Speaking Part 2 LV4

The document discusses various life lessons and situations requiring choices. For the first situation of choosing a useful life lesson for university, the respondent chooses "Never compare yourself to others. Just be happy with who you are" as it helps avoid stress from constant comparisons. For a birthday gift for their mother, they suggest a wooden coffee table as it is both practical, matches her style, and will remind her of the gift. For an internship, they prefer being a video game designer as it aligns with their creative skills and interests. If winning the lottery, they would donate most of the money to charity to directly help those in need.

You are on page 1/ 9

1. You have just entered university.

Which life lesson do you find the

most useful for you ?
• If you want to succeed in life, you first have to fail.
• There is nothing in life more valuable than friendship.
• Never compare yourself to others. Just be happy with who you are.

Among the valuable life lessons I've encountered, I find the lesson
"Never compare yourself to others. Just be happy with who you are" to
be the most useful for me at the university stage.

University can be a time of intense competition and high expectations.

It's easy to fall into the trap of constantly comparing oneself to others,
whether it's in terms of academic performance, social status, or
personal achievements. However, I believe that focusing on personal
growth is the key to happiness and success.

When you constantly compare yourself to others, it can lead to feelings

of stress and self-doubt. Embracing my individuality allows me to set my
own goals and benchmarks for success, rather than trying to meet
someone else's standards.

While learning from failures is valuable, solely focusing on this idea

might lead to a fear of failure or even a tolerance for repeated
failure.Friendship is important in life, offering companionship and
support. However, life consists of various aspects, including personal
growth, career, family, and health.
2. You are considering a birthday present for your mother.
There are three suggestions:
• An accessory.
• A piece of art.
• A piece of furniture.
Which do you think is the best choice ?
* (Use different adjectives and relative clauses to describe the item you
choose in detail.)

I think the best choice for a birthday gift for my mother would be a
piece of furniture, like a stylish wooden coffee table.

A wooden coffee table is both practical and beautiful. It can be made to

match her style and the look of her home, which would make it a special
and considerate gift. The coffee table can be placed in her living room
and used for various purposes, like placing her coffee, displaying
decorative items, or just having a place to put things when guests come
over.

Besides, this gift is durable, so it will last a long time. Every time she uses
or looks at it, it will remind her of the special day and the love behind
the gift. So, I believe a wooden coffee table would make a thoughtful
and lasting birthday present for my mother.

While accessories like jewellery are lovely gifts, they might not be as
substantial or long-lasting. And a piece of art is not suitable for my
mom because she doesn't have passion in this field.
3. You have a chance to do an internship at a company.
There are three types of jobs:
Astronaut
Journalist
Video game designer.
Which one would you take?
* (Mention character traits, skills and qualifications required for the job which
you think are suitable for you)

If I were to choose from the three internship options of being an

astronaut, journalist, or video game designer, I would opt for the role of
a videogame designer. This choice aligns well with my character traits,
skills, and qualifications.

Firstly, I consider myself a creative individual. I enjoy brainstorming and

coming up with new ideas, which is a crucial aspect of video game
design. Crafting engaging game concepts, characters, and storylines
requires a high level of creativity, and I find great fulfilment in the
creative process.

In terms of skills, while I may not be a coding expert, I have a basic

understanding of programming languages, which can be further
developed during the internship. Additionally, I have an interest in
graphic design, which is advantageous for creating visual elements in
games.

While the roles of an astronaut are fascinating, I am quite afraid of

outer space and can risk my life. And I'm an introvert and don't like jobs
that require writing, so I didn't choose a journalist
4. Imagine you won a lot of money in the lottery. You need to decide
how you would spend MOST of the money on.
There are three options suggested:
Invest it.
Share it with your friends and family.
Make a large donation to charity.
Which one would you do?

If I were lucky enough to win a substantial amount of money in the

lottery, my primary choice for how to spend most of that money would
be to 'Make a large donation to charity.' There are several reasons why I
believe this is the best course of action.

First, winning the lottery is an incredible stroke of luck.By making a

substantial charitable donation, I have the opportunity to directly and
positively impact the lives of those in need.

On a personal level, the act of helping others and contributing to

society I deeply care about would bring me a profound sense of
fulfilment and satisfaction. It's not just about the financial aspect; it's
about using wealth to make a positive difference in the world, which is
something I find incredibly rewarding.

