Case Study Child Development

Child Family Background

For my case study I was able to witness the development of my younger sister Lorie because I

was the one who took care of her since birth. Lorie, 6 years old girl born on Christmas Day , December 25,

2015, has a brown eyes and a slightly curled hair who is currently studying in her 1st grade. Before entering

into a school , I was the one who teaches Lorie basics knowledge for her age.

Lorie is the youngest in the family. She has five siblings. She usually slept besides her mother.

Every night before sleeping she drinks milk she cant sleep without drinking it. She usually wake up around

five in the morning and had a hobby of waking up everyone in the house. Lorie goes to school at seven in

the morning , her favorite food is chicken nuggets. Her mother sends her to school with her 10 years old

brother and the picks her up around twelve in the afternoon. In her first week she always cries whenever

her mother will leave her side, but after a week she already make some friends and enjoy in their

classroom. Lorie is a talkative girl who always seek for the attention of everyone. She likes dresses and

headbands. Her favourite color is pink and sky blue.

Lorie is from a middle class family. Both her parents are originally from Bacolod City snd

Hiligaynon as their native Language. Her mother is a laborer while her father is a security guard. They had

Lorie at the age of 39. Lorie is closed to her grandmother because every Sunday they will go to visit her

grand mother. Lorie’s best friend and playtime is also her cousins on the father side. They were at the

same age so they really enjoy being with each other. Lorie grows up in a peaceful environment where she

can really enjoy being young. Their neighborhood was surrounded by her close relative that’s why they

enjoy every holiday just like Christmas and New Year also Birthday celebrations.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

Growth

According to Erik Erikson Stages of Psychosocial Development, it focuses on the conflicts we

experiences starting from birth to adulthood. Lorie grew properly during her newborn and toddler years.

Lorie's pregnancy was typical. Loriecel, Lorie's mother, opted to breastfeed her as an infant rather to give

her formula. Lorie accomplished all of the essential milestones as a toddler, including starting to walk at the

age of fifteen months. Lucas continued to mature normally as a toddler to a preschooler, with only one tiny

hiccup. Lorie shattered her first bone when she was two years old while playing in the woods behind her

house with her dogs. She is forty-two inches tall and weighs roughly forty-six pounds at four years old. The

majority of her growth occurred during the toddler years, as it should.

Strength

Lorie can run, jump, walk up and down stairs alone, dress and undress, and use the bathroom on

her own by the age of five. I've seen Lorie run or jump numerous times, whether it's to tackle someone

during roughhousing, to jump on the trampoline, or both while playing with her cousin. Because it took her a

long time, using the restroom is a huge accomplishment for her. She still has to practice jumping and using

scissors. Lorie's physical development is on track.

Areas for future growth

As for my observation, Lorie needed more development in her fine motor skills, such us

coordination with her hands , as I have said Lorie still needs to practice using scissors because without

right coordination it can harm or or worse than that.

School Based Activity

To help Lorie with her fine motor skills school should conduct more activities related to the

improvement of a child coordination between their small muscles just like their wrist and hands.

Home Based Activity

To help Lorie , I suggest that mother should buy her some toys related to cutting that Lorie can

play with her brother or her cousin , but of course still with the guide of the old ones in the house.

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT/ LANGUAGE

Growth

Lorie's cognitive growth is progressing at a normal rate, as is her physical development.

According to Piaget, at the Pre operational stage, the child learns through the use of language. I've

witnessed each of these traits in Lorie throughout her life. She developed through the building blocks of

language, beginning with babbling and progressing to her first word about fifteen months and first phrase a

little later. I don't recall ever being concerned about her growth. She is currently speaking in whole

sentences of various lengths and intents. She adores watching television episodes about princess, and if

given the opportunity, she will spend a significant amount of time, often up to twenty minutes, telling her

listener everything about them.

Strength

Lorie's cognitive development is increasing on a daily basis, and she appears to be on her way

to reaching all the essential benchmarks. Her linguistic skills are improving on a daily basis, and she is

Learning to try new things on her own while keeping in mind that she can always ask for assistance.

Areas for improvement

Even though Lorie excel in using language cognitively at a young age , sometimes she still still

slip up. One time I heard her saying “ I want eat” , It shows that Lorie still needs to learn forming sentences

grammatically correct.

