She was very clever, manipulative, sly and sneaky in accomplishing her desires, and this shows in Act
1, Scene 7, when she became very impatient with Macbeth on his continuous refusal to murder
Duncan. This is when the messengers Ross and Angus arrive to tell Macbeth that he is now Thane of
Cawdor. This contributes to the development of the character by making him make bad decisions
because everything he does is to try and make him feel safe from the last thing he did. An example
of this would be in Act 1 Scene v, when she reads the letter written to her from Macbeth. Macbeth
may not be one of William Shakespeare’s most complex works, but is certainly one of his most
powerful and emotionally intense. Just before Banquo is murdered there is a scene in which we see
the couple hiding from one another, showing that the trust bond between them has broken. An
audience that would witness a play or film that wouldn’t have a ghost visually within it might be
horrified at the way Macbeth would be acting. Although the witches never actually say anything to
Macbeth directly about killing Duncan, they put the idea in his mind. They tell Macbeth his
prophecies: that he will become Thane of Cawdor and then King of Scotland: “All hail Macbeth, that
shalt be king hereafter.” They kindle his ambition by giving him the image of being King of Scotland.

The original audience would have been very shocked to see Macbeth, as king, seeking guidance from
the witches. A director would have to decide whether to in fact show visually the dagger or not. But,
although we can argue that Lady Macbeth perhaps was the real driving force behind the murder of
Duncan, we can also argue that Macbeth had his own personal reasons for killing Duncan. In act 1
scene 7 he talks about his 'vaulting ambition' and this was the only reason why he wanted to kill
Duncan. He murdered his way to the top and defended his position to the last, aiming to withhold
the power he unjustly took. He wants to become King, but he doesn't want to kill Duncan. The

century was to show that the person haunted had something to hide. In Macbeth’s letter to his wife,
he calls her “my dearest partner of greatness” (Act 1, scene v, 8), and later, when he is talking to her
in person, he calls her “My dearest love” (Act 1, scene v, 54). This shows us that Macbeth is not an

these out. Act 1, scene 7 push's the play forwards in many ways. When he hears Lady Macbeth ring

Macbeth may not be one of William Shakespeare’s (1564-1616) most complex plays, but is certainly
one of his most powerful and emotionally intense. This is a sign of Macbeth showing his “butcher”
side of himself.
It is done in such a way that he sees a mirror within a mirror and so on, each of these showing one of
Banquo’s descendants until we come to Banquo himself who is menacingly grinning at Macbeth.

He just got greedier and wanted to take the throne for himself. This was ironic because his wife was

witches and it is prophesised that Macbeth is to be King. Thou wouldst be great, art not without
ambition, but without the illness should attend it’, states Lady Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 5. He made
the decision to kill Banquo without Lady Macbeth’s assistance. He starts as a boisterous almighty
king and is reduced to a paranoid mess. The thanes knock at the gate, and Macduff discovers
Duncan's body when he goes in to wake him up. In Polanski’s version his servants are seen to be
scared of him and when one of them hands in their resignation he throws the letter into the fire
cursing them with riddles of his own. After murdering Duncan, Macbeth’s attitude changes once
again guilt starts to play on his conscience. When the witches give their predictions to Macbeth
about his future, this gives Macbeth the idea that he is indestructible, when the second apparition
says “The power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth”. Macbeth was not content
with his rule and it is perhaps his own self-doubt that leads to his downfall. In Macbeth and lady
Macbeth’s relationship lady Macbeth is the brains behind the killing when she knows about it.
Aristotle was a Greek philosopher, who gave the first version of a tragic hero’s description and
characteristics. I don’t think that this kind of worrying portrayed by Macbeth so far is a sign of a
“butcher”. Macbeth’s servants and lords are deserting him and just to enforce the lack of control he
has, their positions are randomly given out to other lesser men. A director may influence audience
response by creating a Macbeth that either is subtle in believing that he may one day become king if
he plays his cards right or has an already blatant obsession with this idea of becoming king.
Shakespeare used this fascination of witches in Macbeth to get the audience’s beliefs and fears of
witches to create tension within the theatre. Write a review Update existing review Submit review

scenes from the play. This is shown through the first scene with the witch's as he believes in their
prophecy. It is interesting how Roman Polanski in his version of Macbeth shows Banquo sacrificing
himself for his son’s life. As he murders Duncan all sympathy and respect for Macbeth is lost and
although Macbeth has at last achieved his goal of gaining all power, it is also the beginning of his
decline as the Elizabethan sense of order has to be re imposed.
Macbeth tells her that he has made his final decision and will not go through with killing Duncan -
'We will proceed no further in this business'. The three witches and Lady Macbeth all had an

Shakespeare wrote this play). Macbeth takes this as a prophecy that he is dependable. Macbeth shall

Lady Macbeth again criticises him for his weak-mindedness and plants them on the bodyguards

irony of this is that the night before she was not concerned at all, but is now acting as though it is
tragic. In conclusion I believe that the quote from Malcolm, “A dead butcher and his fiend-like
queen”, is not an entirely accurate representation of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, contrary to my
initial thoughts. He is in his room, contemplating the weighty and evil step of killing Duncan. This is
Macbeth’s attempt to get more information out of the witches. We see the ambition of one man alone
whose lust for power drives him to despair and murder. Macbeth decides that he must revisit the
witches to hear more of the future. Each one builds on Macbeth’s despair and the language and
structure of this passage displays Macbeth’s feelings. This past character of Macbeth is in conflict
with his new character that Lady Macbeth has manipulated into a cold calculated killer. For a
number of his plays including Macbeth he turned to a historian (Raphael Holinshed) for information.
