Tight Corners
Eddie stared intently at the tri-deo screen, watching the progress of the racing team he was sponsoring as they
rushed through the tight corners of Boyce Canyon. Kaya and Zella, the team’s two racers, had been pushing the limits
of the company’s top line Gears every day for hours on end. Every time Zella made a turn, Eddie’s stomach sunk as he
wondered if she would wreck her Jerboa into the walls. Zella already had a horrific accident during the testing phase
of the Jerboa, and since then Eddie, normally a self-described flamboyant daredevil, turned into a nervous wreck any
time she raced. Eddie told himself he had no reason to be worried about the test pilot; but he knew that was only a lie.
Sitting next to him in the VIP lounge, Isaac Verton watched the race with clinical precision. Issac was Eddie’s business
partner and best friend, but didn’t comprehend the human component of racing like he did. For the GREL, the race
was a test of the machine and nothing more, but for Eddie racing was an expression of human accomplishment.
Racing was about the thrill of speed and the risks that came with a high speed turn or an extreme jump. For Eddie,
racing made life more vibrant and fulfilling; at least when Eddie was the one in the driver’s seat. There was a part of
him that really wanted to get back into racing again, but age had started to slow down his reflexes. Eddie’s experience
told him that losing to some two-bit upstart punk would wound his pride; and he wasn’t willing to gamble that away
just yet.
Watching Zella whip her Red and White Jerboa past her team-mate Kaya and take the lead in the race, Eddie wondered
if he had made a mistake by sponsoring the race and his company’s team. He winced as the screen was engulfed
in a brilliant fireball; another team’s Jerboa had fired its jump jets damaged in a previous impact with the result a
spectacular explosion.
“Tell me again why we’re sponsoring this race?” Eddie asked Isaac, quickly following the question by finishing off a
glass of bourbon he had been nursing since the start of the race.
His partner of twenty six cycles looked over and shrugged, “I believe you said it was advertising. But you had said
before that you were glad that we were not racing in the Deathtrack series any more. I had wondered why you had
changed your mind.”
Eddie sighed as he looked down at his empty glass. What had prompted him to sponsor this crazy race? The downcast
and defeated looks Zella and Kaya gave him after Deathtrack’s commission banned his company - and its signature
Gear was the real reason. Eddie couldn’t deny the pair the joys he had felt racing.
He still remembered the night when Zella had regained consciousness at the Prince Gable hospital after the accident
during the trial run of the Jerboa prototype. Zella had smiled at him through the pain and thanked him for letting her
feel the thrill of the ride again. The usually taciturn GREL pilot, who normally had such a hard time feeling ‘human’,
knew exactly how he felt when he raced. Taking racing away from her would be robbing Zella of the only time she
could really feel alive. As a fellow racer, Eddie knew he couldn’t deny her that feeling.
Looking back to the screen, Eddie’s face broke into a small smile as he realized that Zella and Kaya were going to win
the race. Glancing over to Isaac, he stated “I guess I just can’t get away from it. I’m too programmed to be a part of
racing.”
Issac responded “I did not realize you were hypnotrained like me...” His face twisted into confusion as he murmured
“Yes, that makes sense”.
Eddie started laughing at his partner’s misunderstanding, “Yeah. Totally got hypnotrained.”

Operation Long Night & NuCoal
1
hidden history: operation long night & nucoal
Since its establishment after the War of the Alliance, Port Arthur has enjoyed a uniquely close relationship with
the Humanist Alliance. This friendship began in the early TN1920s when Gavin Hypolite, the Humanist preceptor
assigned as ambassador to Port Arthur, established a personal friendship with Colonel Arthur. Under the pretense
of regular diplomacy, Hypolite was covertly seeking aid to further the Humanist’s Free Alliance movement; namely
gaining sovereignty from the Southern Republic. The disruption of the War of the Alliance undid centuries of his
predecessors’ work, but Port Arthur was a new means to the grand plan penned by Illuminatus Hysert, in TN1681.
If Operation Long Night—the Humanist plot to overthrow Republican control—was to succeed, certain criteria had to
be met. The first was military R&D out of the purview of the SRA. The second, more challenging criteria, was military
expansion. The Humanist Alliance commoner class is routinely subject to non-aggression and passivity programming.
This control mechanism is designed to keep the populace pliant and under control, but prevents the Humanists from
drawing conscripts from its broader population during times of war. While limited emergency programming was
instituted during the War of the Alliance to deal with this unintended consequence, the results were far from ideal.
Once a commoner was deprogrammed, the subliminal pacifist programming was nearly impossible to reintroduce.
Many surviving commoners ended up in the notorious Legion of Lead, a dumping ground for malcontents and
societal rejects designed with the purpose of providing the Humanist Alliance with semi-disposable troops.
Hypolite’s relationship with Colonel Arthur provided several avenues to achieve both criteria of Operation Long Night.
By the early TN1920s, Hypolite had secured access to PAK’s CEF hover technology in exchange for the delivery
of replacement parts as well as assistance in building the manufacturing base of Port Arthur. Two Humanist shell
corporations were established in the outer counties of the PAK defense zone in order to develop and prototype new
weapon systems and vehicles. Javelin Strategic Industries provided the manufacturing facilities and workforce for
its sister corporation Vulcan Engineering Consortium, which provided the lab space for Humanist engineers and
scientists to work side by side with PAK technicians on design and development.
The first project completed was the Hetarois Hovertank; designed and manufactured in under three cycles, the joint
venture quickly proved its worth. By TN1928 the prototype Hetarois was running operational tests alongside PAK
forces disguised as a Prowler hover tank. The following cycle, Alliance scientists and engineers unveiled a ‘new’
hovertank based on captured CEF technology. The public variation of the Hetarois lacked a number of advancements
included in the original version such as CEF thrusters and energy-based weaponry, so as to keep the true performances
hidden from Republican operatives. The Southern Republic Army was consequently quite surprised by the Hetarois’
true capacities when they laid siege to White Rock, the Humanist’s center for R&D and military manufacturing.
During the early TN1930s, the collaboration between Port Arthur and the Humanist Alliance focused on infrastructure
planning and mapping for the region. Hypolite was authorized to provide technical expertise on city layout and
projections for future growth as the Humanists saw Port Arthur as a potential fall-back position in the event their league
was overrun. In addition, Port Arthur had the potential to be a military deterrent protecting Humanist independence
once Operation Long Night came to fruition. Though the final outcome could not be predicted by the preceptors, Port
Arthur—and by extension NuCoal—has become the most crucial ally to the struggling Humanist Alliance.
After the near annihilation of the preceptor caste during the Theban Blight, surviving leaders of the preceptor and
protectorate castes rushed plans and prototypes to Port Arthur. Manufacturing facilities set up prior to TN1936
played a crucial role in providing materials to the HAPF throughout the Inter-Polar War, and the open alliance between
NuCoal and the Humanist Alliance in the post-war cycles has helped the Humanists recover.
The greatest hurdle facing the allies remains the vast distances separating them. With no major lines of transportation
between NuCoal and the Humanist Alliance, both members would struggle to maintain supply and reinforcement
lines in the event of a full blown conflict. This was demonstrated when a flood of refugees flowed into NuCoal in
the early TN1940s. While the protectors of the Humanist Alliance aided in the mass migration of certain population
groups such as White Rock, other groups of refugees were less fortunate. Most of these unfortunates traveled across
the deserts in long caravans, which were often raided by bands of rovers.
Moved both by the plight of the refugees as well as practical concerns, Chairman Royz Malkolm approached Terra
Nova Transrail with a proposal to open a connecting maglev line that ran near the equator. NuCoal offered to subsidize
the portion of the new line that would connect the Gamma maglev line from Khayr ad-Din to the Alpha maglev line
at New Baja. In large part due to the protection of the Gamma maglev line by both NuCoal and KADA throughout
the Inter-Polar War, TNTR executives made the surprising move to fund the remainder of the line, and construction
started on the Sigma Line in TN1944.

performing an acrobatic jump in hover mode.
Protector’s Medal
One of two official awards of valor issued by NuCoal. This hexagonal bronze badge has the
side profile of Athena ready for war on a dark green field. This award is given to soldiers
that perform a combat action that saves the force or a city state. Very few of these medals
have been issued since the inception of the NSDF. All instances so far have been awarded
posthumously.
Combat Clasp
The second award of valor given to NSDF soldiers is a gold clasp shaped like a
pair of wings with the branch shield in the center. Each additional instance
of this award earns the soldier a horizontal hanging sword. This award is
issued to combat groups or individuals that perform valorous actions,
but do not merit a Protector’s Medal.

