Chapter I
THE INTRODUCTION
Context and Rationale
Financial challenges are a critical concern for individuals, particularly
students. Many students face the difficulty of managing their expenses, particularly
those who come from underprivileged backgrounds. Consequently, students are
forced to make tough choices, such as deciding whether to allocate funds for food
or other basic necessities. Some also experience health problems that can
negatively impact their financial stability.
Olufemioladebinu et al. (2018) posited that students from low socio-
economic backgrounds tend to exhibit poor academic performance compared to
their peers from more affluent families. Furthermore, Asri et al. (2017) asserted that
students from higher economic backgrounds have access to a more stimulating
learning environment, making it possible for them to excel and achieve better
academic outcomes compared to those from low-income families. Nnamani, Dikko,
and Kinta (2014) also suggested that financial difficulties experienced by students
significantly contribute to their poor academic performance, which in turn impacts
the overall quality of education. Early literature suggests that financial problems
lead to financial stress, which ultimately influences the academic performance of
students. In a study conducted by Widener (2017), financial stress was consistently
4

Region III

TAPINAC SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Donor St., East Tapinac, Olongapo City, Zambales
linked to low academic performance among students. As Asri et al. (2017) noted,
there are numerous factors that affect academic performance, but family socio-
economic status is a significant factor as it impacts financial management, which
can either motivate or discourage students from pursuing academic success.
Asri et al. (2017) argued that inadequate financial management could result
in an individual's inability to manage stress, leading to adverse effects on their daily
life, including physical illness and depression. This assertion is supported by Asri et
al.'s (2017) study, which identified financial problems as a leading cause of stress
among students. Students experiencing financial difficulties may feel anxious and
dizzy, which can lead to tension and other related health problems.
Financial plays an important role in students’ academic performance.
Financial problems are a serious issue that needs to be addressed as it leads to
multiple stages of problems such as health issues and academic performance.
Dang and Bulus (2015) education is a high-cost social service therefore insufficient
financial support will be a problem for students to enhance themselves in
academics thus leading to poor academic performance.
As ICT students, it is crucial that we conduct this type of research in order to
fully understand the financial challenges that we will face in the future, particularly in
college. This will also help us to identify and raise awareness among other students
who will also be enrolled in ICT courses in order to give them an insight that can
inform them and to highlight the challenges, financial support that is required, and
many other things.

Theoretical Framework
According to Beata Swiecka, the earliest known use of the term financial
literacy can be traced back to 1992, when report for the National Foundation for
Educational Research (NFER) commissioned by NatWest Bank, defined financial
literacy as “the ability to make informed judgments and take effective decisions
regarding the use and management of money” ( Noctor, Stoney, Straddling, 1992).
Financial literacy as a theoretical construct was championed by the Jumpstart
Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy in its inaugural 1997 study JumpStart
Survey of Financial Literacy Among High School Students. In this study Jumpstart
defined “financial literacy “as “the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage
one’s financial resources effectively for lifetime financial security.” Financial
education is aimed at increasing financial knowledge and skills, rationalizing
financial decisions, efficiency of personal finance management, and implementation
of assumed financial and non-financial goals. It is a process that can begin at every
stage of life and last a lifetime. The process of acquiring financial competences
starts with acquiring knowledge, which should (but not necessarily does) translate
into enhanced skills. It may end at the stage of gaining knowledge and bring about
no change in the financial behaviours. The recipients receive knowledge, but do not
use it in practice, thereby their attitudes remain unchanged. It helps the students to
gain more knowledge about saving and spending, planning and budgeting and

Students that study information and communication technology (ICT) at
Tapinac Senior High School may perform poorly academically, which may have an
effect on their prospects for a future profession. The purpose of this study is to
determine the magnitude of this effect and the particular difficulties that ICT
students confront as a result of budgetary limitations.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What level of financial hardship do ICT students at Tapinac Senior High
School experience?
2. What particular difficulties do students studying ICT experience because
of a lack of funding?
3. What effects does the lack of money have on the academic success of
ICT students at Tapinac Senior High School?
4. What can Tapinac Senior High School and other important stakeholders
do to help ICT students who are struggling financially achieve better
academic results?
Assumption
The following is the assumption of the study:
Financial struggles may lead to students being unable to afford necessary
school supplies, transportation to school, and other expenses associated with
attending school. Students may also have to work long hours to support themselves

and their families, leaving less time and energy for studying and completing
schoolwork.
Scope and Delimitation
High School will be the main focus of this study. The study will look at how
The academic effects of financial hardship on ICT students at Tapinac Senior
articular population's academic success, attendance, and involvement in school are
related to their financial challenges. The study will also look at the support systems
available to these students and how well they work to lessen the detrimental effects
of financial hardship on academic achievement.
The sample size and the characteristics of the student population are just
two of the aspects that limit this study. Only Tapinac Senior High School ICT
students who have struggled with money while attending the school will be included
in the study. The results of this study might not apply to other student populations or
educational settings.
Significance of the Study
The beneficiaries of studying the academic impact of financial struggle on
ICT students at Tapinac Senior High School are:
Students. The ICT students themselves are the study's main beneficiaries.
The study can offer light on the particular difficulties experienced by these students
and how financial limitations may affect their academic performance by looking at
how financial hardships have an impact on their academic success. The research

