2023 Assignments Introduction To Engineering Design

This document outlines the assignments for an Introduction to Design course in Mechanical Engineering. It includes two sections - the first involves individual assignments to be completed within one week, asking students to list uses for rack and pinion gears, design alternative energy harvesters using a morphological chart, and consider design factors for a mini trailer transporting stones. The second section is a group project due in four weeks, where students must design portable machines to reduce the size of maize cobs and load them onto a truck to supply biomass energy at a minimum rate of 5 tonnes per hour. The design will be assessed based on calculations, diagrams, material selection, presentation, and meeting deadlines.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

EMG 3206: INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN

ASSIGNMENTS

DATE: OCTOBER 2023 TIME: 1 WEEK

Section 1: Attempt all questions and submit your answers within a week

a) Design requires creativity. List 10 different uses for Rack & pinion gears.
b) You are employed by a company specializing in renewable power generation, and
you have been tasked with designing a novel vibration/motion energy harvester.
Utilize the morphological chart method to create various alternative design concepts.
For this exercise, identify one function or attribute for each of the two dimensions.
Then, propose three alternative solutions for each dimension. Construct a
morphological box (or chart) to systematically explore and identify potential design
concepts.
c) Mention FIVE Design Considerations you would incorporate in the design of a mini
trailer to transport raw uncrushed stones to a mini crusher located in a hilly area with
lots of surface stone. The trailer will be pulled by a mini tractor and is meant to replace
the current method of delivering the stones to the crusher.

Section 2: Project to be done in groups of up to 10 students, and should be submitted

in 4 weeks

a) Due to rising petroleum costs, industries are exploring alternative clean energy
sources, such as biomass energy. In Kenya, maize cobs are increasingly used to fuel
boilers. However, the lightweight and irregular shape of maize cobs make them
difficult to compact and load. Design a portable machine that reduces the size of the
cobs to 5 cm and another portable machine to load the cut cobs onto a truck with a
maximum height of 4.7m. The system should have a minimum capacity of 5 tonnes
per hour. Include all relevant calculations, material selection, and safety features.

Assessment Criteria:
• Correctness of Calculations: 40%
• Clarity and Quality of Diagrams: 20%
• Material Selection and Justification: 20%
• Overall Presentation: 10%
• Adherence to Deadlines: 10%
