x 7 x 6 can be expressed as which is equal to
5! 5!
What does 8 and 5 represent? Eight represents the number of items you choose from while 5
represents the remaining items that were not chosen. This can be denoted in permutation notation
as;

n!
n Pr = where n and r are positive integers and 1 ≤ r ≤ n.
( N −n ) !
n Pr is read as “Permutation of n objects taken r at a time”. Other notations are:

P(n,r), and P ( nr )
From our given example, if we use the Permutation formula, nPr, to determine the number of
possible ways of storing 8 things, n = 8, and 3 items at a time in 3 boxes, r = 3, then it will be,
8! 8 ! 8 ×7 ×6 × 5!
8 P3 = = = = 8 × 7 × 6 = 336 ways
( 8−3 ) ! 5! 5!
Examples:
1. Evaluate the following Permutations.

A. 6P6 B. P(10,4) C. P ( 125 )

Solutions:
6! 6!
A. 6P6 = =

2. Find the unknown variable.
A. 9Pr = 504
B. P(n, 3) = 990
Solutions:
A. 9Pr = 504 B. P(n, 3) = 990
9! n!

( 9−r ) ! ( n−3 ) !

6! = (9 – r)! n = 11

6–9=–r
–3=–r

3. Solve the following problems.

A. In how many ways can the letters of the word COVID be arranged if all letters are used?

B. How many different ways can the 6 Grab Food motorcycles be parked if there are 8 available
parking spaces?

bills are arranged in a wallet.
A. 2,500 B. 2,510
C. 2,515 D. 2,520

Discussion

How many possible three-letter arrangements are there in the word MOM? Using the permutation
3P3 = 3! = 6 then, by tree diagram these are the results;
As shown in the
diagram above there are 6 arrangements. What did you observe about the three-letter
arrangements? There are 2-MOM, 2-OMM, and 2- MMO. We know that the permutations of 3 letters
of the word MOM are 3!, we must take into consideration that we cannot distinguish between the
two M’s in any of the permutation but the two M’s can be permuted in 2! ways and do not produce a
different result. Hence, the number of distinguishable permutations P is given by
3!
P= =3
2!
Permutations with repetition (Distinguishable Permutation) The number of permutations of n
things where a things are alike, b things are alike, and c things are alike, and so forth, is:
n!
P=
a ! b ! c !…
Examples:
1. Find the number of distinguishable permutations of the letters in the word BASKETBALL.
Solution:
There is a total of 10! permutations in the word BASKETBALL but there are 2 B’s, 2 A’s,
and 2 L’s and can be permuted 2!, 2!, 2! ways respectively, in each permutation without
altering the result. Hence, the number of distinguishable permutations is given by:
10 !
P= =¿ 453,600 ways
2! 2 ! 2 !
2. I have 6 face masks and 4 face shields to give to 10 frontliners. In how many ways can I
distribute the 10 gifts to the 10 frontliners?
Solution:
Since there are 10 gifts and 10 frontliners, using the formula, I can distribute the gifts in
10! 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 !
= = 210 ways
6!4! 6! x 4 x 3 x2 x1
3. A frontliner at the Pasig City General Hospital has 4 blue PPEs, 3 white PPEs, and 2 green
PPEs. In how many ways can he arrange all his PPE’s in his locker?
Solution:
9!
= 1, 260 ways
4!3!2!
