9. MAINTENANCE

9.1 Cleaning the AccuScreen PRO

• Before cleaning, switch off the AccuScreen PRO

Note and separate it from any external power supply.
Before you clean the device, unplug the probe
and the data transfer cable plugs from the device.

• The device can be cleaned with a moist cloth – if

necessary with a little surface disinfectant.

• Note: Only use wiping disinfectant.

• Make sure that no moisture enters the probe or

the socket (data interface and probe plug.

• Never immerse the AccuScreen PRO into water

or any other cleaning solution.

9.2 Maintenance of the probe tip

9.2.1 Cleaning and disinfecting the probe tip

NEVER place the probe tip in the ear canal without

Note using a proper eartip.

The probe tip usually does not come into contact

with the skin or secretion from the ear canal as it is
covered by the ear tip. In some cases, i.e. a large
amount of cerumen in the ear canal, debris may be
deposited on the probe tip. Please change the probe
tip to continue the screening process.

Even small amounts of cerumen can occlude one

channel of the probe.

23
AccuScreen Service Manual

Two step cleaning procedure:

1. Regular cleaning (without water or disinfectant)

must be performed if there is any debris (e.g.
cerumen) at the probe tip.

Then:

2a Cleaning with water and/or disinfectant must be

performed at the end of the day, even if the probe
tip shows no signs of occlusion.

Or:

2b. Cleaning with water and/or disinfectant and

sterilization must always be performed after use in an
infected ear canal.

A Regular cleaning (without water or disinfectant):

Press the button (A) to remove the probe tip (B) while
you push the probe tip carefully upwards out of the
probe body.

D Use the cleaning wire (C) to take out the acoustic filter
disc (D) from the probe tip

C Use the cleaning wire (C) to clean the sound channels of

the probe from the rear.

Cleaning with water and/or disinfectant, as well as the

sterilization procedures are described in section 9.3.
Make sure that the sound channels are completely dry
before you refit the tip on the body of the probe.

24
AccuScreen Service Manual

Even the slightest amount of moisture may dissolve any

residual cerumen and thus contaminate the sensitive
micro filter in the body of the probe.
NOTE

The probe body contains sensitive components. Never

clean the sound apertures in the probe housing
mechanically or with liquids. Doing so may cause damage
to the probe. Please contact your authorized service
department for a periodical cleaning of the probe body –
see section 9.2.

9.2.2 Changing the acoustic filter disc

If the calibration procedure fails and the message

“Probe Error!” is displayed, the acoustic filter of the
Note probe may be damaged or blocked.

In such a case, the acoustic filter disc must be

changed. To do so, remove the probe tip and use the
cleaning wire (C) to take out the acoustic filter disc
from the probe tip (see section 9.2.1). When you
insert a new disc, make sure that it is placed
correctly.

Acoustic filters are disposable. Cleaning and

disinfecting is not possible.

9.3 Cleaning of probe tip and cleaning wire

Please respect the local hygienic standards for

disinfecting & sterilization.

Sterilization of the probe tip may be required after

having been used in infected ear canals.

25
AccuScreen Service Manual

Regular cleaning
- Use a wet tissue for regular surface cleaning.
- Immerse for 5-10 min. in a lukewarm mild soap
water bath.

Disinfecting
Immerse for 5-10 min. in a bath of chemical
disinfectant ethanol (70-80%), propanol (70-80%9 or
aldehydes (2%-4%).

Sterilization
Use autoclaving in accordance with the national
standards for vapor sterilization with an exposure
time up to 45 min. at a maximum temperature of
150°C.

It is recommended not to exceed 50 sterilization

cycles for each item.

Please make sure to check the probe tip for

deformation after sterilization.

9.4 Cleaning and disinfecting the test cavity

The test cavity should only be used for disinfected

probe tips.

If the test cavity has been contaminated with debris,

use gas sterilization according to the local hygienic
standards (i.e. with ethyleneoxide, temperature.
55°C, pressure: 0.8 to 1.0 bar).

Do not use bath or autoclaving!

9.5 Maintenance of the battery

9.5.1 Safety information

• Do not throw the battery pack into fire and keep

it away from fire as it may explode. Incorrect
handling, applying excessive charging current or
reversing the poles can overcharge or destroy the
batteries.

26
AccuScreen Service Manual

• Do not open, alter or dismantle the battery pack.

• Do not place the battery pack into contact with

metal objects.

