Source: The passage below is taken from a history book about the European conditions
between 1300 and 1650.
The word ‘Renaissance’ means ‘rebirth’ of ‘revival’. Hence, it means the time in Europe
between 1300 and 1650 when men became interested in the culture of ancient Greece
and Rome. But the men of the Renaissance did not simply copy the past. Although they
used many ideas from ancient Greece and Rome, their cultures soon developed its own
features. The Renaissance happened mainly because of the changes in man’s ways of
making a living. In the late Middle Ages, trade grew and many more people lived in towns.
The growth of trade made towns and cities rich. There was now more money to spend on
learning and art. Rich merchants, kings and princes gave money to artists and writers to
help them with their work.
2a) According to the Source, was the culture in the Renaissance the same as those of

education promoted by the establishment of more grammar schools at which

Crusades, which were sent to get back the Holy Land from the Muslims. They
brought back a lot of classical ideas and writing to Europe where there were a lot of

together with the new way of making paper facilitated the printing of books in a faster,

easier and cheaper way, which certainly helped the revival of learning in Europe and
finally the Renaissance. /

the social inequality. The Third Estate suffered a lot in the meantime. The peasants

With the help of my own knowledge, the French Revolution broke out as there was

unfairness and inequality in the French society and wanted to rebel against tyranny
in France by starting the French Revolution in 1789. /