2 LEGACY
The sounds of nurses quietly performing their duties in the sterile private hospital room could be heard through
the thick plastic quarantine walls and Jona's heavy hazmat suit. As of that morning, Preceptor Jona Mannis was
chief M.D. at Thebes Central Hospital. Through the plastic she wondered how long she had before she would start
to resemble the patient through the quarantine wall—members of her caste were dying. The Theban Blight, as the
media had dubbed it, rapidly spread throughout the Humanist Alliance leaving very few survivors among the league’s
leadership. So far, Mannis had not exhibited any signs of the disease, but her mentor and colleagues had rapidly
succumbed to it, and Mannis was powerless to help them.
The patient behind the quarantine wall was exhibiting the last stages of the disease, and Mannis knew he only had
hours left. She had no idea who he might be, but the HIRA agents guarding the entrance and the private room
indicated that whoever he was, the man was important. The previous chief M.D. of the facility had admitted the man
three days ago. The former chief had already entered the second stage of the Blight by that point, and Mannis was
told that she would have to take over the hospital soon.
Soon… Three days. Mannis felt like it had been an eternity since Chief Mendez had told her that she’d be
taking over. The Blight ate away at Mendez and other preceptors in the building, and out of the fifteen preceptors on
staff, Mannis was the only one still healthy.
In the quarantine room, the HIRA agents assembled a military grade satellite trideo communications system and
propped up the man so that he could see the projection that was starting to flicker on and off. Mannis saw an
unfamiliar face of a man with long black hair and dusky skin materialize from the projection, then another face
appeared next him. Archon Navar… Mannis gasped as she realized that the new face was the commander of the entire
Humanist Alliance Protectorate Force. Who was the man in the bed?
Behind her, Mannis felt a hand rest on her shoulder. Turning around, the doctor saw one of the HIRA agents, who
indicated that she should enter the quarantined room. “The Illuminatus is ready for you now, Preceptor Mannis.” The
somber looking bodyguard informed the shocked doctor. Illuminatus Anastapulos, leader of the Humanist Alliance,
was the man lying in the bed. Anastapulos, well known as a robust man, was a mere shell compared to the images
Mannis had seen. Even his familiar beard looked ragged. She walked over to the bed and took measurements with
her medical data-glove. Anastapolus looked at the two men in projection and managed a small grin. “Old friends, I’m
afraid I will be joining the others soon. Mikal, Gavin… I doubt that we as a league can survive this. This virus they call
the Blight has killed most of our brothers and sisters in the preceptors, and without their guidance, Gropius’s utopia
cannot properly function…” Anastapolus grimaced and proceeded to cough violently expelling spittle and blood onto
his hospital gown. Grabbing the rails of the bed to steady himself, the Humanist leader continued, “I have overseen

The dusk skinned man with the long black hair turned to Navar briefly then looked at the Illuminatus. “Gropius’s vision

Anastapolus looked at Gavin Hypolite, “You can trust that man to preserve our future?”
“Yes. I think we can trust him. They will safeguard our secrets and our people.” Gavin replied. “Colonel Arthur is a
man I would trust with my life.”
Nodding his head as if in thought, the Illuminatus leaned back up against his pillows and closed his eyes. Then
opening his eyes and glancing over to Navar, he gave his final order, “Mikal, implement Prometheus. I entrust our
legacy to you and Gavi…n.”
Mannis heard Anastapolus death rattle, and couldn’t shake the feeling that she had just lost more than her leader. At
that moment, a part of the league had died.

Chasseur mk.I
2 NM-01TR-S
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
Developed for the Southern Republic Army by Territorial Arms in the late nineteenth century, the Chasseur failed to meet the stringent
demands for the SRA’s procurement office. The Achilles heel of the first Terra Novan Gear designed with a hover movement system was
its fuel economy; the engine burned through fuel at a rate four times faster than the Jäger. Undaunted by the rejection, an ambitious
marketing director, Edouard Autel, proposed selling the design to another company. Once the design had been purchased by Nineveh, he
would be promoted to vice president of marketing, and would later be instrumental in the sale of the Asp Gear to Southern city-states.
Most early Chasseurs were upgraded Jägers, locally manufactured for the Nineveh military. Both city-states each had a Gear company
of the original design, which served them tolerably well for almost four decades. During the War of the Alliance, the
rare Chasseur was admired by CEF forces and afterwards would inspire the CEF Frames. The early Chasseurs succeeded in Nineveh
due to easy access to fuel and limited operation zones. The high fuel consumption was negligible for the city-state militaries since both
operated large oil production and refinery operations and limited their action to small scale skirmishes that occurred between Erech
and Nineveh themselves.
The most ubiquitous design used by NuCoal, PAK, and the HAPF has overcome the design flaws that Territorial Arms could never resolve
through the combined efforts of the engineers and scientists of all three forces. Although the Chasseur may still resemble the Jäger,
generations of refinement has given rise to a wholly new design which is manufactured entirely within facilities across the Barrington
Basin and in the Humanist Alliance.
Operations History
As the primary trooper Gear in production for NuCoal and PAK, the Chasseur Mark I is the most ubiquitously fielded Gear. The Gear is
quickly gaining popularity as the primary trooper Gear in HAPF as well. The ability of the Gear to maintain speed with the forces hover
vehicles makes the Chasseur MK I a versatile unit. The interchangeability of the parts with existing Jägers used by the forces is an
additional plus for all three armies. At the time of the second CEF invasion, roughly three quarters of the Humanist forces had replaced
the Jäger with the Chasseur MK I in their line Gear cadres. The shift to the Chasseur has been a key to early successes of HAPF forces
in the Pacifica campaign as the forces have been able to match the mobility of invading CEF forces.

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
Co-developed alongside the MK I, the MK II included most items on the R&D teams’ wishlist. The prototypes were incredibly sophisticated,
making significant leaps in Gear architecture, but the military review board froze it in light of the taxing production and maintenance
requirements. Salvaging the allied team’s work, Royz Malkolm, NuCoal founder, suggested Neal Motorwerks engineers develop the
production model.
The three design teams worked within the manufacturing capabilities of NuCoal. While many of the sophisticated designs of the MK
II could be produced in the Humanist Alliance, the cost and supply line issues curtailed the complex modules from being produced. By
the mid forties, many technological production hurdles were met and the time elapsed saw the NuCoal production facilities naturally
upgraded with income from the post Inter-polar War boom: the MK II had become a feasible design.
The final model had some revolutionary design features that crossed over into all of the Gallic series designs. Modular parts integration
came out of the Mark II development, which allowed the sharing of many critical components common to all Gallic series designs. The
caveats to the MK II are its fire control and hover systems, which require precise callibration only achievable in field conditions by
Isaac-class GRELs or HAPF technicians. Luckily for SDF regiments, many of the Jannite GRELs working with the military are Issac class.
With the complexities of the system, the Mark II has been relegated to highly specialized roles, or for units regularly engaged in high
risk missions.
Operations History
Released a cycle after the MK I, The MK II has seen limited distribution due to the complexities of manufacturing and maintenance, but
units that have received the Gear have been extremely satisfied by its performance. Gear cadres using the MK II have shown amazing
results against CEF forces in the Pacifica campaigns. The most notable use of the MK II occurred during the Barrington campaign of
the second CEF invasion. Colonel Arthur’s Wolf Brigade was outfitted with a large number of MK II’s after requisitioning them directly
from Fort Neil’s factories. They were deployed so hastily, that none of them received any paint beyond the red ochre primer. When the
force invaded Port Arthur to retake it from the CEF, captured Earth combat officers noted they hated the red machines as they were so
difficult to destroy and so effective in their aggressive flanking maneuvers to which the GRELs and FLAIL forces had trouble adapting.
After the successful recapture of Port Arthur, the pilots of the red ochre Mark II’s decided to preserve at least some part of their
machines in the original factory primer as a mark of pride in their accomplishments that day.