• The terminals may under no circumstances be

short-circuited.

9.5.2 Increasing service life

• Only use the recommended charging unit.

• Charge the battery pack at room temperature

whenever possible.

• Do not drop the battery or expose it to sharp

impact.

• Store in a cool, dry place.

• Keep the battery pack’s terminals clean (if

necessary, clean with a dry cloth)

9.5.3 Environmental protection

• Please return any used NiMH-battery packs to

your dealer.

• Damage resulting from failure to observe the

operating instructions will invalidate all warranty.
The manufacturers take no responsibility for
damage resulting from negligence.

Appendix A – Device Check Procedure after SW Configuration/Firmware Update

Appendix A Device check Procedure after SW

configuration / Firmware update

General remarks
All devices are delivered fully tested, which means that every function supported by
the hardware is tested.

The final production step is the uploading of the software package, as required by
the customer. After this step, an additional final test is needed.

The test should cover hardware failures as well as faulty software uploads.

Material:
• AccuScreen device with fully charged battery
• PC or laptop equipped with a serial port and the firmware CD
• Transfer cable for uploading software
• License code for the desired software
• Loop back test cable for final test
• Probe and test cavity
• ABR cable if ABR option is available.

Software test:
After uploading the software, switch on the device and check the version code
visually (Options -> HW/SW-info).

Hardware tests:
From Options -> Selftest, run all tests except battery discharge:
• Codec test
• probe test, using the test cavity
• display test
• keyboard test

Connect the loop back test cable to probe and ABR socket (ABR, only if available).
From the selftest menu, start probe test again. The cable is recognized as a special
probe type and the speaker, microphone and ABR amplifier frequency responses are
tested using voltage dividers contained in the test cable.

If any of the above tests fails, the device is not ready for delivery. It has to be
returned to the manufacturer with a failure description for detailed testing and
repair.

Appendix C – Final Test

Appendix C Final Test

Introduction
This document gives an overview on the final test each AccuScreen must pass.
Note: For the final test, use a calibrated ear probe. If necessary check the calibration according
to the document ‘Test the calibration of PRE probes’.
The final tests go through 3 major steps. These are:
• Ensuring that no false PASS result will be found with the device.
• Ensuring sufficient sensitivity to detect TEOAE, DPOAE and ABR even in noisy
environments and thereby minimizing referral rates with normal hearing children.
• Ensuring long term stability and reliability of instrument function and calibration.

Preparation
• OAE-ABR Simulator
• Sound level meter
• Coupler 711 + probe adapter
• LDA (loopback diagnostic adapter)
• Battery symbol threshold adapter
• “IRDA Test” software and IRDA adapter
• “ES tool” software

Visual inspection
A visual inspection of the device and the supplied accessories should be done to reveal any
damage of the case, the instrument housing and the accessories as well as possible missing
parts.
Check the probe for any damage, especially for any damages of the probe cable.

Filling out the final test protocol

To facilitate filling out of the “final test” protocol, use the “final test step by step” sheet. Use a
fully charged battery.
Test counter
This section must be done after the “final test”. The device saves every
measurement it makes. So before the device leaves the service center, write the
current counter reading in the final test protocol.

1
Appendix C – Final Test

To see the counter reading:

• Select “Main Menu” -> Options -> Self test
• Keep the “arrow down” button pressed and press the right button -> Service
Menu -> ‘Show test counters’.

Settings
Follow the ‘final test step by step’ sheet.
If one test is OK, tick it off with a 9

Current drain
Use the battery symbol threshold adapter at a power supply with current limiter
(300mA).
1. Measure the current drain after booting. The device displays the “Main
Menu” and the backlight is off.
2. Measure the current drain during the self test “Discharge battery” (max.
current drain)
You can find the limits of the current drain in the “Final test” sheet (subtract the
current drain of the adapter).

LED red/green
When you have pushed the OK button to start the device, the LED should briefly
flash red and then green.

Battery symbol threshold

Use the battery symbol threshold adapter to adjust the battery symbol threshold
with R53.
• Put the switch of the adapter to ‘low’. Adjust R53 until the symbol appears.
• Put the switch to ‘high’. The symbol should disappear after pressing a key of
the device.
You may have to repeat this procedure until it works correctly.
Note: You can turn R53 to an invalid position (sweeper has no contact)!

