Impact of Abortion Bans on Women

The document discusses the Supreme Court decision in June 2022 to overturn Roe v. Wade, removing federal protections for abortion. This has led to over half of US states banning or restricting access to abortion. The document argues that banning abortion does not stop it from occurring but makes it more dangerous, especially for poorer women. Research shows abortion is significantly safer than pregnancy and childbirth. Restricting access to abortion disproportionately harms poorer women and can force them into poverty or unsafe situations. Overall, the document argues that banning abortion infringes on women's rights and does not achieve the goal of reducing abortions.

According to the article “Should Women in the United States Have Access

to Abortion?” in June 2022, the supreme court essentially shut down Roe v

Wade, a law that is responsible for allowing women the freedom to decide

on abortion and keeping a fetus at any point in their pregnancy. This almost

immediate and spontaneous change after so many years came as a

surprise to many and kick started a series of protests for women's rights

and splitting into two groups, pro-life, those who think that abortion should

be completely banned and with little room for exceptions and pro-choice

those who think the right to abortion should be free to all women without

restriction or little to none. The pro-choice is the soundest argument

because banning is taking away a woman's right to her own body and

decisions. Banning abortion does not make it stop. Not only does it not

make it stop it makes it much more dangerous especially for the poorer

women who cannot afford to go out of state or country for an abortion.

women are going to get abortions anyway, whether it is legal, safe, illegal,

or unsafe. Taking away a woman's right to choose is not saving the

fetuses, it is just making women take more drastic measures. For example,

the text says “Prohibiting abortion will not eliminate the practice, advocates

of access assert, but merely force women to resort to risky, illegal, and
even deadly procedures. "Research from around the world has shown that

banning abortion doesn't stop it from happening—it just drives it

underground," (Issues and Controversies - Abortion, 2023) ” Banning

abortions would not bring down the death count of unwanted fetuses, it

would not only bring it upward, but it would become unsafe. Unsafe

abortion means the women getting these abortions would be risking death

just for restrictions that never held up in the first place. The opposing side

of the argument for abortion argues that it is for life and supports human

safety, but it is counterproductive because having an abortion is several

times safer than going through with a pregnancy which is considered safe.

“The maternal mortality ratio—the number of women who die of causes

related to pregnancy—was 20.7 per 100,000 live births. The abortion

mortality rate from 1998 to 2010, on the other hand, was just 0.7 per

100,000 procedures. "Pregnancy is dangerous," Hern wrote. "[A]bortion

can be lifesaving." ," (Issues and Controversies – Abortion , 2023).

Completely disregarding the unsafe or risky pregnancies that women are

going to be forced to carry to term one past the time limits placed, there are

extensive articles out in the world that explain how abortion is safer than

pregnancy on all fronts from future health issues to death and on how

banning abortion does not make it stop.

The majority of Americans do not want abortion to be banned says “A Pew

Research Center poll found in July 2022 that a majority of Americans—57

percent—believed the Supreme Court had erred in its decision, and 62

percent believed abortion should be legal in all or most cases.

Nevertheless, within months after the Court revised its essential holding in

Roe, almost half of U.S. states had banned or broadly restricted access to

abortion”," (Issues and Controversies – Abortion , 2023). America is

supposed to be a democracy which is not only for the people but to protect

the people. So firstly, taking away a woman’s fundamental right to her body

and secondly ignoring the will of the people is not very American and is

proving that we do not have the power in the government as we should, but

it is all to the whims of legislators. This further supports the idea that

abortion bans are just a new way to subjugate and persecute women on

the pretense of protecting a fetus. The article supports this idea, saying “,

anti-abortion activists show little to no interest in improving maternal

mortality rates, fighting childhood hunger, securing clean water for

communities, protecting Black lives, or regulating guns…. This misogyny

will cost the life, health, and freedoms of millions in this country when

implemented. …- Now that the Supreme Court has rightfully returned

decision-making power to democratically elected lawmakers….”," (Issues

and Controversies – Abortion, 2023). It is not up to lawmakers to disrupt

and ignore the constitution which was written by the founders of this

“democracy.” Democracy is meant to separate and fairly distribute powers;

it is clear that the votes and most decision making were already

constructed to be in favor of banning abortions. The article says, “The

Court had tilted to the right since the appointment of three conservative

justices by President Donald Trump (R, 2017–21), and for years legislators

in conservative states had passed laws explicitly designed to push the

Court to reconsider Roe.” ," (Issues and Controversies – Abortion , 2023).

Clearly the people’s opinions never had a chance to begin with since our

rightfully empowered law makers had had their own biases and were

brought in specifically so they can be on the side of “pro-Life.”

The criminalization of abortion significantly affects poorer women in

comparison to women who are well off. The article explains that “women

who were turned away from abortion clinics and carried unwanted

pregnancies to term because of such restrictions "experienced lower rates

of full-time employment, greater poverty, a higher likelihood of continued

violence from the man involved in the pregnancy, more short-term anxiety,

and more serious health complications from pregnancy such as

hemorrhage, eclampsia and even death." ," (Issues and Controversies -

Abortion, 2023). Having a baby in an unwelcome environment is not only

unhealthy for the mom but also the baby. People who have unwanted

children tend to neglect the child or the child ends up in unsafe situations

most of the time. Banning abortions contributes to poverty because it is

unlikely that a woman would be able to manage a full-time job due to risk of

being fired or having a cut in pay, while taking care of an infant healthily.

Only about a few jobs provide maternity leave and even fewer provide paid

maternity leave. Abortions only progress the cycle of poverty, especially for

people who are already poor or struggling to get by in life. The pro-life party

is convinced that there are many options for poor women to help with an

unwanted baby or the baby of a less fortunate family. They say,

“Thousands of crisis pregnancy centers across the United States, they

note, are willing to provide clothes and equipment for infants, financial

assistance and advice for expectant mothers, and information on adoption.”

," (Issues and Controversies - Abortion, 2023). This notion that supplies are

all it takes to raise a baby is only fueling the idea that the effects of abortion

are like everyone else’s experience, but it is not especially for people who

do not want to be parents. Most crisis centers only provide the bare

minimum and many of these spaces only spew false information about how
abortions are dangerous. They specifically target vulnerable communities

as well. This is also not a reliable solution for minorities because adoption

is not as safe for children as many people believe, a lot of children develop

mental illnesses at an early age and become shut in as not all children get

adopted or get adopted by good and caring parents.

Abortion is a significant part of women's rights. It is essential for the safety

of all women and children who will not have the opportunity of living proper

lives like all children deserve. A woman in the United States should be able

to make the decision of whether she wants to or not to carry a baby to term

it is her body, the fourteenth amendment makes talks about the protection

of a woman’s privacy which includes her and her womb.
