Spearman’s Rank Correlation
The following data represent the Statistics grades for a random sample of 12 freshman-nursing
students of ABCD along with their IQ score. Compute and Interpret the sample correlation
coefficient. Test the null hypothesis that there is no significant relationship between IQ score
and the Statistics grade at 0.05 level of significance.
Solutions:
Step 1: Construct the Null and Alternative Hypothesis.
Ho: 𝑟𝑠 = 0 (There is no correlation between the IQ Score and the Statistics grade.)
Ha: 𝑟𝑠 ≠ 0 (There is a correlation between the IQ Score and the Statistics grade.)
Step 2: State the level of Significance
Level of Significance = 0.05
Step 3: Calculate the degrees of freedom (𝒅𝒇 = 𝑵 − 𝟐) and determine the critical value of t or
𝒕𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍.
𝑑𝑓 = 15 − 2 𝑡𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 = 2.160
𝑑𝑓 = 13
Step 4: Compute for the value of Spearman rho or 𝒓𝒔
Student IQ Score X Grade in Statistics Y Rank X Rank Y D
1 65 85 8.5 7 1.5 2.25
2 50 74 14.5 13.5 1 1
3 55 76 12 11.5 0.5 0.25
4 65 90 8.5 3.5 5 25
5 70 85 4.5 7 -2.5 6.25
6 65 87 8.5 5 3.5 12.25
7 70 94 4.5 1 3.5 12.25
8 55 85 12 7 5 25
9 70 90 4.5 3.5 1 1
10 50 81 14.5 9 5.5 30.25
11 55 91 12 2 10 100
12 75 76 2 11.5 -9.5 90.25
13 80 74 1 13.5 -12.5 156.25
14 65 80 8.5 10 -1.5 2.25
15 70 70 4.5 15 -10.5 110.25
574.5
𝐶𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝐶𝑜𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 = −0.056
Step 5: Calculate the 𝒕𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 then determine the decision.
𝑟𝑠 √𝑁− −0.056√15−
𝑡= 2
𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 = 𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 = −0.2025
√1−𝑟𝑠 √1−(−0.056)2
How to determine the decision?
If… Then the decision is…
𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 < 𝑡𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 Do not reject the Ho (Null
Hypothesis)
𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 ≥ 𝑡𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 Reject the Ho (Null Hypothesis)
𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑡𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙
0.2025 < 2.160
Accept the Ho (Null Hypothesis)
Step 6: State the Conclusion
Answer the following questions:
1. Is there a relationship between the two variables being tested?
2. What degree is their relationship or correlation?
Answer:
1. There is no significant relationship between the IQ Score and the Statistics grade.
2. The correlation/relationship is very low correlation.
Interpretation
