The Service
The opening skill in the game determined by a coin toss
in which the winning team will be able to choose the
service side of the court.
• Kinds of Serve
• Underhand Serve
• The player faces the net with the left foot in
front of the right foot. Swing the cupped hand
backward and the hand follows the ball
straight through the direction of the flight of
the ball or a follow-through movement.

The Service
• Overhand Serve
• A common and effective style. This service is
executed by tossing the ball 2 to 3 feet in the
air above in front of the right shoulder.
• Floater- done by hitting the ball at its

The Service
• Sidearm serve
• The ball is held at about hip level and is tossed
about a foot into the air while the arm swings
parallel to the floor. The side of the body and the
forward foot is determined by the opposite of the
player’s dominant hand.

Passing
• This refers to ball handling skills. This is the act of
hitting the ball intentionally or unintentionally.
• Tossing– is passing the ball by means of the fleshy
parts of the fingers and using a wrist action.
• Forearm pass– a pass that is also called “bump” or

This is used to pass the serve, play balls below the

The Service
• Overhand pass– It is used for accurately passing any
ball above the head and for setting technique of
passing the ball to an attacker with specific height
and placement.
• One-Arm Pass or Emergency Pass– Done in
emergency situations like when the ball comes and
cannot be intercepted by two hands especially if the
ball is quite far to establish a position for a correct
hand pass or toss.

Spiking and Blocking


• Spike
• Spiking is an attack skill. The ball is driven hard to
kill it to the opponent’s court. The ball should be
set and spikers fake one or two steps, jump and
spike hard near the net.
• Block

• Blocking aims to make the ball unreturnable while
it’s in the opponent’s court. This is accomplished
by jumping and positioning the hands above and
over the net, giving less area for the attacker.

Basic Steps for effective Blocking Techniques

• Side step– this is done to develop the leaping ability


of the individual in blocking the ball closely in front
of the net.

Tips to improve the blocking ability:

• Always be in time with the ball . Timing is always


important before taking the leap or jump on
blocking. Coordination with the teammates,
particularly front row players, must be considered.
• Read the ball. Always know where the ball will go