Lancier
2 NM-03TR-S
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
Conceived originally by Neil Motor Works engineers as a top of the line mining Gear capable of accessing remote mines along the
Westridge Mountain Range, the Lancier evolved into a dedicated mountaineering Gear after the design was evaluated as having a crucial
role in NuCoal’s defense. The original design was retained as the military’s primary workhorse Gear, the Chargeur, but the combat
variant of the mining Gear became the Lancier.
While the original design began as a Neil Motor Works project, the input of Humanist engineers made the Lancier a truly unique Gear.
The integration of twin grapple launchers allowed the Gear greater stability and speed in scaling cliffs. In addition as the launchers
were mounted on the Lancier’s reversed v-engine, the Lancier’s manipulators were free to hold weapons or be used for added stability.
Early tests of the Lancier showcased another use for the powerful grapple launchers at short range. Many of the test pilots noted
how effective the lethally charged grappling hooks could rip into an opponent’s armor. While this option is certainly a viable tactic,
most commanders frown at the use of climbing gear as a weapon and generally the usages of the grappling launchers are restricted
to climbing use, but this regulation is largely disregarded by Lancier pilots, who are known to try and out do each other in acrobatic
feats and as they term it “Score a Righteous Kill”. Lancier pilots go as far as painting winged hearts with spears through them on their
Lancier’s as kill markers for just such kills, a practice rumored to have been started by Kinsy McDaniels, the Lancier’s original test pilot
and current regimental duelist of the Mamulukes Regiment out of Temple Heights.
Another innovation introduced with the Lancier was the Gear Portable Launcher System. As the usual shoulder hardpoints were no
longer a part of the Lancier, the GPL was designed as a suitable replacement for the standard rocket pods used by traditional Gear
designs. One advantage to the GPL over the traditional launcher is the ability to carry extra ammunition on the Gear, giving the Lancier
an advantage of carrying a supply for long term operations. This weapon system was also adopted by the airborne regiments as a result
of tests performed with the Lancier.
The Lancier Gear is relatively simple as a design if all of the climbing Gear were to be removed. As the Lancier was designed with the
modular parts integration system, the Gear shares many of the same components as the Chasseur MK I including the same internal
components for the primary frame. The major differences between the Chasseur MK I and Lancier’s internal components are the
addition of reinforcements to the primary frame in order to absorb the stresses of repeated rappelling. While the Lancier does not
share the secondary movement system as the Chasseur MK I, it does share the same SMS as the Cuirassier. The decision to not
include a hover SMS on the Lancier was a result of a number of factors, not the least of which the instability created by large blasts of
air against a climbing surface and the added weight of the system made the hover SMS impractical.

Operations History
The Lancier has enjoyed a great deal of success since its introduction to the military. While the Gear was originally designed for
mountaineering, Lanciers were ordered by urban garrisons in greater quantity than the city states along the Westridge. Port Arthur
fields an entire company of Lanciers in its urban garrison, but the largest concentration of Lanciers is found in Temple Heights. The
Lancier is the signature Gear used by the Mamelukes. The regiment has an equal number of Lanciers as they do Chasseur MKI’s, but
only the best pilots of the regiment are assigned to Lanciers. Among the number of the Lancier pilots is the regiment’s duelist, Kinsy
McDaniels, the original test pilot of the Lancier. Her Gear, Black Tom, is known to have an evolving NNet and is extremely responsive to
her piloting, and has been known to anticipate her moves by assisting her with the occasional assist. McDaniels is the current reigning
“Righteous Kill Queen” with fifty eight confirmed grapple take downs, most from rovers, but the last twenty have been from CEF kills.
Thirteen of the kills occurred during the rescue operation mounted by the Mamelukes to save Colonel Arthur’s family in Port Arthur at
the inception of the second CEF invasion. The city terrain offered the expert pilot and her section an unparalleled freedom over the CEF
forces as they escaped with the family.

Cuirassier
2 PD-04TR-S
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
Originally conceived as the Humanist Alliance’s answer to the Territorial Arms Black Mamba, the Cuirassier began its life at the HAPF’s
White Rock facility in Spring of TN1920. In the post-War of the Alliance rearmament period, several Black Mambas were procured
by the Humanist Alliance after repeated reports of how well the unit performed. While the Black Mamba suffered from a number of
design deficiencies, most notably the fatally weak armor on the back, Humanist preceptors found that the Black Mamba to be a solidly
engineered Gear. The retro engineering of the Black Mamba was called the Xiphos project and was initiated as part of the secretive
long term defense protocols.
A few early prototype models of the Xiphos were produced under great secrecy by White Rock engineers and deployed to HAPF
regiments in limited numbers as Black Mambas. While externally the Xiphos appeared to be a Black Mamba, the internal components
of the Xiphos were significantly more advanced. The chassis frame was constructed of a lighter composite metal, which was just as
durable as the Mamba’s heavier chassis. The lighter frame allowed thicker rear armor to be installed. The v-engine’s performance was
incrementally increased over time. These prototypes performed incredibly well, but the project was hampered by the secrecy of the
project. On three separate occasions, MILICIA regiments fielded in concert with HAPF forces noted how well the disguised Xiphos
performed in the field. Protectors had to quickly exchange the units with Black Mamba’s and explain the performance as better training.
In TN1932, the Xiphos Project’s information was included in the knowledge sharing treaty engineered by Gavin Hypolite and Colonel Arthur
in Port Arthur. When the combined PAK, NuCoal SDF, and HAPF militaries looked at producing a unified munitions and manufacturing
alliance, the high performance designs integrated into the Xiphos project created the basis for the Gallic Series of vehicles and Gears.
The very first Gear to enter into service from this cooperative effort was the Cuirassier Gear. Internally, the Cuirassier shares most of
the common components found in the Xiphos, but externally the Cuirassier’s armor is a mixed composite and high density alloy used in
most Gallic designs. In addition to the mixed armor, the Cuirassier shares a number of components with other Gears in the Gallic series.
The PAK model in particular has a traditional CEF cockpit module to accommodate Minerva pilots. Some of the NuCoal SDF Cuirassier
also feature this design element.
One variant of the Cuirassier that was tested in the late thirties was a hover enabled version. The complexities of adapting a hover
system into the already technologically superior Cuirassier proved too cumbersome. While three prototype models were produced, the
manufacturing resources needed to implement the design were beyond the means of the allied groups at the time. The final version of
the Cuirassier is a technological marvel, but still within the means of the manufacturing capabilities of NuCoal and Port Arthur.

