The Engineering Procedures are the standard for Engineering work throughout Gas Business.
Engineers responsible for the supervision of such work are required to use their experience and judgement
when interpretation of the Engineering Procedures is necessary.
Where the introduction of new methods or particular circumstances necessitate changes to be made in the
Engineering Procedures, such changes should initially be authorized by the Regional Director of Engineering
who will advise the Head of Engineering, Regional Services at Headquarters accordingly.
The Engineering Procedures are intended for use by British Gas and if they are used where British Gas is not
involved then care shall be taken to ensure that the Engineering Procedures are correctly applied.
Compliance with the Engineering Procedures does not confer immunity from compliance with any legal or
statutory obligations.

BRIEF HISTORY
All new and revised Modules of the Gas Business Engineering Procedures (formerly the Code of Practice for
Distribution) are to be published as bound editions. Existing loose-leaf Modules will be replaced by bound
editions as they become due for updating. Modules will continue to be 4-hole drilled for retention in existing
binders, and will also indicate the latest change (except for complete
revisions by the use of marginal rules/arrows.

SPECIFICATION FOR
GAS BUSINESS ENGINEERING PROCEDURES
SECTION 0 - INTRODUCTION
1. SCOPE
This Section 0 of the Engineering Procedures gives basic information relating to Modules comprising the
Engineering Procedures*. This information includes:
d) Definitions of terms used in the Procedures, which may or may not be repeated in individual
Modules.
e) The level of competence required in the application of the Procedures, and how such
competence should be obtained.
2.1 The Procedures cover a wide range of activities associated with gas engineering practice. They are
divided into eight Sections (see Table 1). Each self-contained unit is termed
a ‘Module’.
2.2 The word ‘Distribution’ is being replaced by the word ‘Engineering’ throughout the Procedures,
reflecting changes occurring throughout Gas Business. The generic title ‘Code of Practice for Distribution’ is
therefore being phased out, and the title ‘Engineering Procedures’ will be phased in. The designations
GBE/DIS... will be retained until further notice.
3. MODIFICATIONS TO MODULES
3.1 General
3.1.1 Modules are reissued as bound editions whenever changes are made to the text. Old editions which
are currently loose-leaf will be reissued as bound editions when they are next updated.
3.1.2 A list of the current editions of individual Modules will be found in GBE/SP2** which is reissued
every three months.
a) a vertical rule spanning two or more consecutive lines of text indicates that textual change(s)
have occurred on those lines;
b) a horizontal arrow indicates that the line to which the arrow is pointing has been changed.
Where changes have been made to an illustration, the vertical rule or arrow may not always identify the
‘precise’ area of change.
Marginal rules/arrows applying to one issue of a Module are repeated in the next issue of the Module only if
the original area of change has again been subjected to change.
4. DEFINITIONS
Engineer: a competent engineer appointed to be responsible for the application of all or part of the
Procedures.
Engineer’s representative: a suitably qualified and experienced person acting on behalf of the
Engineer.
NOTE - The term ‘Supervisor’ occurs in some of the older Modules. This should be construed as
meaning ‘Engineer’s representative’.
5. COMPETENCE
The following statement will eventually be incorporated in all Modules:
All persons engaged in the design, construction, commissioning, operating, maintenance and
alteration of mains, services and related plant shall be competent to carry out such work. This may
be achieved by an appropriate combination of education, training and practical experience.
