Transformation of plane stress
Using the following trigonometric identities:
Transformation of plane stress
The state of plane stress at a point is represented by the stress element below.
Determine the stresses acting on an element oriented 30° clockwise with respect to
the original element.
Transformation of plane stress
Transformation of plane stress
Other quantities that could be found using transformation of stresses:
- Maximum and minimum normal stresses, also known as principal stresses
-Planes at which principal stresses occur, known as principal planes
- Maximum shear stresses and planes at which they occur
Transformation of plane stress
The state of plane stress at a point is represented by the stress element below.
Determine the principal stresses acting on an element with respect to the original
element.
Transformation of plane stress
A cylindrical pressure vessel is constructed with a helical weld that makes an angle of 55o with
the longitudinal axis. The tank has inside radius 1.8m and wall thickness 8mm. The maximum
internal pressure is 600kPa.
According to the data given above, circumferential and longitudinal stresses are 67.5MPa and
135MPa respectively.