The Cuirassier has seen widespread deployment since TN1937. The Gear served in the HAPF during the Interpolar War. Port Arthur
and Fort Neil’s factories produced the Gear in large quantities to secretly equip the beleaguered HAPF forces late in the war. Within the
HAPF, the Cuirassier is called the Xiphos still, and is well loved by the elite units in their Gear regiments. PAK forces generally only have
Cuirassier in their best Gear companies and many pilots using the Cuirassier are Terra Novan soldiers trained at the Arthurian Korps
Academy. The more prolific use of the Cuirassier is in NuCoal SDF regiments, where the Gear is a popular alternative to the Chasseur
MKII. Many of the Gear’s pilots are older pilots not used to the complexities of handling a hover enabled Gear like the Chasseur MKII. The
traditional SMS on the Cuirassier and the advanced handling make the Gear commonly seen in veteran sections within the regiments.

jerboa
2 VT-05TR-S
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
The Gear that would eventually become the Jerboa was originally designed by Eddie Verton and Isaac Verton of Jan Mayen. Eddie was a
competitive rally racer originally from the Mekong Dominion, but moved to Jan Mayen in TN1923 in order to escape crushing debts owed
to the Yakuza. In Jan Mayen, he met an eccentric and compulsive Isaac class GREL, who regularly repaired Eddie’s offroad motorbike in
exchange for the use of his last name, Verton. Out of this friendship, Verton Tech emerged.
The small company initially manufactured custom off-road vehicles. Two of these vehicles went into regular production after the pair
couldn’t meet the orders that came flooding into the small shop. In the Summer of TN1932, Verton Tech relocated from Jan Mayen to
Prince Gable to open a factory for their Desert Springer ATV, and Sand Stalker dune buggy. It was during this time, that Eddie won a
contract to maintain the Port Arthur Korps’s Ferret Gears. The parts and components were manufactured at a secondary facility in
Port Arthur, and the company saw a regular source of income from both endeavors. With regular revenue, the friends toyed around
with the development of a custom Gear based on the Ferret’s ingenious secondary movement system. The initial prototype of their
experimental Gear simply took a stripped down Ferret MK II with an enlarged cockpit and experimental boosters mounted on the sides
of the rear wheel. The expanded cockpit was to accommodate a pair of volunteer Minerva GREL test-pilots. With the booster rockets
added by Isaac Verton, the only test pilots willing to try out the Gear were Minerva Zella-5563 and Minerva Kaya-8829, both former
transatmospheric fighter pilots craving the speed and g-forces of their prior occupation.
The initial modifications proved disastrous; the frame of the small Gear couldn’t handle the strain of the boosters and literally shook
apart on first engagement. Zella was hospitalized for nearly a season from the injuries she sustained from the accident. Horrified by the
results of test, Eddie nearly shut down the project. Isaac, on the other hand, perceived the design flaws and went back to their hangar
to start from the ground up. A cycle later, the first Jerboa prototype was complete, but the design lacked a crucial component. Without
the expertise to manufacture NNets, the Jerboa lacked the central processing power to function. Isaac had to utilize the scrapped
Ferret’s NNet, but felt that the processing power of the unit wouldn’t be adequate for the Gear. The second test run was performed
by Kaya in Winter 15, TN1936 just outside of Port Arthur. While the GREL could handle the Jerboa, the Gear’s responsiveness was
sluggish and poor compared to the Ferret. Frustrated with the limitations of production, Isaac mothballed the Gear.
After the subpar performance at the track, the Vertons took another contract with PAK. The Cyclone Hover Cycle was designed with
the help of PAK and HAPF engineers, and at the time they were working on the project, Eddie had discussed he and Isaac’s pet project.
Engineers working on the Gallic Series were impressed with the Jerboa’s design and the lack of a good recon Gear in the series made
the Jerboa an ideal candidate. Three weeks later the Jerboa had a proper NNet and the production model was authorized a season later.

The Jerboa is one of the longest serving Gears in the Gallic Series, and was immediately pressed into service as it was released. The
larger cockpit on the Jerboa made the recon Gear incredibly popular with forces. Currently the Jerboa has seen wide deployment in
the HAPF, PAK, and NuCoal SDF. Within the SDF, the Jerboa is the main recon Gear and has largely supplanted any polar recon Gears.
Second line units within PAK still utilize the Ferret, but are quickly replacing the Northern Gear for the locally manufactured option. The
Humanist forces have been the slowest to adopt the Jerboa, but a recent licensing deal by Verton Tech with Javelin Strategic Industries
to produce the Jerboa for the HAPF in the South has opened up the market for the Gear.
While the Gear has seen wide distribution in the military, the civilian model Jerboa is better known. Verton’s own racing team composed
of the original test pilots Minerva Zella and Kaya won the Deathtrack 1000 in TN1945 and TN1946. The Jerboa was banned from
the event after claims that the boosters gave the vehicle an unfair advantage over the competition. In response to the ban, Eddie and
Isaac started the VT Pro Challenge at the Boyce Canyon Switch in TN1948. The competition held once a season allows any Gears, and
features fast paced racing in a collapsed MacAllen tunnel near Prince Gable. With a heavy amount of sponsorship from local Hermes72
networks, the VT Pro Challenge has proven to be an extremely popular competition.

Chevalier
2 NM-06TR-S
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
Early in the development of the Hussar, NuCoal and PAK commanders identified the need for a less specialized fire support vehicle for
mass production. At the time, Neil Motor Works had been designing a heavy lifter Gear called the Sapeur for use in civilian applications
and was adapted into what would eventually be known as the Chevalier.
Neil Motor Works has had a long history of producing parts and components for older, outdated polar Gears, but in recent cycles
the company has been aggressively pursuing licenses that would allow full productions of those older Gear models. This experience
translated into modifications to existing designs making them viable for general use. This practice lent the design teams skills necessary
to develop original designs. The Chevalier was produced almost entirely without the aid of outside engineering.
Neil Motor Works engineers took prior experiences from manufacturing Boas, Pythons, and Bears and utilized many tried and true
design elements when they constructed the initial design. The prototype resembled more of a Southern design, but the engineers
were dissatisfied with the performance of the heavier armor. Breakthroughs in the Lancier’s designs from HAPF engineers gave the
NMW engineers the compromise they had been looking for in the machine. The angled ceramic and composite metal plating system
was lighter and more durable than the Northern equivalent, but less protected than the fully rounded armor casing that the Southern
designs preferred.
When designing the v-engine for the Chevalier, the NMW teams borrowed heavily from their proven vehicle engines and modified one
of the heavy v-engines utilized on their Longrunner caravan hauler for use on the combat Gear. The power output of the NMW-5000
series engines put out the necessary amount of horsepower, but additional compromises had to be made with the engine in order to
make the vehicle engine work well with combat Gear’s design. The engineers maintained a significant amount of cross compatibility in
the NMW-5000 and the NMW-6000 series designed for the Chevalier. The NMW-6000 model engines were implemented for use in
the Hussar, Voltigeur, and Chevalier. With the exception of a few minor parts, all three vehicles are able to utilize the majority of the
components from each others engines. In the case of the Chevalier, an engine governor is used to cap the output of the engine to within
tolerance levels for the Gear. Some regimental duelists that use the Chevalier have been known to have the engine governor removed to
increase performance, but they are also known to go through more struts and shocks than is typical.
The basic model of the Chevalier has a good variety of support and assault weapons, making the support Gear versatile on the field. Like
most Gears in this class, the Chevalier has a heavy autocannon as its primary point weapon for assault, but the unit shines in its role
as a support vehicle with its combination of NM-25 light guided mortar and NM-45 heavy incendiary rocket pod. For close anti-infantry
protection, the two integrated DI-32 heavy machineguns make quick work of any ground troops.

Operations History
The Chevalier has been active since TN1941 and has seen limited action throughout the last nine cycles. The Humanist Alliance
Protectorate Forces were slow to adopt the Chevalier due to their heavier reliance on striders, but prior to the second CEF invasion,
HAPF forces saw a general increase in the use of the Chevalier. The regiments in the Pacifica front have seen heavy use of their
Chevaliers as their heavy incendiary rockets have been very effective in collapsing invading infantry groups. Within PAK and the NuCoal
SDF, the Chevalier has largely displaced all polar vehicles in their front line regiments. Second line units and county militias still utilize
Polar support Gears, and prior to the CEF invasion, the military planned to have all of the Polar units phased out of SDF and PAK forces
by TN1960.

