At the end of this module, the student should be able to:

LEARNING CONTENTS : Overview of Personality
Personality Definition
• Is the sum total of the qualities and characteristics of a person shown in his ATTITUDES, INTERESTS,
and WAYS OF REACTING TO OTHER PEOPLE.
• The word PERSONALITY comes from the Latin word “PERSONA” that means
“MASK”. It is what people project and display which includes the inner areas
of physiological experience which we collectively call as OUR “ SELF”.
• It is the essence of over totality as an individual.
• It is a reflection of our childhood, our aspiration, our experiences and our mind.
• Encompasses not just physical being but also includes the INTELLECTUAL, MORAL, SPIRITUAL,
EMOTIONAL,AND PHYSIOLOGICAL STATE as well.
PERSONALITY
• plays an important role in the LIFE and FATE of an individual
• It tells how a person will opt to face his everyday challenges in life
• A HEALTHY PERSONALITY therefore will assure SUCCESS IN A MAN’S BEHAVIOR.
• An INTELLIGENT human being is one who keeps learning.

Components of Personality
• PHYSICAL – this includes the mode of DRESSING, MANNER OF WALKING, POSTURE, BUILD,
HEALTH, COMPLEXION AND FACIAL EXPRESSION.
• INTELLECTUAL- how a person TALKS, and WHAT HE/SHE TALKS ABOUT is what matters in
intellectual component of personality. He/she must develop his/her intellect or brain.
• SOCIAL COMPONENT - GOOD MANNERS, CORRECT MANNERS are included in this aspect of
personality. To do THINGS at the right time, to act in proper manner, to get along well with others -
these are all parts of social sphere of personality.
• EMOTIONAL- includes a person’s LIKE and DISLIKES, whether she is out going or shy, calm or
nervous whether she loses her temper easily or “ keeps her cool “. Personality problems, such as how
to say mentally healthy or how avoid mental disorders are some problems that emotional in nature.
• VALUE SYSTEM - this includes a person’s attitude, values, beliefs, and philosophy in life. This aspect
referred to as “ CHARACTER”. It is shown in the way we judge whether our actions are right or wrong.
Factors Affecting Personality Differences
1. HEREDITY
• The most important factor that decides what a person will be like.
• Heredity influences our nervous system and affects the person’s mental; development. It is also
considered as a strong factor affecting personality development.
• Aptitude- pattern or traits needed for learning in a particular task
• Ability- the power to do the task.
• “Aptitudes in inherited while abilities are acquired through correct practice”.
2. ENVIRONMENT
• A person behavior is also learned from his environment – the people and the things around him/her.
Personality formation starts in primary groups.
• The chief primary groups are the family, playmates, and neighboorhood friends. School, church, and
other small social units may also be included.
• The roles we play are either two kinds: assigned and acquired..
• ASSIGNED ROLES- are those we have no control over.
• ACQUIRED ROLES- we have a choice.
3. EXPERIENCES
• These consist of everything we do or get in touch with, everywhere we got in short, everything that we
are exposed to in our lifetime, whether physical, emotional or social experiences.
• SOCIAL INTERACTION- is the give and take process through w/c human beings affect one another's
behavior.
• Culture sets a pattern of behavior for you leading or supporting participant on the stage and even as
listener or onlooker among audience.

Achieving improved and pleasant personality
“ FIRST IMPRESSION ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT PART OF EVERYDAY CONTACTS”
• The people you meet, the place you go, the things you do all through your life are affected by first
impression of you and by you. If you create unfavourable impression on other people, you are usually
left in the background. It is important that you keep your best foot forward at all times, in order to sure
that you do create a favourable first impression in every instance.
• Personality is improved like most thing-through correct practice.
• Personality is the product of native being as it is molded and developed by experiences and influences.
• Your personality can be immeasurably improved by study, by cultivation of positive characteristics and
personal control of emotions. There are two prime factors to keep in mind:

Ways to Become Interesting
1. Learn something new, something that was not yours yesterday. Store new ideas in your mind.
2. Absorb new knowledge. TAKE YOUR DAY’S LESSON AS A SOURCE OF NEW AND RICH
information of new experiences and new lessons in right living.
3. Acquire new skill that will give you techniques in doing constructive work, w/c minimize, if not entirely
eliminate waste and error.
4. Discover new sights, new sounds, new scents from your environment that will enrich your life and
make of living an entirely interesting experience.
5. Envision what you would wish to be in the future. READING is the BEST preparation for happy life
ahead. READ! READ ! READ!

SUMMARY
Personality Development is one of the most important aspect in human venture. It is linked with success
or failure of the human beings. Hospitality industry deals with taking care of the needs of the public and thus it
is important for all those people who work in this sector to focus on building the right personality that would
empower them succeed there. Without this, it would trigger to dissatisfaction of customers.
The hospitality industry provides various unique and interesting processes that individuals go through to
develop certain attitudes, attributes or behaviour. Everyone has his or her own experiences in life that falls out
their views about the world and the way in which they discern things around them. The hospitality Industry
provides personality development to their staff which would help in contributing to the success or failure of the
business.
