Operating instructions IVS–Euro Croyden III

IV Operating instruction IVS-Euro Croyden
1. INTRODUCTION

The Basic Vehicle Set (BVS) is a set of vehicle equipment consisting of a Driver Panel (BC2100), a VE-
COM-Combo unit, a transponder and associated cables. The BVS-Euro is operated by the driver panel
which is installed in the cabinet within reach of the driver. Using the driver panel the driver can execute
the following operations:
 display information;
 input data;
 use VECOM manual operation.

The aim of these instructions is to serve as a textbook and reference work for the drivers’ training officer.

A number of the BVS-Euro functions and texts are project/client dependent. However, the way in which
the BVS-Euro is operated is simple and does not dependent on the specific functions.

Chapter 2 describes the system characteristics and the way in which a number of functions work. Chapter
3 describes the procedure which has to be followed at the beginning and end of the service. Chapter 4
provides a description of the way in which the driver panel has to be operated in general. Chapter 5 de-
scribes the functions of all menu keys in detail, while chapter 6 describes the instructions for daily use as
briefly as possible.

The values which the driver can enter depend, in a number of cases, on the infrastructure of the transport
company (for example: line numbers, destination display, etc.).

2. SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS

For a good understanding of the range of control operations this chapter deals with the system characteris-
tics in more detail.

2.1. SWITCHING ON CHARACTERISTICS

2.1.1. Switch on after installation

After installation of the driver panel, or after loading the new software in the driver panel, the system will
display the following messages during start-up:

The driver panel now reads the configuration data from its
Initialising system: flash-disk. The language files of the software are not loaded
Loading database in this stage which means that these messages are always
in English.

In the next stage the driver panel reads the user interface
Initialising system: (User InterFace – UIF) from the flash-disk.
Loading UIF

Finally the driver panel resports that the initialisation proce-

System start dure has completed.
Press Enter

Press the [Enter] or [Reset] key. Soon after this the idle text apprears on the display. The vehicle equipment
is now operational.

It is also possible that system messages appear on the display instead of the idle text. After reading
each message press [Enter] or [Reset] until the idle text appears.

When the PVP24 signal is not connected to the permanent 24 V of the vehicle system, the system
will always perform this initialisation procedure after it has been switched off for more than a few
minutes.

3.1. DISPLAY

The display can show three lines of text. The most important information is displayed on the top line, while
the center and bottom lines are used for displaying more detailed information. In darkness the display is
illuminated from behind (backlight). The strength of this lighting is controlled automatically depending on
the ambient light. The information which is shown on the display depends on the status of the system at
that moment. We distinguish the following conditions:
 the idle condition;
 the interactive condition.

Special display symbols

The display can show the following special symbols, also see figure 2:

The over-loop symbol is displayed for as long as the vehicle with the transponder is located above
a VECOM or VETAG loop. When this symbol is displayed communication with a loop of a roadside
station is in progress. The over-loop symbol disappears when the vehicle has left the loop.

The manual operation symbol is displayed if one or more settings deviate from the standard set-
tings. The manual operation symbol disappears when all equipment is being operated automati-
cally. For this use the [Defaults] key, see paragraph 5.4.2.

In the idle condition the display shows information which is important for executing the service run.

The top line shows:

 the time;
 the word ’Start’ when a ready to RTS code is queued for transmission;
 an arrow indicating the manual direction code (left, straight or right);
 over loop symbol.
This symbol indicates that the vehicle is presently over a communication loop.

The center line is blank.

The bottom line shows:

the line number, the route number and the category.
The route number is displayed following the setting of a route, either manually (see paragraph NO TAG)
or automatically following receipt of a trip-start message. If the route number is undefined the route
coded field is blank.

3.1.2. Display in the interactive condition

The system enters the interactive condition by calling up a menu. The information which is displayed for
each menu is clear and complete and self-explanatory. In a number of menu’s data from a list is displayed.
A number will also be displayed for the relevant component on such a list in order to make quick selection
possible for the regular user. For example: for a list of stops the stop number will also be displayed next
to the stop name.

Driver Panel

3.2. KEYBOARD

The keyboard of the driver panel is a flat panel on which a number of so-called touch keys are identified
in relief and printing. The keyboard is shown in figure 1.