ESPION
2 JS-07CO-01
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
Designed at White Rock in the Humanist Alliance, the Espion was the HAPF’s solution to replace the highly regulated and monitored
Chameleon and Snake Eye Black Mamba Gears. Development of the Espion began in TN1930 and incorporated technology from the
Humanist produced Ghost stealth fighter into the design. While new technology was introduced during the process, the majority of the
Espion’s design came from a Chameleon stealth Gear covertly acquired from a MILICIA unit. Humanist used the captured Chameleon to
reverse engineer many of its features. The Espion’s armor was designed with a sensor absorbent material similar to the Chameleon’s.
In order to reduce mechanical noise and heat, the larger void space in the internal compartments were filled with tanks of coolant gel.
Eventually these tanks were removed in the final design after technicians complained that the tanks had a habit of bursting under normal
operations. leaving a mess during maintenance and repair.
By TN1935, White Rock had four working prototypes, two of which were transferred to Port Arthur. The remaining two prototypes were
pressed into service during the War of the Alliance and were destroyed late in the war. The two prototypes in Port Arthur underwent
further modifications and were incorporated into the Gallic Production Series. Limited production of the Gallic Series Espion began at
Javelin System’s factories on 12 Summer TN1939, with Humanist forces receiving the first run of the Espion. Since TN1939, Javelin
Systems has been manufacturing the Espion for use by the HAPF, PAK, and NSDF forces, but production is limited to roughly twenty
Espions per cycle due to the high cost and specialized nature of the Gear. In TN1946, the Humanist Alliance opened up a second factory
producing the Espion exclusively for HAPF in Raleigh.
Operations History
The Espion is primarily seen in HAPF forces, but the 4th NSDF Regiment uses the stealth Gear frequently in their covert operations.
The regiment’s Section 3 in the Night Widow Company makes the most effective use of the Espion in their rapid deployment counter-
espionage role. During the TN1940s, the section battled SRID, Mekong Ghost Squads, and Paxton Special Forces in cat and mouse
operations throughout the Lance Point and Prince Gable corridor. The Night Widows utilize the Gear’s airborne and stealth qualities to
strike at enemies swiftly and efficiently.

Hussar
2 PD-10HS-A
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
The monstrous Hussar was the creation of the strider loving HAPF engineers. Intended as a light strider without manipulators, the
Hussar was oringinally designated the Ippikos [Greek for horse rider] at the White Rock facility. The project faced a number of challenges
throughout the TN1905-TN1913 development period. White Rock Engineers had trouble calibrating the gyroscope of the Ippikos due
to its high center of gravity. When the Ippikos engaged its secondary movement system, the prototype had a habit of tipping over or
bottoming out. Additionally, the complex SMS system seriously compromised overall structural integrity.
With the advent of the War of the Alliance, the Ippikos was put on hold due to it's set-backs. Ippikos engineers were retasked to work
on improving the HAPF’s manufacturing capabilities. Post-war, Humanist preceptors studied captured CEF vehicles, and within a few
cycles, the metallurgical properties of the captured hovertanks were understood and applied to various projects including the Ippikos
and the Xiphon. The advanced metal was able to handle the transformation of the Ippikos, but did not address the balance issues.
Preceptors designed a new frame proposing the addition of two arms. The modified frame was a strange Gear Tank hybrid that worked
very well. The initial Ippikos prototype went into production in TN1932 and was secretly tested in the Barrington Basin in cooperation
with elite PAK units as part of the secret alliance between the league and the remnant CEF forces.
PAK forces were very impressed with the Ippikos and pressed their allies for the design specifications, but the Gear Tank was left out
of the original treaty. The Ippikos remained in the prototype phase until TN1937 when the unit was deemed essential by the HAPF
protectors. The loss of so many preceptors to the Theban Blight left only one option for production: facilities south of Port Arthur were
pressed into producing the Ippikos. Only a hundred and twenty two Ippikos were produced at the facilities before the Interpolar War
had wound down. Most of the Ippikos Tank Striders were plagued with the same issues the prototype suffered and many were scrapped
after the war.
NuCoal design development of the Gallic Series vehicles was underway during the Interpolar War and the Ippikos was rolled into the
series. PAK and NuCoal engineers modified the overly complex Ippikos and the simplified chassis and armor made the Gear Tank function
at a more optimal rate. Stripping away some of the overly engineered internal components made the newly dubbed Hussar more
useable in the field. Technicians were able to make repairs and the interchangeability of a number of parts made the Hussar capable of
sustainable field operations. Even with these changes, the Hussar is still considered one of the most complex machines fielded in the
joint militaries. The Hussar is primarily produced by the Humanist owned Javelin Strategic Industries. A limited number are produced
by Neil Motor Works for NuCoal use, and in Port Arthur, the Defense Industries manufactures a few dozen of the units each cycle.

Operations History
The HAPF and NuCoal forces are the primary users of the Hussar which are generally fielded in Hussar batteries or strider companies
as a mobile light artillery vehicle. The versatility of the unit which bridges Striders and Gears fits well into the military doctrine of both
forces. While PAK utilizes the Gear Strider to some extent in its forces, the slow moving vehicle sees less use due the highly mobile
forces employed by the Arthurian Korps.
In Humanist forces, the Hussar is still referred to as the Ippikos, though functionally the vehicle is exactly the same as the Hussar.
During the Interpolar War, the original Ippikos saw heavy use within the few regiments lucky enough to have had access to them. Most
of the Gear Striders sustained heavy damage or became unusable after a few seasons of use largely due to maintenance complexities
and the lack of replacement parts. Still even with those issues, the Ippikos was highly regarded by the pilots and the companies that
fielded them. With the introduction of the Hussar to the HAPF forces, the Gear Strider has a significant presence in the revitalized
Humanist forces.
In the current CEF invasion, the Hussar is being used aggressively in both the Barrington and Pacifica front. Often the vanguard of
armored companies, the Hussar is capable of laying down tremendous firepower from advantageous positions, while heavier elements
move into the kill zone. Rumors persist of NuCoal forces fielding the Hussar in the field taking down at least one HHT-90 Overlord tank
during the brutal fighting north of Port Arthur.

FUSILIER
2 NM-23CA-01
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
The Fusilier was designed to provide Port Arthur and the NSDF an inexpensive, rugged light hover-tank. The Prowler series of light
hovertanks utilized by PAK have required a massive investment of maintenance time and labor. While associations with the Humanist
Alliance did provide Port Arthur with replacement parts, a design that could be produced locally was needed. The Fusilier project was
developed during the same period as the Hetarois, but met with little success till TN1935, when Port Arthur brought in Neil Motor
Works engineers in to assist in the design process. NMW engineers approached the vehicle with an eye on simplicity, and began
stripping many of the complex components from the original design.
After a cycle, the joint design teams produced the first prototypes, which were field tested by PAK during the Monday Blues incident.
The cockpit configurations of the prototypes mimicked the Prowler series, but the GREL crews found the performance differences too
unnerving, which resulted in the prototypes seeing very little combat exposure during the conflict. After additional field tests, Port
Arthur decided to continue using the Prowlers as their primary light hover-tank, but the Humanist and NMW engineers successfully
brought the Fusilier into the HAPF and NSDF forces by TN1938.
The majority of the Fusiliers produced from TN1938-TN1943 were made by Neil Motor Works and sold primarily to local NSDF
regiments. Neil Motor Works continued to produce the Fusilier for the NSDF, but in TN1945, the company began limited production on
the PAK variant for Port Arthur. After TN1943, Javelin Systems started production exclusively for HAPF forces, and the Fusilier is now
commonly seen next to the Hetarois.
Operations History
Since its introduction to the NSDF and the HAPF, the Fusilier has seen very little active combat beyond hunting rovers and participating
in patrols. All of that has changed since the second CEF invasion. Fusilier crews are on the front lines of the Barrington and Pacifica
theaters. The light hover-tank has proved itself well against its CEF counterparts, and the simplicity of the design gives the Fusilier
staying power on the field. During the Wolf Brigade’s campaign to retake Port Arthur, forty-three Fusiliers were heavily damaged in the
fierce fighting. By the time the Wolf Brigade left to pursue fleeing CEF forces, forty one of the Fusiliers were back to operational status
and engaged in the chase.