Home Based Activity

One on one talk with Lorie’s mother or sister can be a great help to improve her grammatical

errors.Watching tv shows or movies can also be a big factor to help her.

School Based Activity

There are many activities prepared in school, so I suggest Lorie should be more active on

joining those activities , just like reading or making a short story that can be guided and corrected by her

teacher.

SOCIO-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Growth

During her pregnancy with Lorie, her mother avoided drugs, alcohol, and other substances that

appear to raise the chances of or cause social or personality disorders. The outcome was as anticipated;

Lorie hit all of the essential milestones in infancy and toddler hood. She, for example, could always express

a wide range of emotions. She was fast to display her happiness, grief, bewilderment, or fear to observers.

She also swiftly established a strong bond with her parents, brothers, and friends. Lorie was a child who

needed and wanted to be with her mother and would cry or seek for her if she was separated from her.

Lorie was able to learn that she could trust people after obtaining both of them, allowing her to smoothly

move from toddler hood to the pre -school age.

Strength

According to Albert Bandura’s theory of Social Learning, a child learn through observation. As

per Lorie, she can easily show or express what she feels through the observation in her environment

mainly inside her home. Every time her brother get a scolding she can see that her brother cries, so when

you raise your voice to her unintentionally she will automatically cry.

Areas for improvement

Although Lorie is good in expressing her emotion she still should be aware of the things that

she will going to mimic. She still has to know that not all the things that she is seeing is for her to imitate.

And Lorie also needed to control her feeling especially when she is throwing a tantrums.

School Based Activity

In order for Lorie to have an idea on how to control her feelings or to avoid having tantrums,

Teacher should talk more about her students emotion or situation.

Home Based Activity

Lorie’s parents and siblings should always be aware of their actions and should always talk

calmly and mother or any of them should always explain things to Lorie so that also her can be aware of

the things in her environment.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Growth

Lorie at the age of six already build a relationship with others. Other than her cousins who also

grew her side, she has a lot of friend in school. She always wants to be with them to play , share her toys

and foods. After the day ends, she will always talk about what happened to her day what games they play

and anything about her friends. Lorie is a soft girl that’s why elders always want to with her , she would kiss

you , hug you and all. Lorie always wants an attention from people she likes it when someone is

complementing her dress , her headband and her things. Lorie is a cheerful kid and as he grow socializing

is not that hard for her.

Strength

Lorie as a cheerful kid she can enjoy in a place where she doesn’t know anyone. It was easy for her

to make friends in a short period of time.Well in Lorie’s family everyone in the neighborhood gets along well

and its their norm that everyone should be included and invited if there is an celebration. In accordance to

the theory of Sociocultural Development of Lev Vygotsky, a person cognitive development is largely

influenced by their surrounding. Lorie is largely influenced by the culture that she used to do and able to

apply it to herself.

Areas for improvement

Lorie being a social person can also result to disagreement, Lorie is a very short temper kid

that’s why she still need to improve in resolving conflicts.

School Based Activity

Collaboration is one of the best ways to develop learners socialization. They will get to know

their different opinions that they can also use in everyday basis in life.

Homes Based Activity

Everything start at home, Parent and children should firstly build a good relationship with each

other. Parents can set a 1 day family day to able to know what their children is experiencing outside their

home.

CONCLUSION

Observing my sister's development has taught me a lot about how preschoolers behave and

why they do what they do. I had a great time seeing Lorie grow. I can't say I'm thrilled with how I handled

everything during the project, but I'm satisfied for the most part. I was able to bring the lectures and

information from class to life by determining Lorie's specific characteristics in the areas of physical,

cognitive, language, and socio emotional growth. Because Lorie is my youngest sister, I have been around

Lorie since his birth and have seen her go through growth changes. However, I've heard other family

members complain about how far behind she'll be when she enters school. This assignment allowed me to

see things from a more professional, outside perspective. While I am pleased to learn about Lorie's

progress, I wish I could have observed her at different times and locations. I was able to do a great deal. I

now have a lot better understanding of where a preschool-aged child is cognitively, emotionally, and

physically, and if that is the age group I opt to work with,

I will be better equipped after this . I really appreciated being able to step out of my family position and view

how Lorie is from a different, more professional standpoint if I happen to teach a different grade, I have a

pretty good concept of where the child has been and what he/she has already gone through.