Below is a description of the keys:

 VECOM manual operation keys

The VECOM manual operation uses the following keys:
 Direction keys ← ↑ →
 RTS key

The direction keys are used for the manually operated direction request for the next VECOM or VETAG
loop. If another direction key is pressed then the last direction which was selected will be requested
when passing a VECOM or VETAG loop. The manually operated direction request is cancelled by
pressing the [Reset] key.

The [RTS] key is used to send a start message to the next VECOM or VETAG loop. The start message
is automatically cancelled after leaving this loop or by pressing the [Reset] key.

 Logon menu
The [Logon] key opens the menu in which the data for the service to be executed has to be entered.

 Panel settings
The settings for the driver panel can be set to your own requirements using this menu.

 Menu/Numeric keys
In the idle condition a menu can be selected using the menu/numeric keys. If you are in a menu in which
a number can or has to be entered then these keys will operate as numeric keys.

If you are in a menu, the menu function is blocked and it is only possible to enter numerically.

If you are in a menu the following keys can be used to search for data, to delete, to skip or to confirm.

 Browse keys
After a menu has been selected the first function of the menu appears on the display. In a number of
functions the browse keys can be used to make a new selection, for example a new destination.

 Delete key
If you are in a menu you can use the [Delete] key to delete the last number entered.

 Reset key
Using the [Reset] key you can exit a menu early. The original data, such as that which was valid before
the relevant sub-menu was selected, will remain valid. Values which have already been confirmed will
not be reset.

 Enter key
The [Enter] key is used to confirm the selection displayed or the value entered. As a result of this a sub-
sequent sub-menu will be called up or, after the last sub-menu, the system will go to the idle condition.

Driver Panel

3.3. SOUND

The driver panel can produce a beep tone. The pitch of the tone is fixed and always the same. The length
of the beep can be short or long, depending on the function.

 Short beep
A short beep is produced to confirm that a key has been pressed and if an invalid key has been pressed.
When pressing an invalid key you will hear two short beeps, one immediately after the other; one to
confirm that the key has been pressed and one to indicate that an invalid key has been pressed. The
volume of the beep is adjustable. The beep for confirming that the key has been pressed can be
switched off via the panel settings.

 Long beep
A long beep is produced to make you aware of spontaneous messages. The volume of this beep is not
adjustable.

4. GENERAL OPERATION

This chapter provides a general operating description. It is the intention that this chapter serves as a refer-
ence work for the execution of a function. A number of examples are given in this chapter on the basis of
theoretical functions.

4.1. EXECUTING A FUNCTION

The functions which can be executed using the driver panel are contained in menu’s. For the execution
of a function the associated menu must first be selected for which a number of menu keys are available.

Figure 3. Driver panel

Selecting a menu and executing a function is done in the same way for all functions. A general description
of the way in which this is done is given below.

1 Press a menu key

After pressing a menu key the first function of the selected menu will appear on the display. The first
line gives a description of the function and the second line gives a value or additional information.

2 Function
What you can do now depends on the selected function. Some functions show all values. In that case
you can end the function using the [Enter] or [Reset] key. There are functions where a number can or
must be entered. This is undertaken using the numeric keys, see section 4.2. In addition to this there
are functions where you have make a selection from a list, for example ON or OFF. This selection is
made using the browse keys, see section 4.3. In a number of menu’s you can also use the quick select
option, see section 4.4., to jump immediately to a specific position in the list of selections. Both the selec-
tion and the position in the list of selections are shown on the display.
If a ”=” sign appears in front of the current value then the value is fixed in the system and only the value
will be shown. If there is a ”:” sign in front of the current value then you can enter a new value in one
of the ways indicated. Example:

Operating instructions BVS-Euro 11

General Operation

Driver id: 123456

After ending a function a further function can also appear. After the last function the idle text will be dis-
played.

3 End / exit
Using the [Enter] key the value which is entered or the selection which is made will be confirmed. This
will also close the (sub-)menu. If you do not wish to proceed with the menu selected or the current func-
tion then you must press the [Reset] key. This will exit the selected menu. The values which you have
accepted so far in any sub-menu’s will remain valid.

4.2. NUMERIC INPUT

Numeric input means entering a number. It is used in the following situations:

 entering a numeric value;
 quick selection from a list.

