KEYS

Situational Problem (1 – 2)
A rectangular key was used in a pulley connected to a lineshaft with a power of 125 kW at a speed of 900
rpm. If the stress of the shaft is 40 MPa and the key is 22 MPa.
1. What is the diameter of the shaft?
A. 51.7 mm B. 55.3 mm C. 61.5 mm D. 65.1 mm
2. Determine the length of the rectangular key if the width is one-fourth that of the shaft diameter.
A. 179.5 mm B. 175.9 mm C. 157.9 mm D. 159.7 mm
3. A keyed sprocket delivers a torque of 778.8 N - m thru the shaft of 54 mm OD. The key thickness is
1.5875 cm and the width is 1.11 cm. Compute the length of the same key. The permissible stress
value of 60 MPa for shear and 90 MPa for tension.
A. 39.12 cm B. 4.82 cm C. 52.22 cm D. 4.32 cm
4. A line shaft with a power of 100 kW at a speed of 1,200 rpm, had a rectangular key in its pulley
connection. Consider the shearing stress of the shaft to be 40 N/mm2 and the key to be 30 N/mm2.
Determine the length of the rectangular key if the width is one-fourth that of the shaft diameter.
A. 67.64 mm B. 77.64 mm C. 97.64 mm D. 87.64 mm
5. A 32.5 mm x 22.5 mm key is to be designed for a 125 mm shaft which will transmit power of 150 kW
at 1,800 rpm. If the allowable shear stress of the key is 30 N/mm2 and the allowable compressive
stress is 5 N/mm2. Determine the length of the key to be used based on the compression.
A. 226.4 mm B. 413.2 mm C. 642.8 mm D. 884.6 mm
6. A 20 mm square key with a length of 150 mm was used in a 100 mm shaft to fasten a 250 mm spur
gear. Determine the force that will cause the key to shear if the shearing stress is 25 MPa.
A. 60 kN B. 65 kN C. 70 kN D. 75 kN
7. A key with a length of 7.5 times its thickness is subjected to a compressive force of 75 kN. Determine
the thickness of the key if the compressive stress is 50 MPa.
A. 10 mm B. 20 mm C. 25 mm D. 15 mm
8. A 20 mm square key with a length of 150 mm was used in a 100 mm shaft to fasten a 250 mm pulley.
Determine the crushing force on the hub if the bearing stress of the hub is 50 MPa.
A. 75 kN B. 70 kN C. 60 kN D. 65 kN
9. A 80 mm steel shaft develops 5 kN - m torque and using a flat key to fasten a 250 mm pulley. The
crushing stress of the key is 50 MPa. The key has a width and length of 20 mm and 150 mm,
respectively. What is the key thickness?
A. 21.15 mm B. 26.86 mm C. 33.29 mm D. 36.48 mm
10. A 100 mm steel shaft develops a 3.75 kN - m torque and using a square key to fasten a 250 mm
pulley. The crushing stress of the key is 50 MPa. The key has a width of 20 mm and length of 150
mm. Determine the key thickness.