Self-tests
Check if all self-tests are OK.
Loop back test:
• Plug the LDA (loop back diagnostic adapter) to the Ear Probe connector and,
if available, to the ABR electrodes connector.
• Following this, start the “Probe test” in the “Self test” menu again. The
device will identify the adapter and start the loop back test.

Date/time, sound, backlight, patient list…

Use the ES-Tool to configure these settings (time and date will be set
automatically).
Check all settings in the ‘Settings’ menu of the AccuScreen.

IRDA test
Use the ‘IRDA Test’ software tool for IRDA test. The software shows you all
information and limits for the test.

Sound level
• Measure the sound level of the TEOAE stimulus.
• Use the sound level meter with the coupler 711 and the adapter for the PRE
probe.
• Put the probe into the coupler and start the TOAE measurement.
• After calibration, measure the sound level.
You will find the limit of the sound level in the “final test” protocol.

Appendix C – Final Test

LED red/green (polarity test):

After a ‘PASS’ measurement, the LED must light green for about 10 sec. Do this
measurement in your ear or with the OAE-ABR Simulator.
After a ‘REFER’ measurement, the LED must light red for about 10 sec. Do this
measurement in the test cavity.

Test cavities
The device is first tested in the 5 different test cavities of the OAE-ABR Simulator
with the volumes 2, 1, ½, ¼, 1/8 cm³. For testing, use the calibration procedure of
the TEOAE measurement. In the 2 cm³ - coupler, the device should not calibrate,
it should indicate a “Probe Error” message. At all other volumes the device
should calibrate and the TEOAE measurement indicates ‘REFER’. This tests the
maximum sound pressure which the device is able to transmit within its self-
calibration range.

Simulations
For OAE-ABR Simulator handling read the OAE-ABR Simulator Manual.
TEOAE
1. Start TEOAE simulation and set signal and noise level as shown in the final
test protocol.
2. Place the probe in the ear probe coupler.

Appendix D – Testing the Calibration of PRE probes

Appendix D Testing the Calibration of PRE probes

General remarks
The PRE type probe contains up to 2 speakers and 1 microphone. All 3 elements are
tested during probe calibration. The material was defined to standard equipment.
The only special parts needed are adapters for connecting the probe tip to calibrator
and coupler.

Material
• Sound level calibrator with probe adaptor
• Sound level meter with IEC711 coupler and adaptor plate
• AccuScreen device supporting PRE probes or AccuScreen OAE - ABR simulator
• Probe for testing
• Standard test cavity supplied by the manufacturer.

Procedure

Microphone
Connect the probe to the calibrator which should generate 94.0 dB SPL @ 1000 Hz.
From the selftest menu, press and hold the 'arrow down key', then press the right
key. The service menu pops up. From this menu, go to 'Mic cal'. The device should
display a sound level of 94.0 +- 2 dB SPL.

If the calibrator uses levels other than 94 dB SPL, the reading should be this sound
level +- 2 dB. The sound level should not be higher then 100 dB SPL as clipping will
occur then (the red LED will light).

Speakers
From the service menu (see above), go to 'Spk1 1000Hz' and put the probe to the
IEC711-coupler connected to the sound level meter. Set the sound level meter to
linear, fast average SPL measurement. The reading should be 79 +- 3 dB SPL.

Repeat the procedure with 'Spk2 1000 Hz' if the probe is a DPOAE-type.

Finally, when you use the AccuScreen, select 'Spks out of phase' and read the sound
level. The sound level should be lower than 60 dB SPL. This checks the symmetry of
the speakers. When you use the OAE-ABR Simulator, select 'Spk polarity test'. The
calibrator will drive the speakers in phase. The level should be close to 79 dB SPL.

Overall test:
From the selftest menu, execute the probe test while the probe is placed in the
standard test cavity. The test result should be a 'probe OK'.

2
Appendix E – ABR Trunk Cable Test

Appendix E ABR Trunk Cable Test

General remarks
For service tasks such as the annual test, and final test after repair the ABR trunk
cable must be tested.

The wires in the plug could get a high resistance connection. Accordingly, the
impedance between the wires, and especially the GND wire, must be tested.
Furthermore the resistance of the wires should also be checked.