Voltigeur
2 NM-30HS-A
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
The Voltigeur is a uniquely NuCoal design. In TN1925 Neil Motor Works engineers began the design process on the Voltigeur, a general
production main battle tank for sale to the Eastern Sun Emirates and more affluent Badlands communities. The design process
stagnated till TN1934 due to the high cost involved in armament, but the basic chassis of the tank had been constructed and field
tested with an underpowered Dalton M-Series cannon rather than the heavier C-Series. In order to simulate the C-Series, the engineers
mounted a second M-Series cannon on the turret and slaved the cannons to fire simultaneously. Field testing with the dual cannons
proved so effective that tank’s basic design was changed to the dual cannon variation and the original design was designated as an
alternative model.
When the Votigeur was brought in to the Gallic Series of vehicles, the joint task engineer groups recommended the addition of
interchangeable missile banks to provide the vehicle with added versatility. Many of the internal components of the tank were redesigned
to be cross compatible with both the Fusilier and Sampson. Though the Voltigeur is part of the Gallic Series of vehicles, PAK military
officers rejected its use in Port Arthur’s forces. The officers regarded the slower moving ground tank inferior to their Predator class
hover-tanks. On the other hand, Humanist saw the Voltigeur as a good replacement for the Visigoths.
In Spring TN1937, the first production model of the Voltigeur rolled out of NMW factories. Since that time, the bulk of Voltigeurs have
been sold to NSDF regiments, but a few have been sold to HAPF forces since TN1940.
Operations History
The Voltigeur has been involved in very little combat prior to the second CEF invasion. The main battle tank was used primarily in joint
operations against rovers and New Human Republic remnants. In general, the tank is found near its operations bases or home city
states, since the sheer weight of the vehicle precludes it from airlifts to distant combat zones.
The Voltigeur has proven rugged and reliable against invading CEF forces. Tank companies equipped with Voltigeurs and supported by
armored infantry sections effectively defended Tanis Towers, a sizeable oasis tower in the counties surrounding Port Arthur, during the
early days of the invasion. With the aid of infantry forward observers, the Voltigeurs fired on the encroaching CEF and laid waste to
GREL armored infantry and hover-tank formations.

SamPson
2 NM-21tc-1
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
The Sampson HAPC was designed as a companion vehicle for the Hetarois, and many of the internal design elements are shared
between the two designs. Largely modeled after the CEF’s HPC-64 Pacifier, the Sampson was engineered at the White Rock skunk
works in the early TN1920’s using captured samples. Even with the samples, Humanist engineers had difficulty understanding the
engineering principles behind Earth’s hovercraft. After cycles of trying to replicate the CEF tech, Humanist engineering breakthrough
came in TN1926, when Gavin Hypolite secured an exchange of information from Port Arthur. With access to Earth technicians and
schematics, Humanist engineers were able to quickly construct a prototype hover vehicle. With limited testing capabilities, the hover
APC was delayed in favor of the Hetarois’ development. By the time of the Interpolar War, the single prototype was moved to Port Arthur
in order to safeguard the design from invading Southern Republic forces.
In Port Arthur, the Sampson underwent secondary design changes. Most of the design changes came from Neil Motor Works engineers,
who proposed a simplification of the vehicle. The success of the Fusilier team in reducing the complexity of the original design prompted
similar measures to be applied to the Sampson. In the redesign process, many of the internal components were standardized to work
with the Fusilier and Voltigeur. With a number of systems removed from the design, the Sampson was given added armor and a wide
rear door for rapid troop deployment. The simplified design was approved in TN1938 and Neil Motor Works and Javelin Systems began
producing the vehicle later that cycle.
Operations History
The inexpensive Sampson is one of the most widely produced military vehicles in NuCoal and is seen in every Regional Defense Zone and
regiment. The vehicle has seen regular action including involvement in a number of small skirmishes late in the Inter-Polar War. Vehicle
crews and armored infantry personnel have strong attachments to their assigned Sampsons, and most of the vehicles are adorned
with nose art and names.
In TN1945, the Humanist Alliance began phasing out the southern Caiman APC from its forces and started replacing the model with
Sampsons produced in the Javelin Systems factory in Raleigh. The first units to receive the Sampsons were cavalry companies utilizing
the Hetarois and Fusiliers.
Since the second CEF invasion, the Sampson has performed exceptionally well against its Pacifier counterparts. Increasingly the heavily
armored Sampson has found itself pressed into service as a makeshift light hover-tank, and scouting vehicle.

Chargeur
2 NM-100EN-1
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
Designed off the Lancier Chassis, the Chargeur is used in both military and civilian markets and manufactured by Neil Motor Works,
Klingman Heavy Industries in Port Arthur, and Taurus Engineering Consortium in Prince Gable. The civilian variant is heavily utilized in
cliff side mining operations and replaces the heavy lifter arms with the standard military harpoons. The clamps on the ends of the arms
are usually changed out for a drill and a simple three digit manipulator. The internal mechanics of the Chargeur are largely similar to the
Lancier, though the civilian variant does not have the advanced actuators and NNet programming.
The military variant is part of the Gallic series and is used by PAK and NSDF forces for general base usage. The military variant is wholly
manufactured by Neil Motor Works and is completely interchangeable with the Lancier. The NSDF, PAK, and to a lesser extent HAPF
use the Chargeur to move munitions, aid in repairs, and as ammunition loaders. Combat engineer companies also use the Chargeur in
construction and earth moving. Both combat engineers and base technicians prefer the Chargeur to the standard civilian models due
to the ease of use and the inclusion of a secondary movement system, a luxury usually missing from most worker and engineering class
Gears.
Operations History
The Chargeur has been part of NSDF, PAK, and HAPF military operations since TN1939. For the most part, the Gear has seen very little
combat beyond the county defenses. The NuCoal Marshal Service commonly uses an Chargeur configured for combat. These versions
are equipped with a forearm mounted PD-67 25mm Autocannon and PD-10 10mm machineguns. The Marshal configuration of the
Chargeur sees regular use in the field as a general purpose patrol Gear. A number of famous shoot outs between marshals and rovers
occurred since the inception of the Chargeur. The most notable incident occurred in TN1943 between Foster Rapids Marshal Service
and the Hole in the Head Gang. The marshals fielded four Chargeurs in addition to three older model Hunters. The Hole in the Heads was
equipped with salvaged military Gears and vehicles. The group regularly attacked local communities on their way to Wounded Knee, but
on 08 Summer, TN1943, marshals under command of Deena Carville forced a fight against the group on Salisbury Flats. After an hour
of fighting the marshals prevailed. Carville in her Chargeur racked up four kills.

NM-101EN-1 2
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
The second Gallic series engineering Gear is the Sapeur, which is based off of the Chevalier Support Gear. Massive tool arms and a
powerful engine make this worker Gear a popular construction and heavy lifting option for both military and civilian markets, and the
Sapeur is a common sight in the rapidly growing NuCoal communities. Primarily manufactured by Neil Motor Works, the Sapeur is also
manufactured by Klingman Heavy Industries in Port Arthur and Wallaby Corporation in Raleigh, Humanist Alliance.
The Sapeur has two primary variations. The first is the earth moving and mining configuration, which utilizes broad tool arms with drill
bits and other mining equipment. Since its introduction in civilian markets, the companies have an average combined sales of four to six
thousand units per cycle. The popular construction Gear has penetrated the northern market in the Western Frontier Protectorate, and
in the southern market, the Sapeur is sold to the Eastern Sun Emirate’s government and in general distribution in the Humanist Alliance.
The second usage of the Sapeur is found in the military where it is used as a ordinance hauler, super heavy lifter, and tank recovery
vehicle. The heavy drills are generally swapped out for lifter arms or earth moving scoops. In the military, the Sapeur is found primarily
in the combat engineer companies. Technical services are allotted a single Sapeur for every four Chargeurs.
Operations History
Like the Chargeur, the Sapeur rarely sees combat, though the heavier engineering Gear is often found in combat zones. Most of the
Sapeurs are used in the construction of defenses, fortifications, and military infrastructure projects. In the Port Arthur Defense Zone,
PAK uses the Sapeur to aid in county development and fire base construction. During these construction jobs, the Sapeur is usually
equipped with weaponry for protection. In the Siege of Temple Heights, all of the Sapeurs were equipped with heavy weaponry and used
as a makeshift mobile artillery platform. The casualties among these combat groups was inordinately high.