After selecting specific functions you are asked to enter a number. A text then appears on the display fol-
lowed by the current value or ”:_” if there is still no value. You can now enter a value using the numeric
keys. If you enter an incorrect value you can undo this by pressing the [Delete] key. The last number you
entered will then be deleted. Multiple numbers can be deleted by pressing the [Delete] key multiple times.
Entering a number has to be confirmed by pressing the [Enter] key.

Service information
Line number: 12_

Figure 4. Numeric input

Once you have confirmed the number the next function will appear on the display.

If the entered number is invalid for the system a beep will sound and an error message will appear on the
display. In that case press the [Enter] or [Reset] key in order to confirm that you have read the error mes-
sage. The original value will then appear on the display, after which you can enter a new value.

Incorrect value entered

Try again

Figure 5. Error message after entering an illegal value

General Operation

4.3. BROWSING

For a number of functions you can enter a new value using the browse keys. In this case the current setting
will appear on the display first. If you can also use the quick selection option for this function (see section
4.4.) then the current numeric value will also appear on the display. You can then browse through the list
of options and confirm your selection by pressing the [Enter] key when the required value appears on the
display.

In a number of cases you can only choose from a few values, for example ON or OFF. In that case the
list is cyclic.

When you are browsing through a list which is not cyclic and you are at the beginning or end of the list then
you will hear a beep. This is shown schematically in the following figure.

Manufacture

Research
Light: Off
Documentation
Light: On
Commercial

Installation
NON-CYCLIC LIST CYCLIC LIST
Figure 6. Different types of lists

Example:
Imagine that you have selected the fictitious list “light”. This function displays the current value “light” and
offers you the option of changing the value. The display now shows:

Light: Off

The “:” sign indicates that this is an adjustable value. Using the browse keys you can view the available
values, for example:

Light: On

By pressing the [Enter] key you select the ON value.

Operating instructions BVS-Euro 13

General Operation

4.4. QUICK SELECTION

For a number of functions for which you have to select a new text by browsing you can also jump through
the list of selections by using the quick select option. You can use both options side-by-side.

Using quick selection you can jump immediately to a position within the list by entering the position number.
The procedure you have to follow for quick selection is given below:

1 Enter a position number

Using the numeric keys you can enter a number (= position number). This position number is a function-
al value, and not by definition the sequence in the list. For example the position number in the stop list
is the stop number.

2 Press the [Enter] key

Once a valid position number has been entered and you have pressed the [Enter] key the new position
number and the associated selection from the list will be displayed. If required you can enter another
position number or browse through the list (see step 3). If the entered value is invalid you will hear a
beep and the original selection will be shown on the display.

3 Browse to the required selection

If the correct selection is still not shown then you can search for the correct selection using the browse
function.

4 Press the [Enter] key

In order to enter the selection which is being displayed you should press the [Enter] key for confirmation.

Example:
Imagine that you have selected the fictitious function ”department”. The function shows the current depart-
ment selected and you can now browse through a list of departments in order to select a new department.
The current selection appears on the display:

Purchasing

If you wish to selected the ”Transport” department and you know that the associated number is ”1052” then
you can enter that number:

1052

When you press the [Enter] key the associated text will appear on the display:

Transport

By pressing the [Enter] key the ”Transport” department will now be entered.

5. DRIVER PANEL KEYS

5.1. VECOM MANUAL OPERATION KEYS

The VECOM manual operation uses the following keys:

 RTS key
 Direction keys ← ↑ →

It is also possible to execute VECOM manual operation using switches (for the direction), the (RTS) push
button and the indication on the dashboard (over-loop indication). In that case the direction keys and the
RTS key on the driver panel are blocked.

5.1.1. RTS key

At specific locations the driver can send a Ready-to-start (RTS) message to the VECOM loop in order to
indicate to the trackside equipment which has to start a specific process. The RTS message is often used
to indicate to trackside equipment the end of a stop and initiate the appropriate action (e.g. request access
to a road crossing). The RTS message can be sent to an IWS unit by pressing the [RTS] key. In the idle
condition the display of the word ’Start’ shows that the RTS message is ready to be sent to a loop. The
RTS message may be cancelled via the [Reset] key prior to it being sent at the next loop detected. The
RTS message can no longer be cancelled once the vehicle is over a loop. As soon as the RTS message
has been received by an IWS unit the word ’Start’ disappears from the display.
