How have services such as Netflix impacted society?
Internet, which is an integral part of nowadays world, was popularized in the nineties. “As of January
2021, there were 4.66 billion active internet users worldwide - 59.5 percent of the global
population.”
Since then, people have been able to watch online as well. From then on, you could see your beloved
programs only until they were broadcast. Usually, it was difficult to find your program on some
websites back then. Many of the programs that were added to the Internet were not translated,
which had some advantages. Generation Z out of curiosity about their program watched it without
subtitles, which causes them to learn a specific language.
This was when streaming services appeared. By the Oxford Dictionary, a streaming service is a service
that sends video, over the internet so that people can watch or listen to it immediately rather than
having to download it, or rather than having to watch at a particular time when something is
broadcast.
Nowadays, people more and more leave cable television for streaming services. It is commonly
known that some young people own TV devices only for this purpose.
HBO was originally a TV channel, but in 2010 it became more and more popular as a service but was
not as popular. Then Netflix revolutionized the streaming platforms. In 2016, it became popular all
over the world. As in this time, more and more people were leaving cable TV in favour of streaming
services. The latest streaming service is Disney +, Amazon Prime, or Apple TV +.
In the modern world, people spend their time relaxing and forget about the life that surrounds them.
Netflix has its popular phrase "Netflix and chill" which means spending time at home with Netflix
playing in the background. It has become such a dangerous reason that people no longer watch only
one episode a week, they swallow the whole series even in a few days. For this reason, a new term
has been created - binge-watching.
Watching the series causes identification with the heroes of these productions, their experiences,
and emotions, which causes emotional compassion. There is a connection between binge-watching
and depression, loneliness, and the inability to control one's life.
As a result, watching Netflix also leads to a lack of free time to do responsibilities like cleaning the
house, doing homework, or going to work just to stay in and disappear from this world for one day.
It tends to lack interpersonal communication as well. People stay just to watch Netflix, and couples
that were supposed to go out on dates stay home to drink and eat without talking to each other.
Even when people escape to the countryside without any access to the internet to relax, they can
watch offline - downloading one episode takes only a few seconds. It has become our undoing.
Digital generations have been in contact with technology since childhood, cutting themselves off
from the world around them. That’s why they are so used to it. Usually, people are aware of their
excessive use of these services, but they still do so to distract from everyday difficulties. People need
to use it in moderation, but addiction in this case is inevitable.
