Imitation Technique for Speaking

This document provides instructions for a speaking practice lesson called "Imitation". The learner will imitate the teacher by repeating introductions as a character named Finn. First, the teacher models introducing Finn and shares details about where he is from and his job. Then the learner repeats the introduction. This process is repeated with slightly different wording each time to keep it interesting. The goal is for the learner to practice speaking skills by imitating the teacher's pronunciation, rhythm and meaning when introducing themselves as Finn.

Unit 2

Lesson 2 – Imitation

Welcome back. In this lesson, you’re going to practice your speaking with the Imitation
technique.

To begin, I want you to listen to me speak. I’m going to pretend to be Finn and introduce myself
as him. You don’t have to imitate me yet. Just listen.

Hi. My name is Finn, and I’m 27 years old. I was born and raised in Chicago, but now I live in
Seattle. I’ve been living here for three years now, and I really love the city.
I work as a cashier at a grocery store that’s only five minutes away from my place. In my free
time, I like to watch movies and play the guitar.

Now, I’m going to say the same thing again. But this time, I want you to repeat after me. Do
your best to sound exactly like me. Copy the exact words I use as well as my rhythm and
pronunciation.

Are you ready? Let’s do it.

Hi. My name is Finn, and I’m 27 years old.

Alright, now it’s your turn to pretend to be Finn and introduce yourself as him. As you learned
from the previous lesson, there are different ways to express the same information, so there’s
no need to use the exact words that I used. Language is flexible, so it’s okay to say things
differently. Pause the video and speak now.

Awesome! Let’s repeat the process one more time. I’m going to give that speech again, but to
keep our practice interesting, some of the sentences will be slightly different this time. Don’t try
to memorize every word I say. Just focus on the meaning.

been living here for about three years now, and I really like it.

Alright, let’s practice Imitation. I’m going to say the same thing again so you can imitate me.

Now, it’s your turn to introduce yourself as Finn one last time. Don’t try to recall the same
words that I used. That’s not necessary. As long as your sentences can be understood, you can
say it however you want. Pause the video and speak now.

Excellent! This is the end of the Imitation lesson. Be sure to repeat the lesson until it becomes
easy for you. Thank you for using our lessons to improve your speaking. I’ll see you next time.