Rumble Road
“Test three hundred and forty nine. You’re kiddin’ right?” Gary Drommond asked his boss with resignation. The
test pilot for Neil Motor Works was getting tired of running the prototype Chasseur MKI around the tracks. The
multi-national engineering groups all had their ideas and tweaks to add to the design, and Drommond tried to tell
them that the Gear was fine just the way it was. The divisions in the engineering section were split on whether or
not the Humanist designs should be integrated into the final production model, and Drommond’s boss fell on the
side of simplicity. The Chasseur MKII currently piloted by Drommond’s professional rival, Alexi Turnow, consistently
showcased the capabilities of the Humanist design, but the Mark I was easier to maintain and in the longer term, it
would be easier to manufacture.
Gary watched the monitor of the test course. Alexi was pushing the Mark II’s top speed to the limits, and noted all
of the tricks his rival used in handling high speed turns and cutting down on the wind resistance to the Gear. Karrin
Polli, Drommond’s boss, leaned over his shoulder and watched the Mark II as is glided around the corner at a higher
speed than the engineer specs had forecasted. “I love watching Alexi handle his machines, but you seem obsessed
about it. Anyways, you’ve got two tests scheduled today.”
Looking back at his boss, Gary sighed. “Two more tests? How much longer are we going to be doing this? I thought
we had this unit locked in for production.”
“Oh, cheer up! How many places pay you a six figure income for doing something you love to do anyways?” Karrin
asked. She reached into her work overall chest pocket and recovered a memory stick and offered it to Gary. “Plus, I
think you’ll like today’s tests too.”
Gary took the memory stick and waved it across his personal assistant. The data wirelessly transferred over and
showed the parameters for the two tests. Joint tests? The words caught Gary’s eyes and he looked back at his boss.
“I’m going to be on the track with Alexi?” he asked cautiously. Tests were almost always done solo. The risk of having
two prototypes on the track at the same time was too great.
“Yep. The bosses confirmed earlier this week that we’re going to produce both variants of the Chasseur. All the
arguing wasn’t anything design related. We just wanted to see which team’s version would win in a straight race. So
we arranged for the last two tests. So do us proud, Drommond, go out there and kick Alexi’s ass.” Karrin said with
a broad smile.
Gary leapt out of seat and rushed out to the hangar to suit up. Ever since he had been recruited to be a test pilot out
of the pro-racing circuit, Gary Drommond felt trapped. He had two cycles of pent up competitive urges to release.
Hours later, the Humanist Alliance engineers were confounded by the results of the last two tests. There was no way
according to their numbers that the Mark I could have ever beat their Mark II design, but in both tests, the simpler
model outperformed the Mark II. The engineers demanded a new series of tests to re-evaluate their numbers.

“Doloreana Canyon was a minor caravan passage to the lower Barrington Basin, but the natural corridor was a popularly
contested feature between the Badlanders and local MILICIA patrols. The last conflict resulted in the MILICIA destroying
the local defenses and the small hamlet of Dawg’s Creek.” Ullrich said as he looked across the table to his subordinates.
“That’s why we’re going to go there and show those southerners they can’t mess with Badlands communities in the
Barrington.”
Durner, a young Gear section officer, raised his hand. “Sir? These communities aren’t part of NuCoal or the Port Arthur
Defense Zone. Why are we going there?”
The older officers groaned realizing the young officer was about to set Ullrich off on one of his tirades about Badland’s
solidarity and setting an example, but the commander surprised the staff when he merely grinned and shook his head.
“If you can’t answer that, son, you won’t have much of a future in my forces.”
Durner’s face turned a bright red and he was about to protest, but Ullrich motioned with his hand to stop. “I’ll give you
a chance to prove me wrong. Your section is coming with me.”
The flight to the region was uneventful and Ullrich deployed a single company to handle the security for the local
communities. Durner and his men worked closely with the homesteaders and the young officer found himself drawn
closer to the people of the region. The village of Yori, located at the entrance to Doloreana Canyon, hosted Durner’s
section during the weeks after their deployment. The small collection of families serviced the caravans that frequented
the canyon and had been targeted by the MILICIA during the last conflict due to the location.
On the third week of deployment, the section’s scout squad had contact with the southern forces near the opposite end
of the canyon. After reporting to Ullrich, Durner ordered the rest of his section into action and swore to defend Yori.
Mounting up in his Command Sidewinder, the young officer rushed out to meet the enemy. Durner realized he didn’t
have enough to stop the incursion, but he could slow them down till the main force arrived.
The high canyon walls provided good cover from any indirect fire, but the tight quarters were potential kill zones to
anybody not familiar with the terrain. The villagers in Yori had made sure that Durner and his men knew all of the
best ambush and fallback points. In the first hour of contact, Durner’s section put the terrain to good use and kept
the MILICIA compagnie trapped. The fighting escalated as the sun approached its zenith in the sky, and the MILICIA
relocated part of its compagnie to the top of the canyon. Durner’s single squad at the top was no match for the enemy.
Durner could see the end approaching. Ullrich would not make it in time, and he didn’t know if his men’s sacrifices
would keep the village safe. Desperate, Durner opened his communications to a general channel. “To the commander
of the MILICIA- I wish to resolve this without further casualties. I invoke Delyon’s Code and request to resolve this as
soldiers of honor.”
The fighting slowed down and stopped, when Durner received his reply. A stern woman’s voice with a thick Republican
accent replied, “I’m surprised Earth scum like you would invoke Delyon, but I will not disgrace it. What are your terms?”
Durner sighed in relief. “Withdrawal. If your duelist defeats me, I will pull my forces back. If I defeat your duelist, your
forces withdraw.”
“Very well, then we fight in southern style. Equip your Gear with a rapier and meet me on the field. I will be your
opponent, but if you dishonor Delyon’s Code, I will give you and your men no quarter” the MILICIA commander replied.
Durner’s shoulders relaxed as he replied, “I will meet you on the field of honor.” The three time champion of the
Barrington Pro Dueling Circuit knew he still had a chance to save the village.

