Let’s discover more!

8
Carry out an action with someone!
Stand in front of your partner. Drop a ball on the floor. Ask your partner to tell you
what has happened and ask him/her to begin the sentence with your name.
Ask your partner to underline the subject and circle the verb in his/her sentence.

Let us try another one.

Face your partner. Drop a ball on the floor one more time. Ask your partner to give a
sentence on what has just happened, but this time the sentence will begin with, “ The
ball ….”. Be sure to write the sentence on a piece of paper.

Tell your partner to underline the subject and circle the verb.

What’s New

Let us compare the two sentences below.

1. Robert dropped the ball on the floor.

2. The ball was dropped by Robert.

What is the subject in What is the subject in

the first sentence? the second sentence?

Now the subject in the first sentence is different from the subject in
the second sentence.
9
The subject (Robert) in the first sentence is actively doing the action or
verb (dropped).

However, in the second sentence, the subject (ball) does not do the action
or verb in the sentence. Something is happening to the ball by someone.
That someone is Robert which becomes now the object in the second
sentence.

What then is the voice of the verb in the first sentence?

What is the voice of the verb in the second sentence?

Let’s Try This!

Exercise A. Write the subject and the verb of each sentence. If the subject is the
doer of the action, draw a star ( ) before the number. If the subject is not the
doer, draw a moon ( )

What is It

Remember : of the verb?

What is a voice

The voice of a verb tells us whether the subject is the doer of the action or the receiver of
the action.

Two Voices of Verbs

A. Active voice
> In the active voice, the subject is the doer of the action.
> The sentence becomes stronger.
> Uses few words
What’s More
> Clearly shows who is doing the action.
Example:
The girl throws the ball.
Activity 1
Girl is doing the action (throws). Girl is the subject. Throws is the verb.

B. Passive voice
> In the passive voice, the subject receives the action
> It does not always include who or what is is doing the action.
> The sentence is weaker; less direct.
> “Be” verbs are often used in the sentence. (is, are, am, has, have, had)

11
Example:
The ball was thrown by the girl.
The subject of the sentence is ball. The subject is not doing the verb, was thrown.

The passive tense “formula”

Remember:

 The action verb is in the past participle. This is standard for all use of the
passive voice.
 The be verb can be modified to change tense. For example:

Dinner was eaten / has been eaten / had been eaten etc.

 However, the action verb must remain in the past participle form. It cannot
be expressed in the present participle.
 Thus the rule for the passive voice is:

Object + be + past participle ( + agent )

Active and Passive voice diagram

Active: The kind doctor treated the patient.

(Subject) (Object)

Passive: The patient was treated by the kind doctor.

(Subject) (Object)

Congratulations! You did a great job!

Now you are ready to rewrite an active
voice into a passive voice and a passive
voice to an active voice.
Do you want to know how to do this?
Let us begin to study this!

14
Changing active to
2 passive voice and vice
versa

From active to Passive.

4 Simple steps to follow
Example. More than half of the class speak Iloko.
Step 1. Identify the subject, main verb and the object of the sentence above.
Subject: Half of the class Main Verb: speak Object: Iloko
Step 2. Begin your new sentence with the object of the original sentence to create a
new subject.
Iloko …………………………………………………
Step 3. Identify the verb tense of the new sentence. When changing an active voice to
passive voice, the form of the verb changes. In writing the verb of a passive voice, use
the correct form of the “be” verb and the past participle form of the main verb of the
original sentence.
Iloko is spoken __________________
Here we used is as the “be “ verb because the new subject (Iloko) is singular and the tense
of the main verb (speak) is in the present. The main verb (speak) becomes spoken because
it is the past participle form.

Step 4. Include “by” + old subject or other information if needed.

Original sentence: More than half of the class speak Iloko.

New sentence: Iloko is spoken by more than half of the class.
