MODE OF DELIVERY - UNASSISTED ONLINE LEARNING
Self-study within 6 weeks. Minimum focused learning time required: approximately 90 hours.

DESCRIPTION
Coding and Robotics Management - Multi-literacy, represent the first level of ensuring quality teaching of coding and robotics at
school level for the Early Years of development. STADIO, in association with AMASI, present a first on-line short learning
programme designed to provide, in-service teachers, staff at district management levels of the National Department of Education,
as well as Tertiary lecturers involved with teacher training, looking to upskill with core competencies of Coding and Robotics for
children in the early years of development (Grades R to 3) in South African schools. This SLP1 (4 September to 13 October ) is a
prerequisite for access to the second SLP 2 ( from 23 October to 24 November).

COMPLEXITY LEVEL
STADIO’s Online Short Learning Programmes (SLPs) are non- credit-bearing short courses, designed to provide you with high level
knowledge in a particular field of study to assist you in the workplace if you don’t have the time to enrol for a full-length programme.
Successful completion of the Online SLP, however, can be included in your portfolio of evidence for Recognition of Prior Learning
(RPL) for consideration when accessing a full qualification.
FEES
R3 900.00 ( This excludes the textbook and courier cost of materials)

STUDY MATERIAL
All study material for this programme will be available online.

OUTCOMES
1. All modules are core compulsory modules to the SLP - Coding and Robotics Management - Multi-Literacy Course 1 – CCRM1.
2. The study material will include a range of open source articles as well as videos with a prescribed book called Bers, M. U. (2021).
Coding as a playground: Programming and computational thinking in the early childhood classroom. Routledge. The body of
knowledge is therefore integrated with the prescribed textbooks as well as the articles and videos.
3. The students will be guided by working with through Canvas, the Learning Management System of Stadio. The CCRM1
framework entails study units. Students will have to work through reading content aligned with hands-on coding activities
prescribed by the course, on their individual electronic devices. There will be an interplay between learning to code as student of
the course and learning to teach how to code to young learners.
4. Students will have to complete a continuous assessment quiz at the end of each study unit, that will have to be entered on the
LMS. They will also have to submit a small portfolio of evidence reflecting their own coding efforts, onto the LMS. The final mark
will be the accumulated mark of all the continuous assessment quizzes and the portfolio of evidence of the student’s own coding
efforts. There will be no final examination.

COURSE CURRICULUM
TOPIC 1: CODING AS A LITERACY: INTRODUCTION AND PHILOSOPHICAL UNDERPINNING OF CODING AND
ROBOTICS MANAGEMENT MULTI-LITERACY

• The aim of this topic is to define the philosophical underpinning and literacy aspects of CODING AND ROBOTICS MANAGEMENT, by means of
definitions, terminology, functions and principles

TOPIC 2 : “HABITS OF MIND “AND “POWERFUL IDEAS” RELATED TO CODING AND ROBOTICS MANAGEMENT
MULTI-LITERACY

• The aim of this topic is to introduce you to hands-on, pre-coding/unplugged and online teaching trajectories for CODING AND ROBOTICS
MANAGEMENT, in terms of delineating distinct hierarchical teaching trajectories, exemplifying the appropriate underpinning “Habits of Mind” and “Big
Ideas” for both online and offline coding and robotics learning.

TOPIC 3: THE ROLE OF “PATTERNING” IN CODING AND ROBOTICS MANAGEMENT MULTI-LITERACY

• The aim of this topic is to introduce you to different types of patterns and its consequential skills requirements. These patterning types and their related
skills are then expressed in a hierarchy that mimics developmentally appropriate grade levels of thinking as in the prescribed draft curriculum for coding and
robotics for the Early Years of development in SA.

TOPIC 4: CODING FOR PRE-READERS IN CODING AND ROBOTICS MANAGEMENT MULTI-LITERACY

• The aim of this topic is to introduce you to a teaching sequence, accompanied by a developmentally appropriate teaching methodology of play and conceptual
Play-Worlds, for Pre-Readers. This is done through detailing the role of storytelling and use of the appropriate story scenarios/contexts and props, which then
leads to practice utilizing a floor Robot (E.g. Kibo, Bee-Bot, Blue-Bot etc).

TOPIC 5: CODING FOR READERS IN CODING AND ROBOTICS MANAGEMENT MULTI-LITERACY

• The aim of this topic is to introduce you to a teaching sequence, accompanied by a developmentally appropriate teaching methodology of Inquiry Based
investigation, for Readers. This is done through detailing the role of sequenced logical events representation, supported by the use of the appropriate story
scenarios/contexts and props, which then leads to practice, utilizing ScratchJR as a plugged-in coding app.

TOPIC 6: ROBOTS AND RELATED E-SKILLS IN CODING AND ROBOTICS MANAGEMENT MULTI-LITERACY

• The aim of this topic is to introduce you to robots and their use in teaching and learning of coding and robotics. This is done through the explication of the
different types of robots and its links to a Positive Development Framework (PTD) and BotSTEM teaching framework that underpins robotics teaching
and learning for the early year of development. Finally the TechCheck assessment framework is introduced to assist with formal and informal assessment of
learner computational skills in the early years of development

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
• Access to internet via an electronic device with operating system supporting ScratchJr open-source application
(Tablets as well as computers)
• Web browser: Chrome 35 or later, Firefox 31 or later, Internet Explorer 8 or later. Adobe Flash Player Version 10.2 or later
Minimal Supported Screen Resolution: 1024×768. ScratchJr runs on both iPads and Android tablets. ScratchJr can be installed
on any iPad running iOS 9.3 or greater.

STUDY MATERIAL
Students Will Be Required To Buy A Prescribed Book For Use In Both Courses. The book will be at a cost of aproximately R565.00
(that includes the courier cost) and can be ordered from the supplier. The textbook is compulsory.