DARK SKIES
Lt. Colonel Mikaela Moore’s stress was peaked from events during the previous week and the impending conflict.
The NSDF regiment commander had never imagined having to work with and manage a multi-national coalition to
defend her home city-state. Temple Height offered no strategic value to the CEF, yet the satellites showed two full
Korps making landfall sixty kilometers north of the city-state, and the vanguard of Earth’s forces were drawing
nearer rapidly. Force Commander Arthur and NSDF Commander Mansoor had arrived six days ago and worked with
their WFPA and MILICIA allies to fortify Temple Heights’s inadequate defenses, but even with the additional forces, if
both Korps attacked the city-state, Mikaela knew that Temple Heights would fall. The defenders just didn’t have the
manpower to protect the city from direct attack by such an overwhelming force.
Outside of Temple Heights, Nathani and his parents worked their way towards the imposing mesa in the distance.
The Koreshi had travelled rapidly out of the Godswell Valley, and had made their way to the Gamma Maglev Line. The
outsiders that had come to ‘save’ the Koreshi marveled at the efficiency of his people, but Nathani knew that they had
been moving too slow. The other En Koreshi, the grey skinned warriors of the Thrall Koreshi, acted as the vanguard
for the exodus. Nathani was the youngest member of the group, and the elders had entrusted him with the keys to
Temple Heights’ Inner Sanctum. Any member of the En Koreshi could gain entry. The key was in their blood. As the
caravan approached Temple Heights, Nathani could feel the memories implanted in him through the trials come to
the forefront. Memories of the elders arrival on the planet. Where the mesa stood was once a spire of metal that
reached to the heavens. The Koreshi called this place home once, but the metal spire no longer stood tall or proud.
Frei, Nathani’s mentor and one of the oldest of the En Koreshi, stared at the mesa with eyes of familiarity. Time had
meant little for her, and Nathani wondered if she had been witness to the original spire.
“Little one, our ancestral enemies will be coming for us. They can not be allowed to enter the city.” Frei told Nathani.
“I do not trust these lost ones to hold the line.”
Nathani nodded in agreement. The memories implanted in him revealed the truth of the enemies to him. “Frei, will the
elders be okay? We left them with less defenders.”
“They’ll be fine, little one. You should worry for your parents and the rest of our people.” Frei replied with a smile. Her
golden eyes displayed concern that was unspoken, and that worried the young En Koreshi.
From the plateau of the mesa, Commandant Neuben and Faisal surveyed the flat desert below them. The two MILICIA
officers arrived at Temple Heights with Arthur and WFPA Brigadier Hasegawa along with Prefect Anastace, commander
of the 2nd MILICIA Border Legion and Faisal’s boss. The multi-national coalition forged under a hastily thrown
together agreement succeeded in crushing the CEF’s XVIII & XIX Korps in the preceding weeks. In the aftermath, the
two MILICIA legions and the WFPA Landship Fleets coordinated with PAK’s leader to pursue and eliminate pockets of
resistance. Arthur pushed for his new found allies to aid him in the defense of Temple Heights, which he cryptically
promised would be the key to the planet’s survival. Hasegawa committed a third of his fleet to the defense, but the
remaining forces were sent north to hammer the rear flanks of the XVII Korps. Prefect Marchand, commander of
the 1st MILICIA Airborne Legion, agreed to help the fleet in securing the Western Frontier Protectorate. The MILICIA
Legion commanders reorganized their forces to optimize the deployment. Commandant Faisal working through
Prefect Anastace negotiated hard to acquire Commandant Neuben and her 12th Heavy Gear Airborne Regiment from
Marchand’s legion for the operation, and was surprised when the hardnosed leader of 1st Legion acceded to the
request. Faisal looked over to his friend and wondered if either of them would survive what was coming. Faisal’s gut
feeling screamed at him to leave this place and find safety elsewhere, but the MILICIA commandant knew that if they
didn’t succeed here, there would be no place for them to retreat.

THE SIEGE OF TEMPLE HEIGHTS
5
DARK SKIES [coNCLUSION]
Nathani looked one last time at the combat occurring in the chamber. None were capable of defeating an En Koreshi.
The fighting in the White Desert had proved that to him, but looking at the CEF troops in the chamber, Nathani began
to doubt the superiority of his people.
Turning to the opening that his people had been working clear, Nathani rushed into the tunnel. Unlike the caverns
above, the tunnel leading to the Inner Chamber was lined in metal tiles and supports. None of the metal showed signs
of rust or blemish and a low hum emitted from the walls. As Nathani approached the end of the hall, the humming
started to grown louder as if reacting to his presence. The door at the end of the hall bore the elder’s crest. Nathani
remembered seeing it when he underwent the tests in the Godswell Valley, but the shape had slight variances. He
saw the plate that he intuitively knew would react to his touch. The memories programmed into him guided the young
Koreshi. Reaching out slowly, Nathani touched the hexagonal plate. At first he didn’t think the plate would react to
him, but the sudden expulsion of gasses trapped in the Inner Chamber showed that he was wrong.
The heavy metal door slid into the ceiling and the floor, revealing the Inner Chamber to Nathani. The small room’s
walls were covered in the same hexagonal metal contact plates, and in the center was a dais with a raised altar topped
by a small human sized stone head. Nathani’s eyes gravitated to the contact plates. He intuitively knew the altar was a
decoy. Simple trappings to throw off the true purpose of the room. Walking to the contact panels, Nathani placed his
hand against the cold metal plate. It was all he had to do. He knew the elders had programmed the system to react to
what had been injected into him during his trials.
Above the Inner Chamber in the Templar Research Center, the rumbling in the earth indicated something unusual was
occurring. At first the soldiers in the center of the crescent thought the shaking was tied to a new round of artillery
fire, but quickly changed their mind, when they realized that the rumbling turned into a low frequency humming noise
emanating from the interior walls of the crescent. Mikhaela didn’t know what was happening below, but on the plateau
the remaining CEF GRELs were reacting to the low frequency noise in bizarre ways. Most stopped whatever they
had been doing, but some reacted violently attacking anything nearby including their own allies. The FLAILs were
unaffected beyond trying to reconcile the sudden strange reaction their allies were demonstrating.
“Sebastapol, what’s going on with the GRELs?” Moore asked over the communications network. She could see the
Jannite GRELs were still fighting, but they were clearly being affected by the noises.
“We don’t seem to be affected like our CEF brothers and sisters, but it feels like we’re in the tanks going through a
hypnotraining reinforcement. I.. don’t know what’s going on..” Sebastapol replied with strain in his voice.
North of the city-state, Hasegawa and Hallistor’s forces had finally broken the XXIV Korps. The strange noises
coming from beneath the surface and up the stone spires affected the CEF forces to the point of crippling their
ability to counterattack. In the aftermath of the battle, the Terra Novan forces wondered what had happened. The low
frequency sound had abated to inaudible levels, but it could still be detected on the sensors.
Commandant Neuben searched the battlefield to recover Faisal’s body. She found his shattered Command Caiman.
She exited her Black Mamba’s cockpit and walked over to the burnt hull. As she approached the vehicle, Neuben knew
she wouldn’t find Faisal’s body. The interior had been subjected to a high heat energy weapon, and she knew that
anything living would have been vaporized. After weeks of non-stop fighting, Neuben’s body could no longer handle
the stress. Falling to her knees, the hardened veteran wept for everybody that had been lost.
Arthur surveyed the damage of the battlefield. Whatever the Koreshi had done had saved the Terra Novan forces at
Temple Heights, but the damage to the joint forces was tremendous. The battle was a Pyrrhic victory for Terra Nova.
Two CEF Korps were destroyed in the battle, but the Terra Novans had suffered over sixty percent casualties, and
Hasegawa’s landship fleet had been reduced to three outdated destroyers with heavy damage. Hallistor reported to
Arthur that the Falcon Brigade had weathered the battle with fewer casualties, and was diverting some of his forces
to Temple Heights. Arthur realized he would have to regroup and rearm before they would be able to contribute any
further to the war.
The En Koreshi surveyed the dunes and watched their prey enter the CEF landing craft. The battle in the Temple of the
Gentle Winds ended after Nathani activated the Inner Chamber. The Valkyrie troops pulled out of the temple, but the
En Koreshi knew they could not let the Valkyrie escape. Frei motioned for the En Koreshi to board the craft and kill
the crew. The En Koreshi would deny the CEF the information they sought, even if it meant taking to stars once again.

It has come to my attention that your technical team has not finished my Cuirassier repairs. I need an ETA when you
think it’ll get done by.
When it gets done. My techs found a few other problems. Had to do a thorough inspection to make sure we got all the
problems locked down. Should be done in a day or two.
It’s been two days, Dowles. Where’s my damn Gear! I’m sick of waiting. Get your men moving on my work order or
else!

6 1 Preparation & Assembly
Before you can paint your model you’ll want to inspect
it, cut it from the sprue, and clean up any flashing with a
hobby knife, some needle files, and sandpaper. You’ll also
need some cyanoacrylate glue (CA glue) to bond resin to
resin, and a set of model brushes. Sable or similar hair
brushes are the cream of the crop, but can be expensive
for a beginner. Try to avoid synthetic brushes, and be sure
to have a range of sizes such as 1, 0, and 00.
For all parts of the model that you want to paint in metallics,
such as the Very Heavy Autocannon, be sure to base them
in Pure Black. Once you’ve done that, inspect the model
