CHAPTER 4
Discussion
This chapter discussed the result, conclusion, and recommendation of
reading comprehension and its significant relationship to academic
performance of grade 10 students of Atty. Orlando S. Rimando National High
School.
Summary of the findings
The main problem and objective of the study was to identify the
relationship of both variables which were reading comprehension and
academic performance. The study has been conducted at Atty. Orlando S.
Rimando National High School with a respondents of grade 10 students. The
result of the data’s that have been calculated tells that there is a significant
relationship between reading comprehension and academic performance of
grade 10 students.
The result of the study was supported by the study of Woolley (2011),
reading comprehension is the process of making meaning from text. The
goal is to gain an overall understanding of what is described in the text
rather than to obtain meaning from isolated words or sentences. It is also
supported by Horowitz (2014) reading comprehension is a complex
cognitive process that the reader must also be intentional and thoughtful
while reading, monitoring the words and their meaning as the reading
progresses. So, they do not only read the text but also they can get the
meaning and are able to construct the sentences.
As cited by Mutchar (2015), A basic instructional result is attitude
toward reading. Reading experts now understand the importance of attitudes
in reading. It is obvious that attitudes are important considerations and factors
in reading. There could be being predisposed to act in a way that is either
positive or negative toward someone group, establishment, circumstance, or
thing. Of course, they are closely tied to however, interests are frequently
considered to represent larger, more generic sensations.
A student's reading ability indicates that they have the potential or
capacity to read. the ability to decipher or derive meaning from textual
material. Thus, the capacity to read is a skill. required for people to function
and succeed in school. Reading skill is very important for students to
understand because facts are offered and made available throughout the text
world (Kudo & Bazan, (2013).
In addition, According to Hanzon et al. (2021), student and staff ratings
of school facilities are highest in elementary and high schools, but there is
substantial variation across schools. Ratings of the quality of school buildings
and facilities are lowest in schools with greater percentages of African
American and Latinx students and schools with higher levels of
socioeconomic diversity. Schools with lower levels of Asian and white
students and those who are eligible for free/reduced-price meals were found
to have the least positive school climate. These schools also exhibited higher
chronic absentee rates, suspension rates, and levels of student- and staff-
reported violence victimization.
Lastly, Dabarera et al. (2014) and Ghafournia (2014) suggest that
reading strategies should be taught explicitly in order to make students aware
of them and their effectiveness, and enhance students’ confidence in reading
and motivation to learn on their own. Ahmadi and Ismail (2012) claim that the
explicit teaching of reading strategies is a solution to the problem of poor
reading comprehension skills. Explicit guidance and explicit instructional
techniques (like questioning, predicting, making inferences, and summarising)
make a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension by
helping them to apply reading strategies in reading classes. Reading
instruction should start from the word-level activity to help students make
connections between decoding words in a text and understanding the
meaning of it as a whole (Yeh et al., 2012).
Conclusion
The accumulated and analyzed data enabled the researchers to
construct the study's conclusion. The first problem, resulted that the level of
reading comprehension of grade 10 students of Atty. Orlando S. Rimando
National High School was interpreted as high. In the second problem, the
overall mean for the indicator of academic performance was interpreted as
very satisfactory. Lastly, for the third problem, the study resulted that there is
a significant relationship between reading comprehension and the academic
performance of grade 10 students.
Recommendation
The fact that the study resulted to a significant relationship between the
two variables gives great impact to the studies having a variable reading
comprehension and academic performance. In addition, it resulted in a
significant relationship but there was only an enough force in both variables
leads them to become significantly related.
To enhance the students reading comprehension may goodly affect
their academic performance in school. Specifically, to the factors of reading
comprehension were students’ attitude toward English comprehension,
Students’ reading abilities and strategy use, students’ perception of facilities
and resources, and students’ attitudes toward reading instruction and
teaching strategies.
The parents may encourage their children and support them in all
aspects that may affect their performance in school. Thus, the students will be
motivated and active in doing reading performance.
The teachers must be the tool of the students in learning in school. For
they were the one who will mold the students based on their way of teaching.
Their teachings could be the basis of the reading comprehension of the
students.
Future researchers are encouraged to conduct the study to cover a
wide range of reading comprehension strategies that suit students’ levels and
individual differences. Since research studies examining the link between
students’ reading comprehension and their achievement in English are rare,
further research in this area is in need, particularly in response to the ever-
changing needs of students, hence, are encourage also to seek other factors
in conducting the study. Geographically speaking, they are also encouraged
to conduct the study in the other area of Municipality, Province, Region, or
places where they feel the urgency upon.