can aid in educating students about potential challenges they might face and
directing them toward the right sources of assistance and resources.
Teachers and School Administrators. Teachers and school administrators
at Tapinac Senior High School can benefit greatly from the study's findings.
Understanding how financial difficulties affect ICT students' academic performance
might help educators pinpoint the precise areas where students might need further
assistance. With the help of this information, specific interventions and programs
can be created to meet the needs of kids who are struggling financially and improve
their academic performance.
Parents and Families. By addressing the potential effects of financial
hardship on their children's education, the study can be helpful to parents and
families of ICT students. It can aid in parents' comprehension of the difficulties their
kids may encounter and inspire them to look for accessible aid and support
systems. Furthermore, the results might give parents advice on how to best help
their kids academically despite financial constraints.
Policymakers and Educational Authorities. The results of this study can
help policymakers and educational authorities in their decision-making processes.
In order to reduce educational inequities and provide equal opportunities for all
students, policies and strategies should take into account the academic effects of
financial hardship on ICT students. It can aid in the creation of financial aid
schemes, scholarships, or other projects that help ICT students who are struggling
financially and encourage their academic success.

Research Community. By enhancing the body of knowledge already
available on the effects of financial hardship on students pursuing ICT education,
the study can help the larger research community. It can be used as a guide for
future studies looking into related topics in various settings and as a foundation for
further investigation and exploration of viable remedies to overcome financial
barriers in education.
Definition of Terms
ICT. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education is
the mode of education that use information and communications technology to
support, enhance, and optimise the delivery of information.

Chapter 2
METHODOLOGY
This chapter presented the type of research, respondents, sampling method,
research instrument, data collection procedure, ethical consideration, data analysis,
work plan and cost estimates.
Furthermore, this chapter will go into detail on how the study will be carried
out and how relevant results will be obtained.
Type of Research
This qualitative research study used to be able to gather information and
perceive the academic impact of the financial struggle of ICT students at Tapinac
Senior High School.
Qualitative method is used to understand people's beliefs, experiences,
attitudes, behavior, and interactions. According to Bhandari (2020), Qualitative
research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or
audio) to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can be used to gather
in-depth insights into a problem or generate new ideas for research. Pathak, Jena,
Kalra (2013), Qualitative method is used to understand people's beliefs,
experiences, attitudes, behaviour, and interactions. It generates non-numerical
data. The integration of qualitative research into intervention studies is a research
strategy that is gaining increased attention across disciplines.
This study specifically focuses on understanding a research query as a
humanistic or idealistic approach to the impact of financial problems on students.

Sampling Method
This study is going to use convenience sampling. According to Etikan and
others (2016), convenience sampling (also known as availability sampling) is a type
of non-probability/non-random where members of the target population that meet
certain practical criteria, such as easy accessibility, availability at a given time, or
the willingness to participate are included for the purpose of the study. Convenience
sampling is either a collection of subjects that are accessible or a self-selection of
individuals willing to participate which is exemplified by the volunteers. The
researchers used the convenience sampling since it is the easiest way to gather
respondents and conduct a survey.
Research Instrument
In this study, the researcher will be using the questionnaire survey form to
gather answer from respondents. The questionnaire is a set of orderly arranged
questions carefully prepared to answer by a group of people designed to collect
facts and information. The questionnaire has (2) two parts. The questionnaire
consisted of items that determined the Impact of Financial Struggle of ICT Student
of Tapinac Senior High School.
Data Collection Procedures
The researcher asked permission to the Department Head of ICT strand to
allow them perform research and disseminate the questionnaire.

The researchers select the ICT curriculum and conducted an in-depth
understanding of questions after receiving approval. That before study was
conducted, each participants was given the opportunity to discuss and sign
informed consent. The participants were informed that the data would be kept
confidential, relevant and accurate.
Ethical Considerations
Bhandari (2021) Ethical considerations in research are a set of principles
that guide your research designs and practices. When discussing the academic
impact of financial struggles faced by ICT students at Tapinac Senior High School,
there are several ethical considerations that should be taken into account.
First and foremost, it is important to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the
students involved in the study. This means that any data collected must be kept
anonymous and secure, and any identifying information should be removed or
anonymized before analysis. Additionally, informed consent should be obtained
from all participants, and they should be made aware of the purpose and potential
outcomes of the study.
Secondly, it is important to avoid any bias or discrimination against the
students based on their financial situation. The study should focus on the academic
impact of financial struggles, rather than making assumptions about the students'
abilities or potential based on their financial status.
Thirdly, it is important to ensure that the study does not further disadvantage
the students or their families. This means that any recommendations or
16
Department of Education
Region III
SCHOOLS DIVISION OFFICE OF OLONGAPO CITY
TAPINAC SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Donor St., East Tapinac, Olongapo City, Zambales
interventions should be designed to provide support and assistance, rather than
adding to the students' financial burdens.
Finally, it is important to acknowledge and address any power imbalances that
may exist between the researchers and the students. The study should be
conducted in a respectful and collaborative manner, with the students' voices and
perspectives being valued and incorporated into the research finding.
Data Analysis
Thematic analysis is the process of identifying patterns or themes within
qualitative data. Braun & Clarke (2006) suggest that it is the first qualitative method
that should be learned as ‘..it provides core skills that will be useful for conducting
many other kinds of analysis’ (p.78). A further advantage, particularly from the
perspective of learning and teaching, is that it is a method rather than a
methodology (Braun & Clarke 2006; Clarke & Braun, (2013). This means that,
unlike many qualitative methodologies, it is not tied to a particular epistemological
or theoretical perspective. This makes it a very flexible method, a considerable
advantage given the diversity of work in learning and teaching