Material
• Ohm meter
• ABR trunk cable test adapter

Test procedure
Plug the ABR trunk cable to the test adapter.
Measure the impedance between the measuring pins according to the following
matrix:

Measuring pins: Limit:

GND(blue) - white >10M Ohm
GND(blue) - black >10M Ohm
GND(blue) - red >10M Ohm
white - red >10M Ohm
white - black >10M Ohm
red - black >10M Ohm

Measure the resistance of the “black, red and white” wire. Connect the Ohm meter,
for example to the red plug socket of the ‘ABR trunk cable adapter’ and to the pin of
the trunk cable distributor which is marked red. Repeat this procedure also for white
and black.

Measuring pins: Limit:

red <5 Ohm
black <5 Ohm
white <5 Ohm

If one of the measurements exceeds the limit, replace the ABR trunk cable.

Appendix G – AccuScreen Configuration Tools

Appendix G AccuScreen Configuration Tools

All configuration tools are based on a communication protocol via the serial port
which can access the flash and EEPROM memory of the device and the real time
clock. Flash memory is used for storing the program code, patient and test data. The
EEPROM is used for storing user selectable options, the examiner list, the comments
list, calibration dates etc.

All tools have been tested with Windows95, 98, ME.

Upload new firmware: up1.exe, ups1.exe

Version: 1.2, 6/2002

This executable uploads a file in FZ1-format to the AccuScreen flash. The FZ1 format
is a binary format, which contains image data of the flash to write along with a build-
number. This number is used to detect the version of software installed on the
AccuScreen.

Upload speed selection

up1.exe and ups1.exe are identical. The difference in the name causes the program to
select different upload speeds: up1.exe uses 115200bps, ups1.exe uses 38400bps.

1
Appendix G – AccuScreen Configuration Tools

Changing the file name to up2.exe or ups2.exe will make the program use COM2
instead of COM1.
Use the “slow” versions if you experience trouble with the high speed. On some
laptops, the cable length is critical due to a limited drive current of the port.

The only argument to the program is the filename to upload, such as

ups1 AS_PRE_P_TDA_E1M.fz1
which will upload the AccuScreen PRO TDA software to the device. Language set is
E1, Distributor is Madsen, probe supported is PRE. See below for the filename
system.

The easiest way to use the tool is to click on the fz1-file to upload and at 'open with'
select up1.exe. Associating the file extension fz1 with up1.exe will then upload fz1
files with just a double-click in Windows.

When the software has been uploaded, up1.exe will read it back and verify. If
anything went wrong during the upload or verify, an error message will be shown.

File name system for firmware

The file name of the firmware contains all information on the variation that is stored.
The filename should never be changed, as it is also written to the AccuScreen for
automatic upgrading. The auto-upgrade reads the filename and build code from the
AccuScreen, compares them with a set of files available on the firmware disc and
uploads a new build, if available.

Filename example:
AS_PRE_P_TDA_E1M.fz1
means

AccuScreen for PRE type probe PRO TDA language set Europe1 distributed
by Madsen.

As the device is available as PRO and Basic, and each of the options T, D, A can be
active or not, a set of firmware contains 14 versions.

Reset calibration date: set_cal1.exe

This program resets the calibration date which is shown in 'HW/SW details' from the
options menu on the AccuScreen. The date is set to the current date of the PC.
Changing the name to set_cal2.exe will let the program use COM2 instead of COM1.

2
Appendix G – AccuScreen Configuration Tools

Upload licence code: set_code1.exe

This program writes the code which is needed to run a firmware to the AccuScreen.
Renaming this file to set_code2.exe will use COM2 instead of COM1.

3
Appendix G – AccuScreen Configuration Tools

Pre-configuration: ES_tool.exe
This tool programs the parameters stored in the EEPROM of the AccuScreen. The
user configurable data can be preset to defaults stored in a file or individually
changed. This includes language setting, clock format, mains frequency, examiner list
etc.

The program provides an easy-to-use user interface. It incorporates the ability for
setting the clock.

The default parameters are stored in the file es_set.txt and can be edited using
notepad.exe or any ASCII editor.

Appendix H – Change Battery

Appendix H - Change battery

General remarks:
The clock battery of the device must be replaced every three years to make sure that
the date and time functions work properly. To change the battery you need a
soldering gun and you must open the device. Accordingly, a ‘final test’ is necessary
when the battery has been replaced.

Procedure:
1. Remove the battery and all cables.
Clock battery
2. Open the device (unscrew the six rounded head
screws). The clock battery is on the processor
board (see figure).

3. Use the soldering gun to remove the battery.

4. Solder the new battery in its position on the board.

5. Close the device.

6. Insert a battery and check if the AccuScreen functions properly.