While investing and sharing with friends and family are important, they
may primarily benefit me and those close to me. It doesn't have the
same potential to help those who are poor.
5. You’re required to give advice through an informal presentation.
This is a part of the course you are doing at school. Which topic would
you prefer ?
Using a mobile phone properly
Becoming popular on social media
Communicating effectively using chat and text

If I were to choose a topic for an informal presentation as part of my

school course, I would prefer to discuss 'Communicating effectively
using chat and text.' My choice is based on several reasons.

We live in a world where much of our communication happens through

text messages, emails, and chat platforms. Learning how to convey our
thoughts clearly, respectfully, and effectively in written communication
is a skill that can greatly enhance our academic performance and our
interactions with others online.

Many students, including myself, often face challenges when trying to

express themselves through text. We may struggle with maintaining the
right tone, avoiding misunderstandings. Addressing these challenges
head-on can lead to improved academic discussions, better group
project collaborations, and more meaningful online interactions.

While using a mobile phone properly is important, it may not be as

directly relevant to a school course, as it's more about personal
behaviour. Becoming popular on social media is a topic that focuses on
personal social presence and popularity, which might not be the
primary goal of a school course.
6. You’re going to join an art course this summer. Which type of art
would you choose to learn about ?
Drawing or painting
Installation
Sculpture

If I had the chance to attend an art course this summer, I'd opt for
learning about Drawing or Painting. My decision is based on several
reasons.

Drawing and painting are versatile forms of art that offer a wide range
of creative opportunities. They allow you to explore different styles,
techniques, and subjects, making them ideal for someone like me who's
just starting in the art world.

The best part about drawing and painting is that you don't need a lot of
specialised equipment. Basic art supplies like pencils, paper, brushes,
and paints are sufficient to get started. This makes it budget-friendly
and accessible, particularly for beginners.

While installation and sculpture are intriguing, they often require

specific materials and space, which might be challenging for beginners,
especially in a short summer course.
7. You see a boy who is bullied. What will you do ?
Talk to his teacher
Talk to his parents
Talk with his friends
Which do you think is the best way ?

If I were to witness a boy being bullied, the best course of action would
be to talk to the boy's teacher. This approach is effective for several
reasons

Firstly, teachers are typically the closest authority figures within the
school environment, and they have the responsibility to ensure
students' safety and well-being. They can take immediate action to
address the bullying, intervening if necessary, and providing support to
the bullied boy.

Secondly, talking to the teacher maintains a level of confidentiality. The

bullied boy may feel embarrassed or afraid if discussions involve his
parents or friends directly. This way, the teacher can assess the
situation discreetly, ensuring the comfort and safety of the student.

While involving parents is essential in addressing bullying, it might not

be the best initial step because parents might not have immediate
control over the situation within the school. Friends might be hesitant
to report the situation, might not have the authority to intervene, or
might even be involved in the bullying themselves.
8. Your child is addicted to playing computer games. Your family is
considering a family activity to help him give up computer games.
Which is the best choice?
Playing board games
Taking part in outdoor activities regularly
Watching a TV program

In our family, we've been facing the challenge of our child being
addicted to computer games. It's a concern for us, as we want to ensure
a healthy balance between screen time and other activities. To address
this issue, we believe that regularly engaging in outdoor activities as a
family is the best choice.

Firstly, outdoor activities encourage physical exercise, which is essential

for our child's well-being. We want to promote a more active lifestyle.

Secondly, spending time outdoors allows us to connect with nature and

enjoy fresh air. It's a refreshing break from screens and can help reduce
the allure of computer games. Additionally, engaging in outdoor
activities together as a family creates strong bonds and memorable
experiences.

I don't choose board games and watching TV because children still

have time on screen and may be addicted and don't have physical
activities to maintain their health.
9. You will buy a pet for your new house. Which would you buy ?
A cat
A dog
A bird

If I were to choose a pet for my new house, I would opt for a dog. My
decision is based on several reasons.

Dogs are known for their loyalty and companionship. They often form
strong bonds with their owners and provide emotional support and
friendship.

Dogs require regular exercise, which encourages their owners to stay

active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Daily walks and playtime can be
enjoyable for both the dog and its owner.

Many dogs are naturally protective of their homes and families. They
can offer an added sense of security for the new house.

While cats and birds can also make wonderful pets, our family has a
dog before and we don't have any skills to take care of birds, so these
pets will not be suitable for our new house.
